Puerperal infection is a danger that can happen after childbirth, it may receive less attention than
during pregnancy and childbirth. Primigravida women become unaware of their health at delivery
time, this leads to a large number of negative consequences due to a lack of knowledge of
preventive measures. The study aimed to assess the knowledge of primigravida women about
puerperal infections. A descriptive cross-sectional study is carried out in six Primary Health Centers
in Al Najaf city during the period from (24th October 2021 to May 22nd, 2022), non-probability (A
purposive sample) of 50 primigravida women participants in this study. The data are collected
through the use of questionnaire format through a face-to-face interview. The study result includes
(46%) of the study participants were within the age group (20-24) years, and (34%) of them had an
institute or above certificate. The majority of them, (84%) live in urban; and more than half they’re
a monthly income that is sufficient to some extent (68%). The majority of them (88%) were
housewives; Most of the study participants (76%) lived with extended families and the majority of
them (88%) with normal BMI levels, and there is a significant association between women’s
knowledge and age, educational status, residence, and occupational status. The study concluded that
most of the study participants had a moderate level of knowledge regarding puerperal infections. It
also reveals that the age, educational status, residence, and occupational status of the study
participants were found statistically significant with knowledge about puerperal infections. The
study recommended applying an instructional program to raise awareness of the postpartum period
and promote healthy practices for women.

Najaf city during the period from (24th October 2021 to May 22nd, 2022). Non-probability (A
purposive sample) including fifty primigravida women participants in this study. All the (50)
pregnant women who visit health centers for checkups are included in the study sample. The study
includes one study group using pre-test and post-test design. A designed questionnaire and women's
interview consists of pretest and posttest questions of primigravida women including (30) items
related to knowledge about puerperal infections. An instructional program was developed after
reviewing literatures. The validity was determined through a panel of experts, and the reliability of
the questionnaire is determined through the use Cronbach Alpha coefficient (0.83). Data analysis is
performed through the application of the descriptive and inferential statistical data analysis
approaches. The findings of the present study indicate knowledge about puerperal infections in
pretest before the implementation of the instructional program was moderate for majority of
women. All sample of primigravida women had great improvement of their knowledge in posttest
after implementation of instructional program. The study conclusion reveals the effectiveness of
instructional program about the prevention of puerperal infection on improving primigravida
women knowledge.
