Point of View in Simon Stephens’ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: A Cognitive Stylistic Study

Abstract

The English playwright, Simon Stephens has written The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2012), a play based on a novel written by Mark Haddon (2003) which is considered as the first adapted play from a novel. The play is about a boy named Christopher who sees the dog of his neighbour dead. So, he makes an investigation to know who the killer is. During the investigation, he discovers that his father is the killer, and his mother is still alive after he has told him that she is dead. Some studies have already been done on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, as novel, by focusing on psychological aspects and relating it to linguistic elements; however, no critic has ever presented a more comprehensive analysis of this work as a play by examining the ASD as a central situation and presenting the worlds that the play consists of, through cognitive stylistic studies. This study clarifies the way that the point of view, DST, and Possible Worlds help in understanding the structure of the play. It shows the way(s) the symptoms of ASD can be related to the way the playwright’s point of view is structured and un-folded. The study depends on certain theories and approaches such as McIntyre’s (1975-) concept of viewpoint, and how it can be applied on a dramatic text. Deictic shift theory is also used, in addition to possible worlds and Ryan’s (1946-) perspective of this theory in order to clarify the structure of the play, and to show the worlds that the play has been structured upon. Furthermore, it analyses the play by drawing on certain linguistic elements like vocabulary, grammar, and deixis. They are applied to the language of the central character, Christopher. Consequently, through the mentioned approaches, the point of view of the playwright will be examined to show how autism is represented in the main character of the play.

A Stylistic Analysis of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice

AuthorsDoaa Taher AL_dihaymawee, Zainab Abdulhasan Al Musawi
JournalThe islamic college university journal
Abstract

This paper selects the great British novelist Jane Austen's work Pride and Prejudice as a text to apply two linguistics theories: Halliday's (1994; 2014) Processes of Transitivity and Fowler-Uspensky Model of Point of View to emphasize more how the linguistics theories open further gates to the reader in understanding the British society at the end of the eighteen century and early nineteen century, as the selected theories reveal many aspects in human nature such as the psychological and ideological aspects. Moreover, because of the lack of space, the researchers analyze only four different sketches from all over the novel to reach a general understanding of the use of these two theories in Austen's work.

Abstract

Abstract Capitalism is a dominant economic system in many parts of the world, shaping societies, industries, and individuals' lives. Not only it has left its mark on the real world, but also on the realm of literature. Numerous novels and screen texts have explored capitalism as a central theme, triggering extensive research and analysis. However, much of this research is guided by viewing capitalism from new perspective, not just as a system that exploits workers by paying them less than the value of their physical labor. One popular series that has attracted considerable attention of the researchers is Squid Game. Yet, none of the studies have discussed the new satirical sense of capitalism as a way of entertainment. In Squid Game capitalists derive pleasure from the characters' display of fear, anxiety, and their willingness to risk their lives, essentially purchasing the opportunity to indulge in Schadenfreude. Remarkably, the characters in the game willingly sell their emotions and experiences rather than their physical labor. This research paper aims to focus on the presentation of capitalism in Squid Game as a form of entertainment while examining the associated capitalist Schadenfreude behavior. To analyze this phenomenon, the researchers will go with the familiar definitions of capitalism, alongside various critical and psychological definitions of Schadenfreude. By exploring this unique portrayal of capitalism in the context of entertainment, this research endeavors to shed light on the complex dynamics between capitalism, pleasure – seeking, and the commodification of human experiences. Key words: Capitalism, Squid game, Schadenfreude.
