The purpose of this study is to assess the possible use of Empirical Bayesian Kriging (EBK) combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map and analyze geotechnical index properties in Thi Qar Province in southern Iraq. The aim of this objective is to describe the spatial variability of soil limits of the consistency and define areas with expansive soils, which may influence infrastructure development. Data on 550 boreholes and 862 observations per soil property, including Liquid Limit (LL), Plastic Limit (PL), and Plasticity Index (PI), were analyzed. To test the predictive accuracy of the EBK model and thus assure its statistical validation, RMSE, MSD, RMSSD, and correlation coefficients were used to test the model. The findings show that the LL was between 32% and 69%, the PL between 9% and 36%, and the PI between 1% and 39%, with most of the soils being CL and CH, which signifies moderate-high plasticity. The results indicate that there are good spatial patterns, and plasticity is more dense in the north and central areas. The originality of this work is the use of EBK to create detailed digital soil maps of a semi-arid area, where the available geotechnical data is sparse, which is used to form a dependable base to support engineering design, land-use planning, and regional geotechnical modelling.

The current research examines the spatial distribution of shallow bearing capacity in Al-Najaf City through the use of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) data supplemented with advanced computational tools in MATLAB. A high-quality geotechnical survey of 464 boreholes was carried out, with drilling performed at depths ranging from 18 m to 35 m below the current ground surface. To assess the shallow foundations, the top 12 m of the soil profile was analyzed. To measure in-situ soil resistance, SPT measurements were taken at specified depth intervals in every borehole. The raw SPT N-values were adjusted for overburden pressure, an energy-correction parameter, and groundwater effects; other minor adjustments were considered negligible based on their minimal impact on the final dataset. These corrected N-values formed the basis for calculating both ultimate and allowable bearing capacities using empirically developed correlations. MATLAB surfaceinterpolation procedures were used to generate georeferenced thematic maps that depict the lateral variation of bearing capacity within the 0–12 m depth interval. The resulting spatial analysis shows a significant increase in the bearing capacity of the northern and western regions of Al-Najaf, correlating with increases in urbanization and infrastructure density. The predictive geotechnical maps developed in this study can be considered a highly robust, cost-effective, and timely tool for initial subsurface engineering surveys to guide sustainable city development, infrastructure design, and optimization of foundation engineering.

مختصر البحث

A lot of materials could be used as an admixture or even as an essential part of concrete, the aim of this study is to use the Gabbro rocks as a fine and coarse aggregate in concrete. The used Gabbro in study is obtained from waste black granite (as it's locally named). Results showed a significant increase in compressive, tensile and flexural strength when using Gabbro as fine and coarse aggregates, comparing with normal aggregate concrete; compressive strength started to increase from 35.1 MPa for reference mixes up to 56.8 MPa for Gabbro concrete (GC) while flexural strength increased significantly from 3.2 MPa for reference mix to 10.3 MPa to GC concrete (221% increment).

THE EFFECT OF LIQUID POLYMERS (STYRENE BUTADIENE RUBBER) ON SOME MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE UNDER ENVIRONMENTALLY SEVER CONDITIONS

مختصر البحث

Some of the structural concrete members of buildings (in particular those who interface the soil) are subjected to various environmentally severe conditions like freezing/thawing cycles (FTCSs) and salty groundwater, this exposure will harm the concrete members by reducing the essential mechanical properties and then decreasing its durability. In this study, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) was added to high strength concrete mixes (HSC). Two different percentages by the cement weight (5 and 10%) were targeted in order to investigate its effect on some mechanical properties of the concrete mixes such as compressive strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. The study shows that adding SBR will reduce, significantly, the harmful effects due to the severe conditions. Using (5%) and (10%) of SBR leads to reduce the decreasing in compressive strength from 31.57% down to 5.37 and

Numerous methods have been used in the past and recent time to enhance the bearing capacity of the soils, depending on the type of the structure, available equipments, and the properties of the soil. The use of granular trench (two-dimensional plane strain condition of stone column) is one of these methods. This paper provides a finite element method to model soft cohesive soil, granular trench soil, and the reinforcement material by using a computer program called (SIGMA/W). The behavior of both cohesive and granular soils is simulated by nonlinear-elastic soil model (hyperbolic model), while the linear-elastic model was used to simulate the reinforcement material. The angle of friction of the trench soil, the modulus of elasticity of the reinforcement material, the depth, width and shape of the granular trench, the locations, and number of the reinforcement layers were varied. The sloped granular trench was analyzed in two cases; lined and unlined conditions. The results showed that using of granular trench beneath foundations will increase the bearing capacity and reduce the settlement. Moreover, using of polymers as a reinforcement material has a significant effect on both bearing capacity and settlement. Verification of the program has been made by comparing the program results with the available experimental results in the literature. In general, good agreement was found between the SIGMA/W results and the experimental findings.
