Abstract

Dopamine, a canonical neurotransmitter, is essential for regulating motor, cognitive, and emotional functions, and its dysregulation leads to an array of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, depression, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Given growing concerns about the possible influence of environmental pollutants on dopaminergic signaling, this study aimed to investigate whether bisphenol compounds and pyrethroid-derived metabolites, such as 3-phenoxybenzoic acid, could interact with dopamine receptors. To address this, molecular docking simulations were conducted for above-mentioned ligands while considering dopamine as a reference ligand. Structural models of dopamine receptors were prepared and subjected to molecular docking with PyRx software. The selected pollutants exhibited binding affinities ranging from − 7.6 to − 7.0 kcal/mol, compared with – 6.2 kcal/mol for dopamine. These computational findings suggest that the pollutants may show stronger binding affinities to dopamine receptors than dopamine itself, raising the possibility of competitive interactions at receptor binding sites. While these results provide preliminary in silico evidence, they remain predictive and require additional validation through experimental and in vivo studies to better clarify the potential neurotoxic implications of these pollutants.

Abstract

Background & objective: Hypothyroidism is a common disorder that affects metabolism and growth. Vitamin deficiencies, such as D3 and B12, are believed to exacerbate the symptoms of this condition. The mechanism explaining this effect is not precise, but it may be due to thyroid hormone receptors. This study used molecular docking techniques to analyze the relationship between vitamin D3 and B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism. Methodology: The study included 90 women aged 35 and 55, divided into 45 hypothyroid patients and 45 control patients. Levels of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), calcium, vitamins D3 and B12 were determined. Molecular docking techniques study the interaction of thyroid hormone receptors (TRα and TRβ) with vitamins. Results: The results showed a significant decrease in thyroid hormones, calcium, vitamin D3, and B12 levels, with increased TSH (p<0.01). The molecular docking results also showed a strong interaction between vitamin D3 and B12 with thyroid hormone receptors, indicating a possible regulatory role for gene expression, leading to an increase in the binding of thyroid hormone and its receptors. Additionally, the results of the ROC curve revealed 100% specificity and sensitivity for vitamin D3, vitamin B12, and calcium, and the cutoff points were (24.99, 214.5, and 8.26), respectively; these results indicate that these vitamins and calcium are ideal indicators for diagnosing the disease. Conclusions: This study supports the hypothesis that vitamin D3 and vitamin B12 deficiency contribute to the worsening of hypothyroidism through their relationship with thyroid hormone receptors. Further studies are needed to understand the precise mechanisms of this relationship and the potential use of vitamin supplements as part of treatment strategies.

Abstract

Background & objective: Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Among the regulatory peptides involved in vascular homeostasis, apelin and calcitonin gene–related peptide (CGRP) play critical roles in vasodilation, endothelial protection, and cardiac function, highlighting their potential value as diagnostic biomarkers. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of serum apelin and CGRP levels in patients with CAD. Methods: A total of 90 male participants were enrolled in this case–control study, including 45 CAD patients and 45 age-matched healthy controls. Routine biochemical parameters were assessed using standard colorimetric assays, while serum apelin and CGRP levels were measured using ELISA. Anthropometric indices and atherogenic ratios were calculated using standard formulas. Results: CAD patients demonstrated significantly higher levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, atherogenic indices (AIP, AC, CRI-I, CRI-II), troponin, CRP, calcium, and body fat percentage, while HDL, magnesium, apelin, and CGRP levels were markedly reduced (P < 0.001). ROC analysis showed that apelin exhibited excellent diagnostic accuracy with an AUC of 0.894 and an optimal cutoff of 2.98 ng/mL (sensitivity: 88.9%; specificity: 82.2%). CGRP showed moderate diagnostic performance, with an AUC of 0.691 and a cutoff of 30.5 pg/mL. Conclusion: Reduced serum apelin and CGRP levels are strongly associated with CAD, with apelin demonstrating superior diagnostic value compared to CGRP. Apelin may serve as a promising independent biomarker for early CAD detection. Further large-scale studies are recommended to validate its clinical applicability. Abstract

Abstract Endometriosis is a condition characterized by the growth of tissue similar to the uterine lining outside the uterus. This study aimed to evaluate certain sex hormones and determine the levels of activin A and follistatin in women with endometriosis. The study included 45 women with ovarian endometriosis and 45 healthy women as a control group. Hormone levels were measured using a VIDAS analyzer (bioMérieux, France), while activin A and follistatin levels were estimated using ELISA (BT LAB). The baseline characteristics (age, weight, BMI, WHR, WHtR, education, and residency) of the patients were comparable to those in controls (P > 0.05). Similarly, there was no difference in LH and prolactin levels (P > 0.05). Patients with endometriosis had significantly higher FSH (7.17 ± 1.76 vs. 5.99 ± 2.22, P = 0.010) and estradiol levels (136.67 ± 27.27 vs. 57.84 ± 15.16, P < 0.001), while progesterone (0.35 ± 0.11 vs. 0.44 ± 0.16, P = 0.045), testosterone [0.69 (0.45–0.82) vs. 0.81 (0.73–0.88), P = 0.001], and AMH [0.24 (0.15–0.36) vs. 4.08 (2.42–7.34), P = 0.001] were significantly lower. Activin A [11.24 (11.02–11.81) vs. 1.26 (1.02–2.11), P < 0.001] and follistatin [23.36 (19.53–46.86) vs. 12.40 (8.81–18.93), P < 0.001] were markedly elevated in patients compared to controls. The results for Activin A and Follistatin also showed a significant increase, indicating their potential use as promising biomarkers in the diagnosis of endometriosis.

