مختصر البحث

The main objective of this study is to compare the structural behavior of composite steel– concrete beams using cellular beams with and without steel ring stiffeners placed around the web openings. An IPE140 hot rolled I-section steel beam was used to create four specimens: one without openings (control beam); one without shear connectors (non-composite); a composite steel–concrete beam using a cellular beam without strengthening (CLB1); and a composite steel–concrete beam using a cellular beam (CLB4-R) with its openings strengthened by steel ring stiffeners with geometrical properties Br = 37mm and Tr = 5mm. CLB1 was fabricated with openings of 100mm diameter and a 1.23 expansion depth ratio, while CLB4-R was fabricated with openings of 130mm diameter, a 1.42 expansion depth ratio. Both beams were 1700mm in length with ten openings. The results of this experiment revealed that the loads applied to CLB1 and CLB4-R at deflection L/360 exceeded the load applied to the control specimen at the same deflection by 149.3% and 177.3%, respectively. The results revealed that the non-composite beam had an ultimate load 29% lower than that of the control beam. The ultimate load on CLB1 was 5.3% greater than that of the control beam, and failure occurred due to web-post buckling. While the ultimate load of the CLB4-R beam was 18.43% greater than that of the control beam, the Vierendeel mechanism was indicated as the failure mode.

مختصر البحث

Abstract: This article discusses the experimental testing of tapered castellated beams (TCBs) under mid-span concentrated load. These beams are created by cutting the webs of standard I-sections in a particular zigzag pattern and rejoining the two parts by placing variable expansion plates between web posts and welding them together. Generally, the depth of the mid-span will be increased. A standard I-section (IPE140) was selected as a parent beam to fabricate three TCB specimens and one prismatic castellated beam. The experimental results showed that the ultimate load capacity of the TCBs could be increased up to 140% of the ultimate load capacity of the parent section. Fabricating a TCB is an effective way of increasing the allowable load of a long-span member while remaining within International Building Code-defined deflection limits. The experimental results showed that the allowable load at deflection (L/360) increased up to 183% of the allowable load for the control specimen at the same deflection. Finally, the experimental results showed that web-post buckling and joint-weld rupture failure modes occurred in TCBs due to the formation of high shear forces that tried to twist the web posts.

مختصر البحث

Castellated beams are made from a hot rolled steel I-section in a few steps. Firstly, the web of the parent I-section is cut in a particular zigzag pattern and the two halves are reconnected by welding to form a castellated beam with hexagonal openings. In other cases, a spacer plate is placed between the two halves to produce octagonal openings, which increase the section depth. Increasing the depth by adding spacer plates leads to web-post buckling. This study focuses on improving the castellated beam to obtain high strength with relatively low cost by placing a steel ring inside the octagonal openings to strengthen the weakest part, which is its web. The results show that the steel ring is effective in strengthening the web-post.

مختصر البحث

Castellated steel beams are section steel members with hexagonal or octagonal web openings which they are made from standard hot rolled steel section I or H. The main advantage of these members is their economic material. An additional important advantage is a possibility to guide service ducts through the openings. The presence of the web openings influences the members’ failure behavior around the openings, new local failure modes will come into existence, such as the buckling of the web post between the openings, or yielding around the openings. Castellated beams with octagonal openings usually fail due to web post-buckling because of the increase in depth. The current study focused on improving the behavior of the castellated beam with octagonal openings using steel ring stiffener and adjusting the best dimension and distribution for the stiffeners. All the models of specimens have been fabricated from a parent I section (IPE 140). The models have been modeled and analyzed using finite element software ANSYS (version 15). The analysis results showed that reinforcing octagonal castellated beams by adding steel ring stiffeners around octagonal web opening was very active way to increase the ultimate load for long span, where the ultimate load of reinforced octagonal castellated beam increased up to (286%) compared with parent I-section beam. Economically, the percentage of additional steel material which used to expansion and reinforce the castellated beams (spacer plate and steel ring stiffeners) was (36%) when compared with the weight of parent I-section beam. While the allowable load at deflection (L/180) was (260 %) compared to the allowable load of parent section at the same deflection. The gained benefit was increasing the ultimate and allowable load of reinforced octagonal castellated beams by (186%) and (160%) respectively by using additional steel material only (36%) from the weight of parent I- section, which the additional steel material consisted from the spacer plates and steel rings. Also, the results indicate that the best dimensions for the ring were when thickness equal to the web thickness of the parent section and the width equal to the half of the parent section flange width.

