Cryopreservation of spermatozoa is part of the assisted reproductive biotechnology to enhance
reproductive capacity in livestock. Conventional cryopreservation applies slow-gradual freezing
method permitted ice crystallization and causes cryodamage resulting in poor post-thawed semen
quality. Hence, vitrification is introduced by solidifying the solution into glassy state without causing
any crystallization in fast and inexpensive manner. This ultra-rapid cooling method requires high
concentration of cryoprotectants that potentially toxic the spermatozoa. Therefore, this study was
conducted to determine the effect of vitrification on the quality of bull semen. A total of 24 bull semen
samples were collected using an electro-ejaculation technique. Tris-based extender was compared
with vitrification using solution of different concentration of cryoprotectants at 10% (Vitrification
Solution 1; VS-1) and 20% (VS-2) containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylene glycol
respectively. The result revealed that high mortality and nearly zero motility in all post-warmed vitrified
spermatozoa, but the general and progressive motilities parameters in VS-1 at initial evaluation was
22.45% and 24.87% respectively better than Tris-based extender and was statistically significant. In
conclusion, vitrification has potential as an alternative for cryopreservation. Therefore, further
research on spermatozoa vitrification technique on enhancement in cooling and warming should be
conducted and investigated.

مختصر البحثThis study was to evaluate the influence of Panax ginseng aqueous extract on chilled and frozen
thawed bull
sperm quality. Samples of semen were acquired from four bulls through the use of an electro ejaculator. Extension of the semen was done with tris egg yolk diluent which was augmented with 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg/mL Panax ginseng aqueous extract. Diluted chilled portions of the semen were chilled for 6 days at 5 ̊C whereas the frozen semen was cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Results revealed that in chilled and
frozen thawed semen, the control group, T 1 and T 2 recorded higher percentages in terms of sperm motility and
viability in all three groups evaluated compared to o thers, while the high dose of Panax ginseng aqueous extract
in T 6 and T 5 recorded the lowest percentage. Moreover, the values of sperm morphology for chilled and
frozen thawed semen were not significant among the groups. The results of chromatin stability of the present
study showed that T 2 and control were higher than for other groups. In conclusion, the low dosage groups (T 1 , T2
and T 3 ) which were received (0.25 mg/mL, 0.5 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL, respectively) from Panax ginseng aqueous
extract were not signif icant as compared with the control group while high dosage groups (T 4 , T 5 and T 6 ) which
were received (2.5 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL and 7.5 mg/mL, respectively) from Panax ginseng aqueous extract were
highly decreased spermatozoa characteristics.

مختصر البحثABSTRACT : Rue (Ruta graveolens L.) is a medicinal plant that despite the anti-androgenic effects is currently used for
treatment of various disorders. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of the Rue (R.
graveolens L.) extract (1, 10 and 100 mg/kg in feed) on the courtship behaviors and sexual hormones of adult male guppy
(Poecilia reticulate) for 30 days. Fish were fed 100 mg/kg Rue extract that showed a significant increase in 17 â-estradiol
(E2) level, while the testosterone (T) level and the ratio of T/E2 were significantly decreased compared to the control group.
Furthermore, Rue dietary significantly decreased the courtship behaviors in the male guppy in a dose-depended manner. The
males at the highest dose group (100 mg/kg) showed less copulation attempts, in compare to control males. In addition, times
spent in sigmoid display and with the females were significantly decreased in the males fed diets containing 10 and 100 mg/
kg of Rue extract. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between courtship behaviors and T level, while negatively
correlated with E2 concentrations. In conclusion, these results indicate that R. graveolens acts as anti-androgenic endocrine
disruptor, and adversely affected the courtship behaviors and sex hormones of maleguppy, which can result in impaired
reproduction.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different holding temperature before freezing on the motility,
morphology and viability of chilled and frozen spermatozoa. Semen was performed from four mature bulls
by electro-ejaculator. After initial evaluation and first dilution using Tris-egg yolk semen extender, four
groups of diluted semen samples were kept in four different holding temperatures (4°C, 15°C, 25°C and
37°C) for 10 minutes. All semen samples were subsequently chilled in refrigerator at 4°C for at least 3
hours. Post chilling evaluation was done after second dilution with the same extender added with glycerol.
The semen samples were packed into 0.25 ml straws before freezing into liquid nitrogen. Thawing of frozen
semen samples were done on day 1 post cryopreservation in water maintained at 37°C for 30 seconds. Semen
evaluation was conducted post thawing. The results showed that there were no significant difference among
the four different holding temperatures for the post chilling and frozen-thawed sperm motility, morphology
and viability. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that 10 minutes holding time at different
holding temperatures before freezing did not affect the quality of chilled and frozen bull spermatozoa.

مختصر البحثAim: The present study was designed to demonstrate the autoligation (AL) of vas deferens and the excision-ligation (EL)
technique to generate vasectomized rams to reduce the complications, operative time, and price of the vasectomy techniques.
Materials and Methods: A total of 12 healthy and mature Iraqi Awassi rams were used, which divided into two groups,
six rams for each one. The former group was performed the EL technique while the latter group, the AL of vas deferens
technique was used.
Results: The results of the present study found that both techniques were same with the reproductive efficient examinations
that mean the two techniques had same ability to close the male genital passage for teaser rams preparation. However, the
methods were different with the histopathological changes, operation time, prices, and complications, which were minor in
the AL of vas deferens compared with the EL technique.
Conclusion: The AL technique of vas deferens to prepare teaser animal is recommended over the EL technique due to
different aspects such as cost, fewer complications, and active teaser for a long period are the main aspects of AL technique.

مختصر البحثAim: This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of edible bird’s nest (EBN) supplement on the uteri of rats exposed
to lead acetate (LA) toxicity.
Materials and Methods: Five treatment groups were established as follows: Group 1 (C), which was given distilled water;
Group 2 (T0), which was administered with LA (10 mg/kg body weight [BW]); and Groups 3 (T1), 4 (T2), and 5 (T3), which
were given LA (10 mg/kg BW) plus graded concentrations of 30, 60, and 120 mg/kg BW of EBN, respectively. Rats were
euthanized at week 5 to collect blood for superoxide dismutase (SOD) assay, and uterus for histomorphological study and
expression analyses of epidermal growth factor (EGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and proliferating cell
nuclear antigen (PCNA).
Results: Results revealed that LA causes destruction of uterine lining cells and necrosis of uterine glands of exposed
rats without EBN supplement while the degree of damage decreased among EBN treated groups; T3 showed the highest
ameliorating effect against LA toxicity, as well as an increased number of uterine glands. Increased levels of SOD were also
achieved in EBN supplemented groups than the controls. Results of immunohistochemistry showed significantly higher
expressions of EGF, VEGF, and PCNA levels (p<0.05) in T3 compared to other treatments. EBN maintained upregulation
of antioxidant – reactive oxygen species balance.
Conclusion: The findings showed that EBN could ameliorate the detrimental effects of LA toxicity on the uterus possibly
by enhancing enzymatic antioxidant (SOD) activity as well as expressions of EGF, VEGF, and PCNA with cell proliferation
roles.