Abstract

Aim: Introduction and objectives: Hypertension (HTN) is a chronic condition linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Early biomarkers are essential for risk assessment. The current study aimed to predict CVD as a complication in HTN by identifying the CGRP, lipid profile, and atherogenic indices. Methods: Fifty-four male HTN patients and 45 healthy controls (ages 51–69) were Material and methods: enrolled. The subjects were divided into two subgroups according to LAP: Group 1 was HTN patients with LAP (≤50), and Group 2 was HTN patients with LAP >50. Serum CGRP (pg/mL) was measured via ELISA; lipid profiles and atherogenic indices were assessed spectrophotometrically. Results:There was a significant increase in the mean of WHR, VAI, LAP, Results: SBP, DBP, atherogenic indices, and lipid profile in the HTN groups compared to the control group, except CGRP and HDL-C showed a significant decrease (P< 0.001). The G2 group showed a significant decrease in CGRP levels compared to the G1 group. The relation between CGRP and CVD remained significant after adjusting for major risk factors in a multivariate analysis. ROC Conclusions: curve based on CGRP levels to indicate the existence of CVD in HTN patients was 0.80. Reduced CGRP levels are associated with increased cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients and may serve as a promising early biomarker. In addition, the AUC of CGRP was 0.82 in patients with a LAP greater than 50 compared to those with a LAP less than 50. Conclusion:These findings support CGRP’s potential role in CVD risk stratification and targeted management.

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system characterized by leukocyte infiltration, immune activation, demyelination, and axonal injury. This case-control observational study aimed to investigate whether serum indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-1 (IDO1) and β-catenin levels are associated with atherosclerotic involvement in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients. Seventy-five RRMS patients were enrolled and divided into two groups: forty RRMS patients with atherosclerosis (MS + AT) and thirty-five RRMS patients without atherosclerosis (MS-AT), in addition to thirty healthy controls. Serum IDO1 and β-catenin levels were measured using ELISA, while additional biochemical parameters were assessed spectrophotometrically. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that IDO1 was significantly associated with RRMS diagnosis (OR = 1.974, 95% CI: 1.371–2.842, p < 0.001), while β-catenin was also significantly associated with RRMS status (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.002–1.008, p = 0.001). The model correctly classified 87.6% of cases. However, when comparing RRMS patients with and without atherosclerosis, neither IDO1 nor β-catenin remained independently associated with atherosclerosis after adjustment for potential confounders. Disease duration was the only significant predictor of atherosclerosis among RRMS patients (OR = 1.202, p = 0.046). These findings suggest that serum IDO1 and β-catenin levels may reflect underlying neuroinflammatory activity associated with RRMS but may not serve as independent biomarkers for predicting atherosclerotic involvement in this population. Disease duration appears to be more strongly associated with vascular involvement in RRMS patients.

Abstract

Biodiesel is biodegradable , clean-burning, non-toxic, renewable, high-quality, and cheap diesel fuel made primarily from waste vegetable oil which can be used without any alterations in engine design. The paper is concerned with the production and testing of the one biodiesel fuels synthesized from used sunflower oil. Transesterification technique is used to convert surplus raw cooking oil and used cooking oil that are considered as pollutants to produce biodiesel. Process involves mixing of 87% heated wasted sunflower oil 12% with methanol and 1% catalyst to produce 87.5% methyl ester (biodiesel) and 12.5% glycerine. The test results show that it is possible to convert 100 % waste matter to 100% useful matter consisting of biodiesel and glycerin. The yield of biodiesel thus synthesizet is found to be sensitive to temperature. Further, it is also seen that the properties of the biodiesel are close to the properties of B100 fuel given in ASTM standards.

Date palms are very famous trees in Iraq and some other countries. The date’s oil might use as a fuel in a compression ignition engines. Also, this oil can be used as a raw material to produce a date-biodiesel. I n this paper, a new method to extract oil from dates is showed and synthesized biodiesel from this oil. Full description to extraction as well as to Transesterification methods is achieved. The main fuel properties tests are done on the oil and the date- biodiesel. The caloric value, viscosity, density, pour point, cloud point and diesel index are tested for date’s oil and for its biodiesel. A comparison with diesel oil is hold to show the utility of this oil and its biodiesel for using in compression ignition engines.

Abstract

Abstract. Plants are one of the main sources of effective compounds used in medicinal treatments against fungi; among these plants are henna, thyme, and garlic. The main purpose of the present study was to extract and isolate active substances from these plants and study their pharmacological efficacy against fungi that cause some skin infections in children, such as Microsporum Canis, Microsporum Gypseum, and Trichophyton Verrucosum. 40 samples were included in this study from children with severe tinea capitis, which physicians diagnosed. The effective compounds were extracted from these plants in many ways, and their effect on the special fungi was studied. Biochemical and physiological tests indicated the types and proportions of fungi isolated from the scalp. This study also showed that the best concentration of the effective compounds extracted from the plants under study in reducing infection rates by 7.58% was 10%. The results also indicated that the type of extract had an effective role in reducing the infection rate, as the mixture of extracts was the most effective in reducing the infection rate to 24.67% at a concentration of 10% compared to each extract separately. It was found that the active substances in the three plants under study positively affect the treatment of diseases resulting from various types of fungi.
