JournalJournal of Pioneering Medical Sciences
Date2026-04-05
Abstract

Background: Appendicitis is a public and crucial surgical condition that necessitates prompt intervention to avert severe difficulties. Objectives: This scholarship aims to evaluate the efficacy of surgical treatment as the gold standard for dealing with appendicitis. Methods: A total of 66 patients with appendicitis in many hospitals in Baghdad were involved in the study. The patients endured appendectomy, either through open surgery or laparoscopic practices. Data were gathered on patient demographics, symptoms, analysis, surgical consequences, and postoperative recovery. Results: The results confirmed a high achievement rate of appendectomy in handling appendicitis, with minimal problems and favourable outcomes. The complications particularly wound infections was documented, where in current study also reported a wound infection of 20% among the patients who underwent surgical therapy, 75% among those that had late surgery, and 17.5% among early surgical intervention. Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery was linked with shorter hospital delays, reduced postoperative pain, and quicker homecoming to normal activities associated with open surgery. This study highlights the importance of prompt diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention in achieving optimal results for patients with appendicitis in Baghdad. The results support the constant use of surgical treatment as the gold standard for appendicitis management.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Breast cancer is the primary type of cancer affecting women. Patients with hormone receptor-positive cells have lower mortality rates. Both chemotherapy and hormone therapy can improve the survival rate. This study aimed to evaluate the hormonal receptor status in female breast cancer and assess the relationship with the patient's age and family history in Najaf, Iraq. A prospective study of two-hundred and fifty-one women with mastectomies (for cancers) was performed at AL Sader Medical City from January 2019 to January 2021. We collected and analyzed data regarding the age of patients, site and size of the tumor, number of pregnancies, family history, weight, smoking, and hormone receptor status. The average age of patients was 48 years, and the peak incidence was in the 40–49 age group (30.27% of patients). Of all age groups, 48.6% (122 patients) were negative for all hormone receptors (triple negative), and only 22.70% had a positive family history. The peak incidence of cancer in our study was in the 40–49 years group. A high proportion of the hormone receptors for patients were negative (triple-negative), and most patients had a negative family history. KEYWORDS: breast cancer, family history, hormone receptor status.

Abstract

There is an unresolved question about whether realigned visual feedback is beneficial or costly to laparoscopic task performance. We provide evidence that camera realignment imposes a reliable cost on performance across both naive controls and experienced surgeons. This finding clarifies an important ongoing discussion in the literature about the effects of camera realignment, which could inform the strategies that laparoscopic surgeons use in the operating room. A fundamental challenge routinely faced by laparoscopic surgeons is that, since an assistant can only direct the camera through a non-aligned port, the viewpoints of the surgeon and the laparoscopic camera are often considerably misaligned. This causes instrument movements in the workspace to produce counter-intuitive movements on the video display. One obvious coping strategy in such scenarios is to reposition the camera to precisely counteract the misalignment (henceforth called realignment). However, while this successfully realigns camera and surgeon viewpoints, it also introduces discrepancies between how instrument movements are visually depicted on the screen and the surgeon’s actual movements in the workspace. There is a tension in the literature with respect to the impact of camera realignment, with some research reporting that it is helpful1– 5, and other research indicating that it is harmful6– 10. A similar tension exists when viewing this issue from the perspective of motor learning neuroscience. Here, the dominant empirical observation is that visuomotor misalignments (or perturbations) are generally harmful to performance11– 14. Yet it is currently unclear to what extent these findings— which relate to simple unimanual reaching and pointing—should be expected to apply to a laparoscopic context. In the current study, we investigated the effects of realigned visual feedback on motor performance in a laparoscopic task for both naive controls and experienced surgeons. We observed that realignment imposed a reliable cost on task performance across both groups.

An Energy Efficient Long Hop (LH) First Scheduling Algorithm for Scalable Internet of Things (IoT) Networks

Abstract

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming more and more pervasive in everyday life and connecting an array of diverse physical objects. It is fast growing and receiving a tremendous amount of research focus. Billions of objects communicate each other with or without human intervention to achieve smart applications. Most of the connected devices are constrained nodes to its ecosystem which have limited memories, CPU capabilities and power sources. Therefore, for implementing autonomous smart systems, efficient energy consumption is imperative. This paper introduces a novel scheduling algorithm called Long Hop (LH) first to optimize energy usage on a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) that enables IoT system. LH algorithm schedules high priority for packets coming with more hops and longer distances to be served first at the cluster head (CH) nodes of the WSN. Since these packets require more links and nodes (thus increased energy and bandwidth usage) to reach the ultimate destination if not prioritized, the proposed algorithm reduces the overall energy usage and minimizes the total number of packets re-transmission and the effective data transmission distances. This improves the overall system performance and elongates the network lifetime.

Abstract

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing technology with a wide range of applications in various fields. It has unified a plethora of devices and infrastructure under the same umbrella and is considered by many technologies leaders as the network of the future (NoF). IoT connects heterogeneous devices that provide sensing, control, actuation, and monitoring activities for smarter environments. Smart IoT devices or objects are characterized with a unique identifier to transfer data over the network without human intervention. IoT is expected to further extend the boundaries of the autonomous world with advanced connectivity of physical entities, systems, services. However, there are some serious obstacles and challenges, which must be resolved before the full potential of IoT is realized. The focus of this study is to discuss the key drivers of change, challenges that may slow the adoption of IoT and the potential of the internet of things technology.
