Abstract

This research stems from the urgent need to address the complex challenges faced in multimodal transportation within the cargo sector, particularly concerning the reduction of transportation costs and CO2 emissions. Existing transportation systems often struggle to efficiently balance economic and environmental concerns, necessitating innovative solutions. In this paper, we have introduced a novel mathematical model that integrates Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), Genetic Algorithms (GA), and the Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). The synergy of GA and the ANFIS forms a dynamic learning system that continually refines solutions by adapting to historical decisions and aligning with supply-demand dynamics. This integrated approach aims to optimize cost allocation and resource utilization while simultaneously minimizing CO2 emissions. Deploying the ANFIS+GA+SVD model in multimodal scenarios yields impressive results, with a minimal average percentage error (MAPE) of 0.28% for transportation costs and a remarkable coefficient of determination R2 of 0.992 for the Truck + Ship scenario. Similarly, a MAPE of 0.11% for CO2 emissions, supported by an impressive R2 of 0.989, underscores the model's accuracy. Observations of people's transportation choices in response to emission price changes reveal a significant decrease in truck usage, plummeting from 84% to below 50%. Alternative transportation methods, especially in the 3S-3 M-3 C scenario, show a substantial surge, with railways leading at a remarkable 30% increase in utilization. The combined quantity and cost comparison, utilizing the ANFIS+GA+SVD model, emphasizes the suitability of the Truck + Ship scenario for Iraq's transportation network, reinforcing the case for sustainable and efficient multimodal transportation systems.

Abstract

This study underscores the growing significance of multimodal transportation within the cargo sector and its consequential environmental impacts. We present a novel mathematical model for operation scheduling, incorporating variables such as resource availability, customer service benchmarks, and environmental considerations. Our objective is to mitigate transportation expenses and reduce delivery delays. The proposed approach advocates LU decomposition with a pivot strategy for rapid model resolution, adherence to convergence criteria, optimization of cost strategies, and efficient resource utilization. Leveraging the adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and genetic algorithm (GA), our methodology facilitates learning from past decisions to enhance solutions, aligning supply, and demand efficiently. We evaluate financial and environmental implications across four scenarios, offering insights into the economic and environmental advantages of various transportation modes—trains, ships, airplanes—compared to truck transportation, with a specific focus on CO2 emission impacts. Implementing the ANFIS+GA model in multimodal scenarios yield impressive results: minimal MAPE transportation cost of 0.17%, R2 transportation cost of 0.996, MAPE CO2 emissions of 0.13%, and R2 CO2 emissions of 0.996. By identifying cost-efficient routes and optimizing resource allocations, our approach enables informed decisions regarding vehicle distribution, supplier selection, and contract negotiations. Additionally, we use LU decomposition to establish the supplier risk threshold, crucial for comparing emission trade variances. Multimodal scenarios typically yield lower emissions, favoring buying emission allowances low and selling them high. Notably, the risk threshold affects low-emission provider utilization, impacting transportation emissions. With a risk threshold of 0.12 and an emission price of 1.2, our ANFIS+GA-based multimodal approach achieves a significant −20% deviation in CO2 emissions.

Abstract

In the context of Iraq’s evolving transportation landscape and the strategic implications of the Belt and Road Initiative, this study pioneers a comprehensive framework for optimizing multimodal transportation systems. The study implemented a decision-making framework for multimodal transportation, combining data envelopment analysis (DEA) efficiency scores and a Markov decision process (MDP) to optimize transportation strategies. The DEA scores captured decision-making unit (DMU) performance in various aspects, while the MDP rewards facilitated strategic mode selection, promoting efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental considerations. Although our method incurs a total cost approximately 29% higher than MRMQoS, it delivers a nearly 26% reduction in delay compared to MCSTM. Despite MRMQoS yielding an 8.3% higher profit than our approach, our proposed scheme exhibits an 11.7% higher profit compared to MCSTM. In terms of computational time, our method achieves an average CPU time positioned between MCSTM and MRMQoS, with MCSTM showing about 1.6% better CPU time than our approach, while our method displays a 9.5% improvement in computational time compared to MRMQoS. Additionally, concerning CO2 emissions, the proposed model consistently outperforms other models across various network sizes. The percentage decrease in CO2 emissions achieved by the proposed model is 7.26% and 31.25% when compared against MRMQoS and MCSTM for a network size of 25, respectively.

Abstract

Multimodal freight transport allows switching among various modes of transportation to efficiently utilize transport facilities. A multimodal transport system incorporates geographical scales from global to local. Travel time estimation in a multi-modal cargo transportation network is essential for enhancing supply chain (SC) and logistics operations. Accurate travel time prediction is of great importance for cargo transportation, as it enables SC participants to increase logistics efficiency and quality. It requires adequate input data, which can be generated. In recent times, the machine learning (ML) algorithm has been well-suited to resolve complex and nonlinear relationships in the collected tracking data. This study designs a deep learning-powered travel time estimation in multimodal freight transportation networks (DLTTE-MFTN) technique. The goal of the DLTTE-MFTN technique is to estimate the travel time using a hyperparameter-tuned ensemble learning approach. To achieve this, the DLTTE-MFTN method initially undergoes data pre-processing to convert the input raw data into a useful format. In addition, the singular value decomposition (SVD) model can be applied for feature dimensionality reduction in multimodal transport data, considerably improving travel time prediction. Besides, the DLTTE-MFTN method estimates travel time using an ensemble of three DL approaches including one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), stacked autoencoder (SAE) attention, and recurrent neural network (RNN). Finally, the hyperparameter tuning of the DL models takes place using the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). The performance analysis of the DLTTE-MFTN method takes place using the Kaggle dataset. The experimental results stated that the DLTTE-MFTN technique attains superior performance over other ML and DL models.

Abstract

Intelligent manufacturing system incorporates a number of sensors including IoT devices, cameras, and scanners, for capturing real-time data about the manufacturing process. Based on their physical properties, colours, dimensions, or other relevant characteristics, these sensors can be used to track and identify waste objects. Waste object classification in intelligent manufacturing includes the usage of recent systems and technologies to detect and classify waste materials or objects produced during the manufacturing process. The objective is to enable effective waste management and recycling practices, optimizing resource utilization and reducing environmental impact. Manual waste classification is a laborious and expensive task, which results in the development of automatic waste classification models using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. It remains a challenging process due to the significant variations in the solid waste because of varying shapes, colours, and sizes. Therefore, recent advances in deep learning (DL) methods can be employed to accomplish the solid waste classification process. The study introduces a chaotic African vulture optimization algorithm with a deep learning-based solid waste classification (CAVOA-DLSWC) system. The CAVOA-DLSWC technique aims to automatically detect waste objects and classify them into different categories using DL models. In the presented CAVOADLSWC approach, two major processes are involved such as object classification and detection. For the object detection method, the CAVOA-DLSWC technique uses a lightweight RetinaNet model with CAVOA based hyperparameter tuning process. The CAVOA is derived by integrating the chaotic concepts into the initial iteration values of the AVOA. Once the waste objects are identified, the classification process can be performed by the use of convolutional long short-term memory (CLSTM) network. The experimental values of the CAVOA-DLSWC approach can be tested employing the solid waste database including diverse kinds of waste objects. The comparative results show the remarkable performance of the CAVOA-DLSWC method over other techniques.
