Abstract

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as depression, anxiety, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases are becoming increasingly prevalent in urban areas in general, and specifically within university campuses. Consequently, the regular incorporation of nature exposure—which is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle—has become necessary. The growing research interest in linking campus green spaces with health, and the engagement with the natural world with the physical and mental well-being of site occupants (students, faculty, staff, workers, etc.), has led to a focus on advanced world concerns regarding these NCDs. This, in turn, has increased attention towards campus green spaces, which can encourage heightened daily activities and physical engagement, and promote site stewardship for their significant role in mitigating depression and stress. Given that the relationship between physical and mental health is complex and interconnected, focusing on the site extends to encouraging healthy physical behavior and alleviating or preventing poor mental health. The results of this study substantiated these expectations. It demonstrated that the afforestation of campus green spaces contributes to the reduction of air pollutants. Readings at the optimal location (L2) were at their lowest levels in the morning: (HCHO=0.003, TVOC=0.005, PM2.5=15, PM10=20, CO2=407, CO=1.2). Midday readings at L2 were: (HCHO=0.003, TVOC=0.012, PM2.5=16, PM10=20, CO2=354, CO=1.1). Conversely, readings at location L7 varied significantly, recording in the morning: (HCHO=0.015, TVOC=0.020, PM2.5=20, PM10=26, CO2=618, CO=1.9). Midday readings at L7 were: (HCHO=0.020, TVOC=0.020, PM2.5=22, PM10=28, CO2=657, CO=2.9). The Air Quality Index (AQI) was best at L2, registering 40 in the morning and 46 at noon, while L7 showed the poorest air quality, reaching 104 in the morning and 120 at noon

Abstract

With an emphasis on the thermal performance (TP) and energy efficiency (EE) of green roof (GR) systems, this study explores these systems' ecological and economic sustainability in urban settings. A simplified methodology was created to assess the TP of both extensive and intensive green roof variations. The findings underscore the critical function of GRs in reducing heat flux in buildings with insufficient insulation, stressing that larger roof substrates result in more significant heat reduction. Drier soil conditions provide better thermal insulation. Other important elements included soil moisture content and its effect on evapotranspiration. Specifically, the broad and intense green roof systems improved energy and environmental performance and dramatically lowered temperatures by roughly 3.3 and 3.5 degrees Celsius, respectively. The temperature drops affect roofs' outside surface temperature and contribute to alleviating the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Intensive green roofs IGRs, in particular, showed better thermal performance because of their higher Leaf Area Index (LAI) and thicker substrate. A multi-criteria analysis comparison was carried out to evaluate different GR systems' energy and environmental performance. The findings ascertain that the technique of IGR is a feasible option for lowering the building cooling energy requirements and lessening the effects of UHI, especially in semi-arid climates. This study offers helpful information for architects, legislators, and urban planners on how to use GR systems to improve ecological sustainability and economic benefits in urban settings.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at the research station of the College of Agriculture, University of Kufa, during the 2024-2025 growing season, to evaluate the effect of using soil amendment with date palm remains compost and foliar Brassinolides on Tecoma growth and flowering. Tecoma seedlings were 6-month-old yellow Stans propagated by cuttings and planted in plastic bags. The treatments were: soil incorporations with date palm remain compost at 0, 100, 200 and 300 g. pot-1 and foliar treatment with Brassinolide at 0, 5, 10 and 15 mg L-1. Date palm compost was added once at transplanting in 26 cm dia. pots while Brassinolide was sprayed three times during the experiment period. The results showed that soil treated with 300 g. pot-1 of date palm waste compost or spraying the seedlings with Brassinolide at 15 mg. L-1 resulted in higher values of increase in plant height, stem diameter, number of branches, inflorescence length, number of inflorescences, florescence diameter, and plant content of chlorophyll, auxin and Brassinolide. In general, it was found that the interaction treatment of 300 g. pot-1 compost and 15 mg. L-1 foliar Brassinolide led to the highest significant values in the increase of plant height (42.33 cm), number of branches (5.66 branch. plant- 1), main stem diameter (5.20 mm), inflorescence length (19.43 cm), leaf content of Brassinolide (2.80 μg. g-1). While the same compost level interacted with 10 mg. L-1 foliar Brassinolide resulted in the highest number of inflorescence (7.66 inflorescences. Plant-1), florescence diameter (2.46 cm), leaf content of chlorophyll (20.18 mg. 100g-1 FW) and auxin (3.06 μg. g-1) showing significant difference from the other interactions and the control treatment

