This paper investigates the way pragmatics and corpus linguistics can benefit from each other through tackling metaphorical language. The metaphors of COVID-19 and how they can be analyzed, both qualitatively and quantitively in the realm of corpus pragmatics analysis, will be focused on. Significantly, the basic aim of the paper is to shed light on the very nature and use of metaphorical concepts, particularly their pragmatic functions. Moreover, the paper seeks to uncover the fundamental similarities between pragmatics as a linguistic discipline and metaphor as a linguistic tool, since both represent the essence of a hidden or implied meaning. Therefore, this research also attempts to discuss the different types of metaphors used referring to the pandemic from a corpus pragmatics perspective.
A prerequisite for a better understanding of any discourse is performing a correct and accurate analysis of its structure. Also, such an analysis is needed for assembling the meaning of not only the simple straightforward discourse structures but also the ones that are fragmented such as in a story or an elaborate description based on the meanings of the utterances constituting that fragment. Making such analysis a must is also justified by the need for assigning a correct semantic interpretation to clauses constituting a discourse. Therefore, this paper attempts to tackle one of the methods for analyzing a discourse structure. Following Erteschik-shir and Lappin (1979), this work tackles the issue of topic and dominance assignment in complicated discourse structures such as narratives.
This study is intended to analyse newspaper headlines tackling the Israeli attacks on Gaza in Palestine. For this purpose, the study adopts Haliday's transitivity system, introduced within his seminal work Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) in an attempt to investigate the way the under-investigation incidents are portrayed via news headlines. The main question pursued in this work is how newspapers editors and news writers construct an image of a certain event through the various selections from the linguistic repertoire, specifically, the Israili-Palestinian conflict. To find an answer to this question the study adopted the framework of transitivity analysis within a descriptive approach to identify ideational meanings realized by grammatical selections.
