JournalIOP Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science
Date2025-11-01
Abstract

This study investigates the influence of slope position, soaking, and leaching on the geotechnical properties of soils from a sloping site in Annajaf city, Iraq, integrating field Plate Load Tests (PLT) and laboratory analyses. Soil samples from the slope top (compacted, poorly-graded silty sand, SP-SM) and bottom (natural, silty sand, SM with higher fines, gypsum, and organics) were characterized. PLTs were conducted under natural and soaked conditions at varying distances (X = 5m, 10m) from the crests of two slopes (θ = 37°, 41°), where X is the horizontal distance from the slope crest to the center of the test plate. Laboratory tests included Standard Proctor compaction and direct shear tests on natural, soaked, and leached specimens prepared to field density. Results indicate soaking dramatically reduced the modulus of subgrade reaction (k) derived from PLTs by 6-27% related to the slope geometry and the laboratory-measured friction angle (Φ) by 35-43%. Leaching altered compaction parameters (MDD, OMC) and shear strength, influenced by initial soil composition. Steeper slopes and proximity to the crest further decreased soil stiffness (k). While compaction mitigated the weakening effect of saturation on the slope top compared to the natural bottom soil, significant reductions in k and Φ still occurred. The findings highlight the necessity of considering slope geometry, position, potential saturation, and leaching effects, using combined field and laboratory data for robust geotechnical design on slopes.

Date2025-01-01
Abstract

In this investigation, the soil-water-retention is described in the soil-water-characteristics-curve (SWCC). SWCC contains the data required to explain the unsaturated soils' mechanical behavior. The reliable findings of unsaturated sand soil tests and the impact of initial density on the hydraulic properties under various matric suction and net normal stresses are examined. The tests are carried out on a sample of soil from the northern region of Al-Najaf city, Iraq. The sample of soil has been disturbed and remolded in the cell of Oedometer device. A modified high-air-entry-disc-based Oedometer is used with accessories to control the air and water pressures to achieve the specific matric suction in the unsaturated test. Two sets of tested specimens are prepared, first, at 90% and second at 95% of the maximum dry unit weight from the standard Proctor experiment. Each set is performed for different matric suction under 200 and 400 kPa net normal stress. (SWCC) The soil water retention curve is affected by the application of net normal stress and initial density. There is a decrease in water volume change with wetting progress in unsaturated soil tests due to an increase in soil density.

Abstract

A relevance between moisture content in a soil and suction is shown by the soil water characteristics curve (SWCC). The recent paper focuses on the stress-dependent SWCC for gypseous sand soils from Al-Najaf city, Iraq. The stress-SWCC is investigated using a modified Oedometer cell under controlled entry of water and air to apply a certain matric suction. A range of matric suction from 90 kPa to 0 kPa was performed. Three net normal stresses, 100, 200, and 400 kPa (such stresses were selected due to their availability with the sampling device, with double stress) were selected in the tests. The effect of stresses and matric suction on water volume changes, degree of saturation, and soil water characteristics curve of the soil were studied. The results show that there are a shifting value of the SWCC with the change of the normal stresses, while the normal stress is increased, the values of volumetric water content are decreased up to -17% under the net normal stress of 400 kPa. New fitting parameters of the SWCC’s equation are found to represent the obtained data.

Abstract

Gypsum is a soluble bonding substance that is one of the soil's problematic components in Iraq's west. This component dissolves during the wetting process. The behavior of bonded soils under saturated conditions has received much attention, while the estimation of unsaturated bonded soils has received only a few experimental investigations. Researchers examined the remolded specimens without considering the soil's sensitivity. The impact of gypsum re-bonding after a period of sample remolding on the behavior of gypseous sand during a decrease in matric suction (wetting) is investigated. The soil samples were taken from the Iraqi city of Al-Najaf. The unsaturated oedometer tests were conducted out on two remolded specimens for comparative purposes. The first set of testing was conducted immediately after the remolding, and the second set was conducted one week later. Both sets were then loaded under net normal stress of 442 kPa and different matric suction, 50, 20, and 0 kPa (saturation). The results showed that re-bonding after a one-week post-remolding affected the mechanical properties of the soil samples, i.e., decreasing slightly in the settlement. At the same time, a longer time may have a more significant effect.