Abstract

Afforestation is one of the most important means of protecting cities from climatic conditions, and it is natural for the university city of the University of Kufa campus to face harsh weather fluctuations all the year especially in summer. This study was conducted with the aim of relying on afforestation to improve the environment with in the university campus. The study found a significant increase in solar radiation intensity in streets, parking lots, and unused spaces, Which reached (1788, 1791, and 1636) LUX in the morning, and (1782, 1749, and 1693) LUX in the afternoon, compared to gardens containing trees and green areas and under the shade of trees, where the solar radiation intensity decreased to (1044, 1062) LUX in the morning and (1068 and 1089) LUX in the afternoon., respectively. Similarly, the temperature in streets, parking lots, and unused spaces reached (37 and 44, 37 and 43, 37 and 43) C° in the morning and afternoon, compared to gardens containing trees and green areas and under the shade of trees, which recorded the lowest values, reaching (33 and 40, 33 and 40) C°. We also observe a decrease in source of the noise and distance of source from sensor in gardens containing trees and green areas and under the shade of trees, as it reached (49.3 and 41.7, 49.2 and 46.8) dBA, compared to main asphalt-paved streets and parking lots where the sound intensity reached (60.3 and 61.8, 61.2 and 62.3) dBA in the morning and afternoon due to the absence of afforestation, which plays a significant role in reducing sound intensity. The leaves, branches, and twigs of trees, green areas, and grasses work as a single interconnected unit that absorbs sound wave vibrations and disperses noise, in addition to their suitability for daily activities such as recreation, exercise, and relaxation, which contributes to reducing stress and improving mental health. Green spaces also serve as a hub for social interaction and community participation, enhancing the sense of belonging and promoting social cohesion. This study emphasizes the essential role of urban green spaces in promoting environmental health by improving air quality, regulating temperature, and enhancing overall well-being, and that recognizing the multifaceted benefits of these spaces is crucial for achieving sustainability on the University of Kufa campus.

Abstract

Interest in the design of the university campus, its landscape, and its sustainability has emerged as a new trend that enriches the connection between the campus buildings and their natural landscapes on one hand, and between humans and their environment on the other. This provides an opportunity for contemplating nature, making the campus site less consumptive of available natural resources, and enhancing safety and security for site occupants while maintaining the same level of quality and efficiency in its function. It also aims to achieve environmentally compatible design to meet the requirements of the current generation and ensure the rights of future generations, and to achieve a state of balance within the university environment that more effectively serves environmental, social, and economic aspects, and considers the integration of the landscape with the buildings to achieve a sustainability system. This integration makes the university environment understandable and provides a sense of security, orientation, and beauty, which requires designing sustainable natural landscapes with a suitable function for university members' use and distinctive environmental characteristics that achieve human comfort and renew vitality. The study's problem was the lack of interest and knowledge in the sustainability of the natural landscape and its connection to global sustainability standards, which resulted in a failure to achieve thermal comfort and an increased depletion of energy sources and available resources. Additionally, many problems suffered by the university campus were observed, as well as problems affecting the achievement of sustainability from environmental, social, and economic aspects, with a clear deficiency in the natural landscapes achieving their environmental, economic, social, and aesthetic goals due to neglect, weak planning, disregard for their environmental needs, and the lack of complementary components in most natural landscapes. Therefore, a proposed design was suggested that addresses a number of mechanisms that can be implemented to overcome these problems and achieve the sustainability of the natural landscape for the University of Kufa campus.

Abstract

The importance of campus green spaces lies in their planting with various plants (trees, shrubs, green spaces, etc.) which work to purify the air, reduce the intensity of solar radiation and temperatures, increase humidity in the atmosphere, and decrease wind speed, which results in achieving thermal comfort for campus occupants. This is what the results of the study proved, as the temperature, amount of solar radiation, relative humidity, and wind speed under the canopy of trees in the gardens planted with grass in the morning and afternoon were 36.7 and 37.1 C°, 1031 and 1551 candelas, 43.3%, 34.3%, 0.9, and 1.2 m s-1, respectively, compared to what was measured in the paved streets recorded41.6 and 45.3 °C, 5587 and 6933 candelas, 23%, 20.6%, 2.9, and 2.8 m s-1, respectively, At midday, the microclimatic contrast between tree-lined areas and paved streets manifested in mean differences of up to 8 C° in air temperature, 5382 candelas in solar radiation intensity, 13.7% in relative humidity, and 1.6 m s-¹ in wind velocity. The results also showed that plants had a significant impact on reducing sound intensity (noise) under the tree canopy in turf-planted gardens in the morning and afternoon, with levels of 52.7 and 51.8 dB, compared to levels of 66.7 and 65.6 dB, respectively. Plants were more effective at absorbing sounds at higher frequencies. The results thus demonstrate the significant impact of plants in improving the microclimate and reducing noise in outdoor environments

