مختصر البحثThis paper presents an experimental work of using crushed glass mixed with the poorly graded sandy
soil to investigate the possibility of shear strength parameters improvement using the direct shear test.
The crushed glass is sieved and prepared for seven sets of percentages, the collected percentages of
crushed glass represented a mix of glass retained on sieves No. 4, No. 8, No. 30, No. 100, and No. 200
and were added as a weight ratio of the sample for many cases. The main results of this work show that
the mixing 10% of crushed glass for sieves No. 8, No. 200, and No. 50 increase the angle of internal
friction of poorly graded sand (ذ) about 15%, 3%, and 29% respectively, and mixing 10% of crushed
glass retained on sieve No. 4 decrease ذ about 40%.

مختصر البحثThe displacement of a loaded pile could be vertical (axial) or horizontal (lateral); these displacements
are sensitive to groundwater presence within the soil mass. This paper presents a theoretical study to
investigate vertical and horizontal displacement of piles embedded in a clayey soil for different levels
of groundwater under the ground surface. The study was performed using the commercial finite
element package PLAXIS-3D. Three diameters of the concrete piles were considered: 0.5, 0.75 and
1m, and were subjected to 1,000 kN axial load. The effect of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20m groundwater along
the 20m pile in length from the ground surface on the vertical and horizontal displacements was
investigated. The results indicated that the vertical and horizontal displacements increase when the
ground water level increases towards the base of pile. Also, there is a significant increase in the
horizontal displacement up to 15m of groundwater level from ground surface and decreased at levels
from 15 to 20 m.

مختصر البحثIgnition of waste paper sludge at elevated temperatures to produce electricity in power generation plants utilizing fluidized bed combustion generates paper sludge ash. Due to the high concentration of lime and gelignite in paper sludge ash, it is expected that it will play a vital role as a cementitious material. This paper investigates the use of paper sludge ash to improve the mechanical properties of the granular materials, which are suitable to subbase course for road and building constructions. Also, a comparison study with the use of Portland cement as an additive to granular materials has been covered. The mechanical properties were evaluated by conducting the California bearing ratio test for the two adopted methods. Moreover, the compressive strength of the samples using paper sludge ash and cement are investigated. In accordance to the California bearing ratio test, 4% paper sludge ash was indicated as the optimum ash content at which the California bearing ratio value increased by 173% and 111% in comparison with untreated material and 6% cement, respectively. On the other hand, and by means of the compressive strength, the granular materials with 4% paper sludge ash has compressive strength higher than those with 6% cement.

مختصر البحثThis study presented an experimental work to examine the behavior of a single pile installed in three different types of soil when it is subjected to lateral load. The experimental work was divided into six tests to study the effect of soil layer location on the lateral displacement of the pile by changing soil layer placement surrounding the pile, each layer was taken of a thickness equals to 60 mm and the length of pile is 150 mm. A steel box with dimensions of width (w = 300 mm), length (L = 600 mm and height (H = 1000 mm) was used to perform a laboratory tests. The main conclusions were that the largest lateral displacement corresponding to minimum lateral load was when the sand soil is placed near the surface followed by loam and clay, also, the lateral displacement decreases and the lateral load which can be resisted by the pile increases when the fine soil enclosed the upper first third of the pile. The ideal placement of soil layers was for loam, sand and clay is placed subsequently (Model 6) which has the lateral displacement as a minimum value corresponding to maximum applied lateral load. The results of ideal model (Model 6) were verified with the results obtained by PLAXIS software, the percentages of lateral displacement obtained from PLAXIS 3D software to the experimental work was 88.8% (ultimate displacement from experimental work is 8 mm and from PLAXIS is 9 mm).

مختصر البحثAbstract: Cotton fibers are founded in many countries of the world in different sizes and colors. The presence of PP cotton fibers in soils gives an important change in the behavior and convert the properties of these types of soils. This research introduces a method to upgrade the performance of the granular materials which are normally used in subbase courses. The research program aims to investigate the benefit of using PP cotton fiber as reinforcing material on CBR (California Bearing Ratio) for subbase which is adopted as an indication for treatment. A laboratory tests were made on a granular soil (named commonly as subbase) samples to study the difference between cotton fiber and cement use. CBR value of 34.9 affirmed as a guide value to make the comparisons. In addition, five percentages, i.e., 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6% are used for each material to study their effect on CBR values. With cement, the CBR increases with all percentages used. The study show that the use of cement reinforcement increase the CBR value more than the use of cotton fiber. While for cotton fiber the maximum percentage is 1% by total mass of soil with more than 45% increase in comparison with the virgin subbase material which corresponding to almost 1.5% of OPC addition.

مختصر البحثWater absorption of concrete is an important property of concrete which give an idea of its permeability porosity and durability as well as compressive and flexural strengths, it is very important to modify these properties to resist a salty water attack especially for a concrete foundation and rigid road pavements. This paper presents an experimental study to investigate the effect of replacement Non-Shrinkage Fiber Cement (NSFC) instead of cement as a percentage by the total cement weight of mix without and with Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) latex on the absorption, compressive strength and flexural strength of the concrete mix. The tests performed for the percentages (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) % of (NSFC) by the total weight of cement without and with (10%) SBR. The results show that the use of 40 % (NSFC) can be considered as an ideal percentage if (SBR) used or not. From the results it can be seen also that the absorption decreases when (NSFC) increase and the compressive strength increase when (NSFC) increase significantly up to 40 % and the same behavior for flexural strength. Keywords - Absorption of concrete, Non-Shrinkage Fiber Cement, SBR.
