Biochemical changes in patients during hypothyroid phase after thyroidectomy

Hypothyroidism is the most common long-term consequence after total thyroidectomy. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the lipid profile and liver function in patients after hypothyroidism. Sixty patients who underwent a surgical operation to remove thyroid were included in this study, and thirty healthy subjects were used as a control. The study was conducted at Al-Sadr Medical City in Al-Najaf city, in Iraq, from October 2020 to March 2021. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was very high in patients at a hypothyroid stage after hypothyroidism. The results showed a significant increase in total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and the ratio of total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The study also revealed a significant increase in the liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) and a significant decrease in alkaline phosphatase …

Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium, and Blastocystis are some parasites primarily responsible for human infections. Giardia lamblia, also known as Giardia intestinalis or Giardia duodenalis, is a common pathogenic protozoan found in the human duodenum and jejunum that causes giardiasis. This study collected stool and blood samples from patients with diarrhea aged less than 1 month to 15 years, from September 2020 to December 2020, in Thi-Qar province. Our study aimed to reveal the diagnosis of Giardia lamblia using direct microscopy examination and detect some immunological parameters such as IL-17 and IL-35 in patients infected with giardiasis.

Effect of Noise on General Health Status of Electrical Generator Workers in Iraq

Electrical generators in Iraq have been a series problem regarding occupational and environmental pollution. The current study aimed to determine the level of general health status among generator workers in Al Diwaniyah City Iraq, and its correlation with noise and demographic data . A descriptive cross-sectional design was conducted in the current study . It was carried out at the private electrical generators in A-Diwaniyah City from the period between the 15th of October 2020 until the 15th of March 2021 . A purposive study of 150 generator workers has been selected .General health was determined by General Health questionnaire (GHQ-28) which is comprised of 28 items, and include four aspects : somatic, social , depression and anxiety . Noise intensity level was measured by sound level meter (SLM) . The results of the present study revealed that average level of noise intensity inside the workers’ room was (78.12 db) ; while it was (104.14 db) near the generator . The results also showed that the assessment of most domain (social, depression, and anxiety) was moderate, except for somatic domain which it was good . There was a significant negative correlation between noise and depression and anxiety . It has been concluded that : Most of the generator workers showed a moderate level of general health status ; Most of the generators workers had moderate level for anxiety, depression and social aspects ; Noise intensities inside the generator rooms exceeds the upper limits accepted for human health .

The role of FSH, LH, and Prolactin Hormones in Female Infertility

Recently, a great attention has been paid to the role of hormones as a diagnostic too in the evaluation of female infertility . The purpose of this study was to identify the association between female infertility and hormonal imbalance (FSH, LH and Prolactin) and what is the relationship between these hormones and the woman's socio- demographic and clinical characteristics. The study was carried out at the Fertility Center in Al-Sadr Medical City, which is located in Najaf province, Iraq, during the period from Dec, 2014 to Apr, 2015. The study involved (44) infertile women who attended the Fertility Center. In accordance to the socio-demographic data, the majority of the studies women were from urban regions (81.18%), while all them were housewives. The clinical history revealed a relatively high percentage (56.82%) of vaginitis, and UTI (50%) among the studies women, while most of them were either overweight (40.91%) or obese (22.73%). The results showed that the majority of studies women had normal hormonal levels according to the standard reference limits for FSH, LH and Prolactin. The study also showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the level of FSH and the age of the studies infertile women. It was concluded that hormonal imbalance for (LH, FSH and prolactin) is just a minor suspected etiologic factor in causing infertility in the studies women the level of FSH increases with age, while the level of prolactin slightly decreases with age. It was recommended to achieve a comprehensive case-control study for evaluating hormonal imbalance of (FSH, LH, prolactin, estrogens, progesterone, thyroid and inhibit) hormones in the infertile women.

Correlation between oxidative stress and thyroid hormone levels in infertile women

Abstract- Background Female infertility is one of the growing problems in the world and is considered as a multifactorial disease . Objective : The aim of the present study is to investigate the correlation between oxidative stress and thyroid hormones : T3, T4 and thyroid-stimulating hormone TSH in the infertile women . Method : This study was carried out between March 2015 and August 2015 including eighty (80) selected infertile women who attended to Fertility Center in Al-Sadr Medical City in AlNajaf Al-Ashraf Province . The study also included twenty (20) healthy volunteer fertile women as a control . Hormonal measurement was performed by ELISA technique, while oxidative stress was assessed by determining the level of : malondialdehyde MDA , catalase CAT and glutathione GSH in serum . Student's t-test was used to investigate the significance in the difference between groups . Results : the results have shown a high significant decrease in the level of T4 and a high significant increase in the level of TSH in the infertile women group as compared to fertile (control) group . The results of the present study also showed a high significant increase in the level of MDA, a significant decrease in the activity of CAT, and a high significant increase in the level of GSH in the infertile women group as compared to control group . The correlation results revealed a significant negative correlation between MDA and TSH , a significant positive correlation between MDA and T4, a high significant positive correlation between TSH and each of CAT and GSH, and a high significant negative correlation between T4 and each of CAT and GSH . Conclusions : It seems that thyroid hormone disorders and increased oxidative stress act synergistically as causative and predisposing factors for female infertility . Recommendations : It is recommended to take in mind the link between thyroid hormones disorders and oxidative stress in the treatment strategies of female infertility . Abstract Introduction Hospitalization in the COVID-19 intensive care unit (ICU) induces psychological pressures on patients, including anxiety and depression, which disrupt their functioning. Patient education and support can facilitate recov ery and potentially alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a supportive training program on stress, anxiety, and depression among COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Najaf hospitals. Method This randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2021, involving 60 hospitalized COVID-19 patients diagnosed based on clinical symptoms and RT-PCR tests. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to either the control or intervention group using SPSS software-generated random sequence. At the beginning of the study, both groups completed demographic information forms and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The control group received standard care, while the intervention group participated in a supportive educational program in addition to routine care. On the fifth day of hospitalization, both groups completed the DASS-21 again. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, independent t-tests, Mann–Whitney, and Wilcoxon tests. Results The two groups were homogeneous regarding gender, place of residence, marital status, and income (p > 0.05). On the fifth day, a statistically significant reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression levels was observed in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion A supportive educational program in the COVID ward can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression among patients. This program is feasible for implementation by nurses without additional costs. Future research could explore the long-term effects of such interventions and assess patient satisfaction with the edu cational program.