Abstract

Abstract A pot trial was conducted to identify the effect of adding rice organic residues (ROR) to the potting soil and spraying chelated zinc (CZn) on the growth, flowering, and corm characteristics of the Freesia hybrida plant. An RCBD experiment was adopted with two factors and three replicates. ROR comprised three levels (0, 4, and 8%), and CZn included three concentrations (0, 20, and 40) mg.L-1. The findings revealed that applying ROR at 8% and spraying CZn at 20 mg.L-1 significantly increased leaf number, shoot dry weight, total chlorophyll content in fresh leaves, and total soluble carbohydrate content in dry leaves (6.66 leaves.plant-1, 8.76 g DW, 48.79 mg.100 g-1 FW, and 1.50 g DW) respectively. Also, the same treatment combination realized significant results for the number of florets per inflorescence, floret diameter, floret vase life, number of corms per plant, and corm diameter by (12.85 florets.inflorescence-1, 7.03 cm, 8 days, 3.66 corms.plant-1, and 2.33 cm) consecutively. Further, adding ROR at 8% and spraying CZn at 40 mg.L-1 significantly increased the number of inflorescences (5.33 inflorescences.plant-1) and inflorescence length (39.10 cm). Keywords: Freesia plant, Rice organic residues, Chelated Zinc.

Abstract

Abstract: The effects of foliar application with organic fertilizer 'Hu Kufa' and thiamine were evaluated on growth, flowering and flower quality of Dutch bulbs grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. Iris plants were sprayed twice with commercial Kufa Iris tingitana organic fertilizer (0, 2.5, 5 or 7.5) ml L and/or with Thiamine (B1) (0, 20, 40 or 60 mg L ). The first spray was 40 and 47 days post planting for the organic fertilizer -1 -1 and thiamin, respectively, while the second spray application was 21 days post the first spray. The organic fertilizer, especially of thiamine, resulted in significant increase in all the studied parameters including vegetative growth, flowering and leaf and nutrients in flower. In general, interaction of Kufa Hu at highest concentration (7.5 ml L ) and thiamine at 20 and 40mg L resulted in a significant decrease in number of days -1 -1 required for flowering and a significant increase in the length of flower stalk, flower diameter and vase life compared to the lower concentrations of organic fertilize

Abstract

Abstract A nursery experiment was carried out during 2011 - 2012 at Najaf, Iraq, to determine the response of marigold plant to organic fertilisers and their extracts. A factorial experiment was conducted involving three factors (2 x 4 x 2) namely, type of compost (the extracts of peat moss and sheep manure), concentrations of foliar application (0%, 20%, 40% and 60%), and the mixed in soil and foliar application. The results showed that the type of organic fertiliser and the application method significantly affected vegetative growth (leaf number/plant, shoot dry weight, leaf chlorophyll content, and carbohydrate leaf content), and flowers parameters (length of the flower stem, flower number/plant, and flower diameter). This study showed that compared to the other fifteen treatment conditions, the application of extract of sheep manure applied at 40% concentration and as a foliar spray produced superior results on both vegetative growth and flower parameters.

Abstract

Abstract. Due to the importance of cultivating and trading freesia corms and studying the possibility of increasing and multiplying freesia flowers to meet consumer needs. The study aimed to evaluate the application of different levels of jasmonic acid and nanomagnesium in the growth and flowering of freesia plants. Therefore, an experiment was carried out at the Scientific Research Station of the College of Agriculture - University of Kufa during the agricultural season 2023-2024. The yellow Wintergold corms, produced by the Turkish company Asyalale, were planted on 10/20/2023 in plastic pots with a diameter of 25 cm in an agricultural medium of river sand and peat moss at a ratio of 3:1, weighing 5 kg, at a rate of one plant per pot. Spraying was done with jasmonic acid at four concentrations (0, 10, 20 and 30) mg.L-1, or nanomagnesium, at four concentrations (0, 40, 80 and 120) mg.L-1. The spraying was carried out three times, the first spraying was when the true leaves appeared and the spraying was done twice. Others with an interval of 21 days. The parameters were applied in a factorial experiment with two factors and three replications, and (R.C.B.D) Randomized complete Block Design 4×4×3 = 48. The results showed that spraying jasmonic acid at a concentration of 30 mg.L-1 with nanomagnesium at concentrations of 80 and 120 mg.L-1 . The best results that recorded a significant increase in the dry weight of the shoot, the number of days required for the flower stand to appear, the number of days required for flowering, the number of florets in the inflorescence, the number of corms, the nitrogen content of the leaves, the potassium content of the leaves and the magnesium content of the leaves were in the treatment. The interaction was 30 mg.L-1 jasmonic and 120 mg.L-1 nanomagnesium, which did not differ from the interaction of jasmonk at the same concentration with 80 mg.L-1 nanomagnesium. The mentioned interaction treatments differed significantly from the individual treatments and was also significantly different from the control treatment in all the studied parameters.
