مختصر البحثThe current study was aimed to investigate tick prevalence and identify Babesia species
infected ticks of Iraqi one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) based on polymerase chain
reaction, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. A total of 180 camels of various ages and both
sexes were randomly examined clinically for the presence of tick specimens during the period from
the beginning of December 2020 to the end of August 2021 at the abattoir of Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf
province, Iraq. The results confirmed that an overall prevalence of tick infestation was (77.22%)
with an intensity (12.99%), where hindlimbs and perianal regions recorded the highest infestation
rate (48.78%). All collected ticks belonged to two genera Hyalomma spp. (97.72%)
and Rhipicephalus spp. (2.27%). No correlation between tick infestation and risk factors (age and
sex), regarding to months there were a significant differences (P ≤ 0.05), where the highest
infestation rate was in August (100%). Molecular study based on nested PCR for the mitochondrial
cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COX1) gene revealed that two species of Babesia, including
Babesia bigemina 27% and Babesia bovis 8% infected Hyalomma spp. with significant differences
(P ≤ 0.05). For confirmation, DNA sequencing and phylogenetic tree relationship analysis of local
Babesia species and isolates related to the NCBI-Blast homology sequence indicated that the local
Babesia bigemina camel tick isolates No.1-3 showed closed genetic related into NCBI-BLAST
Babesia bigemina Thailand isolate (MW307308.1) with genetic homology sequence identity
(98.19%-99.62%) and local Babesia bigemina tick isolates No.4 and 5 showed closed genetic
related into Japan isolate (AB499085.1) with genetic homology sequence identity (98.18%-
99.28%) and local Babesia bovis camel tick isolates No. 1-3 showed closed genetic related into
China isolate (JQ518301.1) with genetic homology sequence identity (99.0%-99.52%) then local
Babesia species isolates were submitted into NCBI Genbank and identified by accession numbers
(OP094082.1, OP094083.1, OP094084.1, OP094085.1 and OP094086.1) for B.
bigemina (OP094079.1, OP094080.1 and OP094081.1) for B. bovis.

مختصر البحثThe current study was carried out to determine Babesia species infections in Iraqi one-humped
camels (Camelus dromedarius) based on microscopic and molecular methods. During the period
from the beginning of December 2020 to the end of August 2021, 180 blood samples were
randomly collected from camels of various ages and both sexes at the slaughter house of Al-Najaf
Al-Ashraf province, Iraq. Giemsa stained blood smear examination revealed that 19/180 (10.55%)
of camels positive for Babesia spp. infections. In relation to Babesia prevalence and the risk
factors, the highest infection rate was at the age of > 1 year (adults) 18/133 (13.53%), females had
the highest infection rate 5/27 (18.51%) compared to males was 14/153 (9.15%); the prevalence
of Babesia spp. is distributed over the months of the study, except for January and February.
However, the highest infection rate was recorded on August 6/20 (30%). Molecular study results
based on nested PCR for the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (coxI) gene showed
that two species of Babesia, including Babesia bigemina with a high prevalence 21/100 (21%) and
Babesia bovis 3/100 (3%) infected camels. For confirmation, DNA sequencing and phylogenetic
tree relationship analysis (Mega 6.0) of local Babesia species and isolates related to the NCBIBlast homology sequence indicated that the local Babesia bigemina camel blood isolates No.1- 5
showed closed genetic related into NCBI-BLAST Babesia bigemina China isolate (JQ518300.1)
with genetic homology sequence identity (98.39%-99.60%) and local Babesia bovis camel blood
isolates No. 1 and 2 showed closed genetic related into NCBI-BLAST Babesia bovis China isolate
(JQ518301.1) with genetic homology sequence identity (99.13%-99.34%) then local Babesia
species isolates were submitted into NCBI Genbank and identified by accession numbers
(ON454068.1, ON454069.1, ON454070.1, ON454071.1 and OP094087.1) for B. bigemina
(OP146607.1 and OP146608.1) for B. bovis

مختصر البحثPCR identified infection in 69.3 % (104/150) of the samples. There was a significant
difference (P ≤ 0.05) in the infection rate according to the tests. The Prevalence identified in cattle
Theileria prevalence was 61.9% (78/126), and prevalence of Babesia was 20.6% (26/126) & the last
one was less frequently detected. The results also suggest that the demographical picture of samples
according to location & age, the Present results showed that the highest ratio in Al- meshkab
(south of Al-najaf) was (27.8%). While the results showed that the age group between 2 to 3 years
was the most vulnerable age group to piroplasms was recorded 58(46%), followed by age group (1-
2) years 42 (33.3%).
Conclusions: the cattle in Al-najaf province were bearing the infection of piroplasmosis and
recommended that the epidemiological condition calling for using more than two tests like
microscopic examinations & PCR or ME & serological methods together

مختصر البحثThe present study was goal to confirm the presence of piroplasmosis in venous blood of Camelus dromedaries camel from
the slaughtered at the main slaughterhouse of Al-Najaf abattoir at AL-Najaf Al-Ashraf province using microscopically (blood
film) and molecular technique (PCR). A total of 94male camels were blood collected for microscopic examination and PCR
assay to detect the most common of piroplasma parasites which include Thereria spp. and Babasia spp. the study was
beginning from October 2019 till the end of March 2020. Clinical signs and symptoms were recorded in camels, the prevalence
rates using microscopic examination and molecular assay were 8.5 % and 18 %, respectively. The state of being prevalent
rates was varied significantly between the clinical signs (P<0.05) and their causing agents “Theileriosis and Babesiosis”,
except for one clinical sign oculo-nasal discharge, no significant differences were reported (P> 0.05). In conclusion: Polymerase
chain reaction test was showed a higher sensitivity than microscopic examination, and a significant association of some
clinical signs with piroplasma infection in dromedary camels in Iraq

مختصر البحثThis study was conducted to investigate the percentages of infestation of mange Mites in
sheep in different regions of Al-Diwaniyah province and the effects of age, sex of animals on
the prevalence of the disease were studied also. The results of the microscopical examination
of the skin scraping were revealed that 186 of the sheep were infested with mites with an
overall percentage of infestation 3.65%.In this study four genera of Mange Mites were
recorded that parasitized sheep: Sarcoptes scabiei , Psoroptes ovis , Chorioptes spp. ,
Chirodiscoides caviae (fur mite) with rates 31.18%, 52.15%, 8.06%, 2.15% respectively
where the genera of Chorioptes spp. and Chirodiscoides caviae recorded for the first time in
Iraq, in addition to the presence a mixed infestation such as Sarcoptes with Psoroptes 5.91%
and Psoroptes with Chorioptes 0.53%.The prevalence of the infestation was highest in sheep
more than two years old (3.74%) and the lowest in sheep with age less than two years old
(3.40%). The prevalence of Mange Mites in male sheep was 3.93% versus 3.59% in females.
Statistically there were no significant differences (P>0.05) according to the age and sex of
animals, but the differences in percentages of infestation were significant ( p< 0.05) according
to different regions of study
