مختصر البحث

The investigation comprised physiological and histological exams of 70 women with Toxoplasmosis and 30 women who were not affected. Samples from 20 placentas were obtained from groups, as well as blood and physiological examinations. The findings of the current investigation displayed a fundamental increase in concentration of IP-10(133.5 ± 120) and MCP (220.9 ± 122) in blood serum of patients suffering from Toxoplasmosis infection and control group IP-10 (94.8 ± 82) and MCP (199.7 ± 76). There were histological changes in the placenta tissue in aborted women due to the rapid reproduction of the parasite, and large spaces in the tissue due to the parasite's formation of tissue bags, which resulted in the death of cells forming the placenta tissue due to the parasite's secretions and toxic substances. Abortion or congenital deformities in the pregnancy, as well as impairments to the newborn neurological system.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Pediculosis is a common health problem. Many studies had implemented to show prevalence of head lice infestation, but assessment of knowledge and awareness level regarding it, had never been studied in Najaf. The present study designed to be the first investigation at this topic. Objectives & Methods: Questionnaires were answered by 300 biology department students their ages (18-24) years during February-May in 2020 in Najaf Province. Multinomial regression models were used to analyze the predictor variables of pediculosis students’ knowledge. Results: Out of 300 participants included, (98%) correctly answered about prevention & eradication, (88.0%) about infectivity aspects which considered a good informative level. Moderate level of information about lice biology (71.3%), transmission and clinical features (64.3%). While infestation likelihood (58.3%), and treatment (52.3%) aspects appeared mild awareness level toward pediculosis, lice survival aspects (40.5%) showed a weak knowledge level. (82.3%) of the participants felt ashamed if their child/ren or family member/s infested with pediculosis. Conclusions: The overall percentage of correct answers was about 67.13%, it is substandard knowledge level regarding pediculosis in the present study. Keywords: Assessment, knowledge, head lice, pediculosis, Najaf.

ABSTRACT : The recent study was carried out during the period from October 2019 to February 2020 in Najaf Province. The study involved (40, 30) serum samples from cutaneous leishmaniasis patients (CL) and healthy control group, respectively; to assess the level of total antioxidants and some basic trace elements (iron and copper). The results showed that there was insignificant decrease in the average antioxidant concentrations (1092 ± 112.5) μmol/ml in CL as compared with controls (1129.8 ± 88.8) μmol/ml, p £ 0.05. Iron concentrations in CL appeared a significant decrease (122.2 ± 24.1) μg/dL as compared to control (144.4 ± 35) μg/dL, whereas a significant increase in the rate of copper concentrations was observed (114.2±24.4) μg/ dL & (89.8 ± 15.3) μg/dL in CL and controls respectively, at p £ 0.05. We conclude that infection with Leishmania parasite has a minor effect on the total antioxidants in the CL patients, also, alteration in concentration of essential trace elements in the serum Fe, Cu may be represented a part of the defense strategies of the organism induced with hormone-like substances. Therefore, more researches are needed to reveal the relationship between total antioxidants and the cutaneous leishmaniasis infection. Key words : Cutaneous leishmaniasis, total antioxidants, essential trace elements, Najaf.

Abstract The present study aimed to highlight and assess the in vitro poultry anti-lice properties of Ziziphus mauritiana alkaloids and Eucalyptus camaldulensis terpenoids leaves extracts. In vitro poultry antilouse effects of the extracts of various concentrations (1 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL, and 10 mg/mL) using filter paper contact bioassay was applied. Results revealed that lice mortality was concentration-dependent for both studied extracts. The median lethal concentration (LC50) values were 3.687 and 1.045 for alkaloids and terpenoids extracts respectively. The results indicate that terpenoids extract has strong lousicidal activity. Further steps should be pursued to make these extracts to be tested in vivo then may be used as a novel treatment for poultry lice in future, allowing lice control in a less aggressive way to the environment .

ABSTRACT Giardia is the most frequently reported intestinal parasite worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the ghrelin, melatonin, glucose and cholesterol concentration in male patients infected with Giardia lamblia. We enrolled 66 patients with Giardiasis and the control groups consisted of healthy subjects (n D 30). The results demonstrated that there was a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in ghrelin levels, while the melatonin, glucose and cholesterol levels were significantly increased (P < 0.05) in giardiasis patients as compared to the healthy group. The obtained results suggest that ghrelin and melatonin could serve as biomarkers in patients infected with G. lamblia.

ABSTRACT Scabies is a common ectoparasitic contagious skin infestation globally, particularly in the developing world. Infestation invariably leads to the development of localized cutaneous inflammation, pruritis and skin lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate immunobiochemical response of the host's inflammatory/immune response to scabies during infestation. The present study was conducted on 60 scabietic patients who visit Dermatology Outpatient Clinic, Al-Sader Medical City in Najaf governorate/ Iraq during February 2012 till November 2012. Blood samples from 60 scabietic patients (30 early and 30 late scabietic patients) and 28 healthy and non-allergic controls were collected for eosinophils (%) count using Cell-Dyn Ruby; serum was obtained to estimate serum cytokines (IL- 1β, TNF-α, IL-4 & IL-5) and IgE using (ELISA) technique, and SOD levels. All the studied parameters were highly significant elevated (p< 0.05) in both early and late scabietic patients in comparison to control group. IgE positively correlated with IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-4 and IL-5 in early scabietic patients, whereas it had negative correlation with IL-1β, TNF-α and positive correlation with IL-4 and IL-5 in late scabietic patients. SOD showed negative correlation with IL-1β and TNF-α, whereas positive correlation appeared with IL-4 and IL-5 in both scabietic patients. In early and late scabietic patients, eosinophils (%) positively correlated with all the studied cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-4 and IL-5. The findings of the current study demonstrated that host immune response in early scabietic patients resembles a TH2 allergic response, whereas in late scabietic patients; It resembles a TH1 cell-mediated protective response.

Abstract Scabies is a common ectoparasitic contagious skin infestation globally, particularly in the developing world. To estimate and document the prevalence of scabies infestation among patients attending the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic in Najaf governorate, Iraq. This study is a hospital-based descriptive study. It was conducted during the period from February 2012 till November 2012 in Dermatology Outpatient Clinic, Al-Sader Medical City. Study patients were physically examined by dermatology specialists (dermatologists) for the presence of scabies as well as microscopic examination of skin scraping was confirmed. The prevalence of scabies was 6.54%. Out of this, 56% were males and 44% were females. Their ages range was 10-65 years. The highest frequency of scabies was among patients aged 10-19 years (41.7%). Majority of scabietic patients had the symptoms of scabies for less than 1 month (72%). Prison was the main source of infestation (49.3%). Scabies infestation was highest in patients belong to urban areas (56.3%), family size more than 5 persons (54%), and who were illiterate (46.3%).Age-specific prevalence of scabies by gender showed statistical significance (p=0.004). Age-specific prevalence of scabies stratified by duration of symptoms showed statistical significance (p=0.013). The topographical distribution of scabies lesions showed that trunk was the most affected sites in both sexes (100%). Axillae and breast had statistical significant difference in females (p=0.001 and p< 0.000) respectively, whereas hands and genitalia were statistically significant in males (p<0.000 and p=0.02) respectively. Scabies was more prevalent in colder months than in summer. The prevalence of scabies was 6.54%. Scabies topped the list of parasitic diseases. Scabies is a common dermatologic problem. The incidence of the infestation can be reduced by social health education and improving socioeconomic and hygienic conditions, as well as by promoting more efficient health services.
