Abstract

Background: Understanding the characteristics of patients and temporal patterns of emergency department visits is crucial for improving service management and optimizing resource allocation. Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the demographic and clinical profiles of patients and determine the reasons and temporal patterns of visits to the emergency department of Al-Hakeem Hospital in Najaf, Iraq, in 2025. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients visiting the emergency department during a consecutive three-month period in the spring of 2025. Data on demographics, clinical profiles, visit patterns, diagnoses, and treatment were collected using a structured form. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23, along with descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The mean patient age was 33.75 years. The majority were uninsured, married, urban-residing males, arriving most frequently at night via private transport. Common presentations included abdominal pain/fever/vomiting (25.5%) and trauma (13.9%), with food poisoning being the predominant diagnosis. Most patients were triaged as semi-urgent (67.1%) and had no comorbidities. Average consultation time and ED length of stay were 25.17 minutes and 3.3 hours, respectively. The majority recovered. Visit time (morning, afternoon, night, midnight) showed significant associations with multiple variables such as residence, marital status, occupation, insurance status, triage level, chief complaints, diagnosis, disease severity, physical activity, and performed tests (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Temporal patterns and individual characteristics have a significant influence on ED visits. These findings can help optimize staffing during peak hours, target training for common conditions, and improve resource planning for uninsured patients.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic disorders: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis that result in inflammation or ulceration (or both) of the bowel. Both disorders have striking similarities but also several differences. Approximately 10% to 15% of patients with IBD have characteristics of both disorders and cannot be definitively diagnosed with either disorder and are classified as having indeterminate colitis. The prevalence of IBD in the United States has increased in the past century; it is estimated that 1.3% of adults are diagnosed with IBD (CDC, 2019). Aim: Study aims to assess health-related quality of life among Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients. Methodology: A descriptive study design was conducted at Al-Najaf city in the southern region of Iraq in Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Health Directorate/ Specialized Hospital for Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease and Surgery from February 20th, 2023, to May 21th, 2023, in order to assess Health-related quality of life among Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients. Abstract

Abstract Background: Risk factors for HCV, HBV transmission are blood transfusions and surgeries before 1992, intravenous drug use, contaminated parenteral drugs and other invasive non-medical procedures (tattooing, piercing). Based on these risk factors, high-risk groups are: multiramified patients (i.e., hemophiliacs), health personnel, intravenous drug users, inmates, individuals with high-risk sexual behaviors (early sex life, high number of sexual partners and prostitution). Other populations at risk are patients on extracorporeal circulation system, such as end-stage kidney disease patients on hemodialysis program. Study aim: To determine risk factors for patients with hepatitis B and C in hemodialysis unit. Methodology: A descriptive study design was conducted at Al-Najaf city in the southern region of Iraq in Al-Sadder Medical City and Al-Hakim General Hospital from February 20th, 2023, to May 23th, 2023, in order to assess risk factors for patients with hepatitis B and C in hemodialysis unit. The methodological strategies for data collection used an assessment questionnaire survey. Results: As the study shows, that the risk factors that cause the most infection are hemodialysis sessions, contact with infected persons, and injected medication, while the lowest risk factors to spread infection are children born with infected hepatitis and unprotected sexual contacted. Conclusion: The study concludes that the first leading risk factor for infection is the hemodialysis session, while the contact with infected persons and contaminated injections of medication comes in the second place. Recommendations: Careful monitoring and strict adherence to infection control procedures among patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, including commitment to sterilization of hemodialysis devices and the use of all preventive measures when starting the hemodialysis procedure.