Date2023-07-01
Abstract

This recent paper is focused on the effect of multiple matric suctions (90, 50, 20, 10, 7, 2, and 0 kPa) on gypseous sand in the short-term on the deformation of the Oedometer cell specimen under net stresses of 100, 200 and 400 kPa. The specimen was prepared from disturbed samples according to a degree of compaction of 90%. This percentage of density (90%) was relied upon to compare the results with a previous study, which was conducted on the same type of soil with the same density, but without the influence of external stresses. The soil samples were represented the Al-Jameah district in Al-Najaf city, Iraq. The results illustrate an increase in the deformation within a decreasing of the matric suction (wetting) under different normal stresses. The final settlement of the specimen is related to the initial load-settlement value before wetting. The deformation rate is clear and greatest when the stress is ≥200 kPa with similar rates. Low collapse potentials are revealed due to wetting progress, and this may be attributed to the short-term process (a few hours).

Date2023-02-13
Abstract

As a result of rainfall in large quantities, the leachate generated under the municipal solid waste (MSW) is increased, which leaks to the groundwater aquifers and pollutes it. Accurate evaluation of leachate leaks levels has long been regarded as a problem in Iraq due to a lack of reliable data and costly measuring costs. This work proposes a novel fuzzy expert system to predict the pollution status of the underground water in sandy soils. The expert system consists of two subsystems; fuzzy logic system and crisp logic system. The expert system is trained using a data set developed by finite element analysis of sandy soil subjected to contamination materials.

Abstract

This paper presents laboratory experiments on the effect of matric suction on the compressibility of unsaturated gypsum sand soil. The samples were obtained from Al-Najaf city in Iraq with gypsum contents of 14%, 22%, and 29%. Two series of laboratory tests were conducted. The first one is loading-path likes when a building is constructed on these soils in a specific degree of saturation (specific matric suction). Four matric suctions were adopted; 100, 60, 30, and zero percentages of initial matric suction under two confining stresses; 100 kPa and 200 kPa. Also, two saturated tests (CD) were performed under the aforementioned confining stresses. The second method is wetting-path, likes when a structure has been constructed and the degree of saturation of a foundation soil increases (decreasing in matric suction). The results from both paths revealed that the volumetric strains were increased by decreasing the matric suction and increasing the gypsum content.. ARTICLE HISTORY

Abstract

This study presents the impact of chloride ion present in the soil in contact with reinforced concrete in the initiation of corrosion of steel reinforcement. The factors affecting the corrosion process due to the penetration of chloride ion from chloride bearing soils in contact with concrete specimens, representing different reinforced concrete members, were studied. The results proved that there exists a threshold limit for the concentration of soil-borne chloride ion, to initiate the corrosion. The value of this limit was related to the thickness of the concrete cover, concrete grade, besides the type of exposure (number of sides exposed to chloride attack). It was shown that the safe percentage of chloride ion in the groundwater and soil in contact with concrete was 2% in aqueous extract (0.4% in soil) when the thickness of the concrete cover was not less than 50 mm. This proportion could reach 6% in aqueous extract (1.2% in soil), when the cover thickness was not less than 75 mm, or when the concrete possessed a 35 MPa compressive strength as well as exposed on one side only. Consequently, special limitations for the permissible proportions of chloride ion in soils in contact with reinforced concrete members should be established by design codes.