Abstract: Castellated beams made by cutting web of hot rolled steel I-section in particular zigzag pattern and recollecting the two parts by welding, to form a castellated beam with hexagonal openings, or more increasing of section depth by placing expansion plates between these parts to fabricate castellated beam with octagonal openings. The main advantage of fabrication this type of beam is increasing section depth, which leads to improve its behavior compared with original beam. So as to use the castellated beams with expansion plates into its best advantages, the failure modes due to web opening need to be avoided. This paper aims to provide added strength of castellated beams with expansion plates by using two types of stiffeners (circular and octagonal ring) around octagonal web opening. This strengthening technique was suggested to reinforce web portion and avoid failure due to web-post buckling. Standard (IPE140) were chosen as a parent section for fabricating four specimens as well as original beam. The important observation through this study is that using ring stiffener leads to have significant effect on ultimate strength. In case of using circular ring stiffeners, the ultimate strength was increased up to (188%) compare with original beam. Whereas the increment in ultimate load at using octagonal ring stiffeners was reach to about (77.6%). Consequent, using circular ring stiffeners to reinforced this type of beams was more efficient than using octagonal ring stiffeners. It is worthwhile to mention that it can be used (37%) as additional steel material (Expansion plates and ring stiffeners) for increasing the load capacity of castellated beams up to (288%) relative to original beam

Abstract: the current study included an experimental and numerical study to assign the structural behavior of the cellular steel beams with and without strengthening by placing a steel ring stiffener around web-opening. IPE 140 hot rolled I-section steel beam was used to produce three specimens; the first without opening (control beam), the second was cellular beam without strengthening and the third beams was (LBD-R) with strengthening by steel ring stiffeners around opening with geometrical properties (Br=37mm and Tr=3mm). all cellular beams were fabricated with opening diameter (130mm) that result in expansion depth ratio (1.42), span length (1700mm) and ten openings. the results showed that cellular beam without strengthening was increased the ultimate load up to (31%) than the control beam (without opening) even in case of presenting a large opening and the failure was happened due to the web post-buckling. While the cellular beam with strengthening increased the ultimate load up to (147%) than the control beam and the failure mode that noted was the Vierendeel mechanism. On the other hand, the numerical study by finite element has shown that the increasing the ring thickness can be increased the ultimate load up to (172%) when using steel ring with thickness as the same as the web thickness (0.41 time of flange thickness) and after this value is not feasible economically.

Abstract Castellated steel beams are those members which are made from hot rolled steel I-section firstly by cutting the web in zigzag pattern and rejoining the two halves by welding together to form a hexagonal castellated beam such that the depth of section will be increased. Generally, the openings made in the web are with hexagonal shape; however, octagonal shape of web openings is typically obtained by providing spacer plate which is utilized to increase the depth of beam. Nowadays, using castellated beams in building construction becomes very popular because of their useful functions such as ease of service provision, strength and low cost. This study focuses on improving the behavior of hexagonal and octagonal castellated beam with spacer plate. The ultimate strength of the original (parent) I- section beam increases due to the increasing its depth. The increment of castellated beam depth; however, leads to post buckling in its web and to many other modes of failure when these beams are subjected for loading. Hexagonal and octagonal castellated beams which are fabricated using parent I-section (IPN140) are analyzed using finite element model (FEM).The analysis results revealed that using ring stiffeners around edge of holes contributes effectively in strengthening the web. It was found that using ring steel stiffeners can reduce the stress concentration around the edge of holes and improve the behavior of these beams by increasing the ultimate strength and minimizing the deflection. From the numerical (FEM) results obtained by using ANSYS14, it is concluded that ultimate strength of castellated beam can be improved by providing spacer plate and ring stiffeners around the web hole. Also, the results showed that ultimate strength of octagonal castellated steel beam can be increased up to (53%) more than the parent beam (IPN140) with providing only (13.0%) weight of steel (spacer plate plus ring steel stiffeners).

