Effects of Polymer and Nanoparticles on Asphalt Cement Characteristics
This study, presented the findings of laboratory research on asphalt that has been treated by Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS), as well as asphalt that has been modified by Nanomaterials (Nano Clay (NC)). Several tests were performed to study the different effects that polymer and nanoparticles have on the characteristics of asphalt. The bitumen graded 40/50 penetration is prepared to control the binder samples that are used. Other samples are asphalt binder combined with a concentrated mixture of SBS. Polymer modified binders were prepared with varying percentages of SBS 3%, 4%, and 5%, respectively. Additionally, the binder is combined with varying proportions of NC to produce nano-modified binders with concentrations of 0.25, % 0.5 %, and 1 %, respectively. Several tests including penetration, softening point, ductility, and kinematic viscosity, were carried out. When comparing the values of SBS and NC, it can be observed that the effect of SBS on asphalt continues to increase as the quantity of SBS in the asphalt is raised, and it also makes the asphalt harder as the amount of SBS in the asphalt continues to climb, whereas the effect of NC on asphalt stops working once it reaches its specific limit 0.5%. Asphalt modified by polymers (SBS) grows its resistance to high and low temperatures, while asphalt modified by NC develops its resistance to high temperatures clearly, while the low temperature is slightly less resistant. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
