Abstract In spite of all attempts to refine the real image of colonialism as the angel of mercy which has staff of Moses to flip up the scales, yet such attempts are doomed to fail. Hence, this article shows the impact of cultural imposition on identity formation by applying Frantz Fanon's concept of "cultural imposition" to Inaam Kachichi's The American Grand-Daughter within the context of postcolonial theory. A question has been raised about the nature and the role of cultural blending. The article argues that imposition as a process has a negative impact when applied to culture since it generates a feeling of double consciousness. This article also extends our knowledge of the effect of living within two cultures which generates characters with duality of thinking but not hybrid characters and also to make scholars aware of the impact of such a blending. The most striking result to emerge from this study is that Kachachi's characters undergo a mental conflict since another culture is imposed alongside with their own culture, leading to double consciousness that dominates their thinking.

Abstract This study concentrates on two narratives, Jeans Rhys’s modern fiction “Wide Sargasso Sea” and the Victorian Bronte’s “Jane. Eyre”. This comprehensive analysis aims to recognize the overcritical fact of colonial history that gives touchy emotions about the colonial master’s sarcastic kindheartedness. Rhys’s postcolonial novel was written in the Twenties Century, as a reaction to Bronte's narrative during the Victorian British colonial expansion when the nation's attention was diverted from the West to the East Indies region. This novel donated to the colonial discourse for extensive reading and the unfavorable portrayal of the colonized other. This work investigates the colonial subjects in both novels. The analysis highlights the stereotypes of The Others that were developed by colonizers' agendas to support the notion of their inferiority. Gender prejudice of settlers’ rhetoric behaviors is discussed also, the colonial norms assets and invaders’ legacy agendas discussed. This study states the need for conducting a historical and cultural analysis of the literary texts of the colonizers. Many readers are incapable to hold yet the extensive reading of the post-colonial norms in literary texts.

Abstract Abstract In Gothic fiction, monsters/ otherness are always taken as metaphors of something alienated, abject, uncanny - something to be avoided so that the system is restored. They are excluded from any social belongingness, and hence a distance is created between “self” and “other”. However, the present paper discusses the collapse of the notion of the uncanny monster in contemporary Gothic fiction. It focuses on Isaac Marion’s, as a contemporary writer, a new representation of the monster in which more human characteristics are given. In Marion’s novel Warm Bodies(2010), the monster is not completely alienated in the sense that it appears to be normal and longs to be a human. The curiosity of wanting to find out what has changed with the zombie myth led to the topic of this essay. The challenge that Marion puts forward is to make literature relevant to overarching contemporary issues, particularly the widespread destruction of the huge gap between “self” and “other”. The paper concludes that zombification is culturally oriented and that the Otherness/zombie in contemporary fiction is not something bad to be avoided. Instead, the zombie appears romantic and sexy with emotions and selfhood.

Abstract The French Lieutenant’s Woman continues to be one of the "Notable Books of 1969” and the most popular novel written by the British novelist John Fowles. It signifies one of the best metafictioal examples that embracesmultiple voices of narrators, metafictional paratextuality, irony through juxtaposition, use of anachronism and critical parody.Since its publication itbrought to public attention of a differentinterpretations of Victorian, sexual and literary conventions. The novel discusses the troubled relationship of gentleman, Charles Smithson, and the mysterious independent woman, Sarah Woodruff, with whom he falls in love. The novel parodies the Victorian social, cultural and literary work of art.The novel also receives much attention as an important feministdocumentbecause of the contrast between the independent Sarah Woodruff and the more stereotypical male characters, Charles Smithson. I would argue in this paper that The French Lieutenant’s Woman is a juxtaposition of the convintions of two eras, Victorian and modern novel to become a double-voiced discourse, in which postmodern parody plays its significant role.I would also discuss Hutcheon’s meaning of postmodern parody that differs from the old meaning of parody as the former marks with productivity rather than ridiculing and opens the text up to different interpretations. Moreover, the paper will shed light on Victorian hypocritical treatment of woman character by comparing the double-image of the heroin Sarah Woodruff.

Abstract Antonia Susan Byatt’s Booker Prize-winning novel Possession is one of the best Metafictional examples, which incorporates multiple voices and narrators ,intertextuality, irony through juxtaposition, use of anachronism and critical parody, refusal chronology and dialogic polyphony of various voices that focus on the plurality of truth. Moreover, the plethora use of epigraphs and episodesare magnificently employed in the novel. In fact, all of these aspects shape the novels that are entitled to be postmodernist. It is intended in this paper to examine the structure of the novel; i.e., illustrating the postmodern aspects such as the use of intertextulaity, epigraphs, past and present, and the unattainablity of truth. Besides, Byattcriticizes the role of women in the Victorian era, and elaborates the passive roles that women had in their societies. Such a criticism, as the paper sheds some light on,is considered a dominant theme in the postmodernist novels. Accordingly, Possession is one of the richest texts that providean ample material covertly and overtly ready to examine against the postmodernist aspects