Abstract

Gypsum is a soluble material, and it is one of the problematic components in the soil in the west of Iraq. Al-Najaf is one of the governorates in Iraq which suffers from the gypsum content in different levels. The soil of the city is mainly sand-sized particles bonded by different percentages of gypsum. The main problem of this component is the dissolution upon the wetting process in unsaturated conditions. This paper investigates the effect of decreasing the matric suction (wetting) on soil deformation under a specific stress level. A modified Oedometer setup is used to perform the tests, including the application of air and water pressures up to achieve the specific matric suctions. The investigation includes three matrics suctions of (50, 20, and 0 kPa) and each under three net normal stresses of 221 kPa, 442 kPa and 885 kPa respectively. The soil specimens are remolded to 95% of the maximum dry density from the proctor test. The results revealed that the highest value of collapse potential (CP) is under the stress of 221kPa. The greatest part of the CP is achieved before the saturation of the soil. This issue must be considered in the analysis and design of the foundation in unsaturated gypseous sandy soils as an improvement issue.

Date2017-09-01
Abstract

This paper is an extension and continuation of an earlier work by the authors on the phenomenon of meandering in Al-Abbasia reach located in the middle of the Euphrates river, Najaf governorate in Iraq. The authors have developed several power functions models and models depending on dimensional analysis and Buckingham π-theorem for modeling and predicting the hydraulic geometry of the selected reach. The paper employs the nonlinear regression technique for developing mathematical models for computing the width and mean depth of the reach depending on its hydraulic characteristics. This paper is part of an M. Sc. thesis carried out in 2014. The developed relationships are straightforward to be applied in design and analysis with results of high acceptability; the reach width (W) model is with R2 of 0.97 while the reach mean depth (Dm) model is with R2 of 0.93. Different statistical methods have been utilized to compare among the different models. The results reveal that the non-linear regression models are the best models to correlate the different characteristics of the reach.

Abstract

Most of the hydraulic geometry relationships derived under premises that there are direct or indirect relation, at least statistically, between meander geometry characteristics include width, depth, cross sectional area and some hydraulic variables as discharge and velocity. The hydraulic variables satisfy for rectangular channels the continuity equation. The authors developed four power functions for predicting the hydraulic geometry properties of Abbasia reach, in the middle of the Euphrates river, Najaf governorate. These power models with certain coefficients(a, c, k and p) and exponents (b, d, m and n). The recent work is to perform the continuity of the results on the predicted models in previous paper. The results indicate that there was an remarkable degree of consistency for both coefficients and exponents.

Abstract

Most of the hydraulic geometry relationships derived under premises that there are direct or indirect relation, at least statistically, between meander geometry characteristics and some hydraulic variables as discharge and velocity. The authors, based on-a-site investigation on Al-Abbasia reach, in the middle of the Euphrates river, Najaf governorate, developed power functions (four models). The study-reach is about six kilometers, it is divided into twenty one cross-sections. These sections represent the meanders and bends in the reach. The recent work is to develop models depending on dimensional analysis and Buckingham Pi theorem. These models are correlate the river width and mean depth with other geometry and hydraulic characteristics. The statistical comparison of the different methods illustrate that the method of dimensional analysis gives higher results in width model comparing with method of power function and lower in mean depth, but acceptable.

Abstract

The infiltration characteristics of the soil are an important component of the hydrological conditions. They are one of the components of the water balance and are necessary to describe the runoff response by a runoff model, in addition to describe the effect of water movement on the changing of the soil properties within infiltration. The present work emphasis on the characteristics of the infiltration by using laboratory model. This model is performed on the remoulded sample of specific density for different heads of water, 10, 20, and 30cm. The results revealed that there are significant effect of the water head with high interaction of the wetting conditions of the soil sample. A comparison was made with the results of field infiltration work, made by Mohammed Sh. Al Shakerchy, 2006. A statistical analysis was made to develop a relationship among the different studied parameters and between the field and laboratory works.

Abstract

Al Najaf is one of the important cities of Iraq due to the high religious attraction for Moslems. It is expected to have a huge development program in the coming few years. Groundwater (sub surface water) is one of the essential problems of city soil that affect the durability of the different structural projects. These problems divided into two main groups, first, problems during construction below the groundwater level, and second, problems during the life of the project (with changing the soil properties by groundwater movement). The present paper discuss, first, the reasons leaded to accumulation of groundwater in the city and second, the problems of the groundwater in the city soil with presenting the suggested solutions to avoid expected failure of the structures.