مختصر البحث

Abstract This study aims to investigate the effect of making circular hole in web of existing steel I-beam on stiffness response and Ultimate Load Capacity (ULC) in addition how to strengthen this hole using steel ring stiffener. The experimental investigation has focused on testing four steel I-beam cases under concentrated point loads. The first one was tested steel I-beam with solid web as a reference (Control) case and the other three specimens were tested by making circular hole in web of steel I-beam without and with steel ring stiffeners. The experimental results demonstrate that the ULC and stiffness of steel I-beams significantly decrease with making a hole in web. Accordant of experimental work, it can be noted that behavior of steel I-beam with stiffening opening web using steel ring is satisfactory agreement with behavior of steel I-beam with solid web ( before cutting hole). To simulate the experimental cases, the nonlinear finite element model (NFEM) using ANSYS ver.11 software was adopted in this study. The numerical resultsof load-deflection response and distribution stress along the examined beams have been compared with experimental tests. In general, good agreement between the (NFEM) and experimental results has been obtained. The purposed of NFEM has been done for implementation a parametric study to investigate the effects of three parameters: size, location of opening web and thickness of stiffener steel ring. It was found that the ULC of steel I-beam with opening web dropped almost linearly with the increase in hole diameter of web at ratio of diameter hole to beam depth (D/H) greater than (0.5). Therefore, it can be recommended to usesteel ring stiffeners to strengthen steel I-beam with opening web which have diameter greater than half depth of this beam (0.5H).

Abstract Nowadays , use of castellated steel beams (CSBs) has become very common result of its advantageous implementations in construction of buildings. Castellated steel beams (CSBs) are those members which are fabricated from standard hot rolled steel (HRS) I- sections by cutting along its web in "zigzag" pattern and thereafter rejoining the two halves on one another by welding together to form a castellated beam so that generally depth of section will be increased. This research analyses the experimental results of six specimens of castellated steel beams and compares with control beam (Parent section). The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of hexagonal hole dimensions on the ultimate strength and stiffens response of castellated steel beam. Also, the effect of number of hole on the behavior of castellated steel beams that have the same span and ratio of expansion was investigated. All specimens of castellated steel beam were fabricated from hot rolled steel section (IPE140) and were expanded to (1.56) times the parent section depth. From the test results, it is observed that best dimension of castellated steel beam was (span length to holes space ratio L/S = 8.0) , (hole depth to Castellated beam depth ratio h/H=0.56) and (hole space to castellated beam depth ratio S/H = 1.03). The ultimate strength of castellated steel beam was increased about (50%) stronger than the original beam.

Abstract-Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRB) has been effectively utilized in structural engineering; particularly in strengthening structural members. The current study addressesthe utilization of CFRP in one way strips concrete slabs subjected to a two line static loading system. Two different CFRP techniqueshave been used: externally strengthening and near surface mounted (NSM) techniques. Four samples of one way reinforced concrete strips slabs strengthened byseveral CFRP systems have been tested. Analysis results indicated that the laminate plate CFRP system is more efficient than other techniques. The maximum load carrying capacity of a 1500mm reinforced concrete slab with 0.314 steel ratio has been increased largely by 671%. This technique of strengthening has resulted in a decrease in the RCS maximum deflection by about 21%. In addition, the stiffness of RCS has increased and failure due to deflection occurred at 1.75% of the span length.
