مختصر البحث

Biscuits are an important type of food, widely consumed by babies in Iraq and other countries. This work uses gamma spectroscopy to measure the natural radioactivity due to long-lived gamma emitters in children’s biscuits; it also estimates radiation hazard indices, that is, the radium equivalent activity, the representative of gamma level index, the internal hazard index, and the annual effective dose in children. Ten samples were collected from the Iraqi market from different countries of origin. The average specific activities for 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K were 9.390, 3.1213, and 214.969 Bq/kg, respectively, but the average of the radium equivalent activity and the internal hazard index were 33.101 Bq/kg and 0.107, respectively. The total average annual effective dose from consumption by adults, children, and infants is estimated to be 0.655, 1.009, and 0.875 mSv, respectively. The values found for specific activity, radiation hazard indices, and annual effective dose in all samples in this study were lower than worldwide median values for all groups; therefore, these values are found to be safe.

مختصر البحث

This work aims to detect and draw the natural radioactivity levels of uranium-238, thorium- 232, and potassium-40 in soil samples taken from Kufa districts, Najaf governorate, Iraq. The detection system used in the study is NaI(Tl) with a “3 × 3” dimension, while maps are drawn by the geographic information system (GIS). Radiological parameters in all samples of the present study due to a specific activity for 238U, 232Th, and 40K were calculated. The results of the average value with standard error in all samples of the present study for 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 235U were 6.2 ± 0.74, 6.41 ± 0.82, 278.10 ± 19.43, and 0.28 ± 0.03 Bq/kg, respectively. The specific activity of Uranium-238, Thorium-232, potassium-40, and Uranium-235 found in all soil samples were within the safety limit (33 Bq/kg for 238U, 45 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 420 Bq/kg for 40K) reported by UNSCEAR, except three samples have potassium-40 higher than the safety limit. In addition, the results of radiological parameters were all found to be below OECD and UNSCEAR safety limits. Generally, the average of specific soil activity was arranged with potassium-40 > thorium-232 > uranium-238. The results of investigating natural radioactivity and radiological parameters of soil samples from Kufa districts were radiologically safe.

مختصر البحث

The study of background radiation is significant for human health. So, the present study was focused on Dose rate (D), Annual Average Effective Dose (AAED) and Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) due to the natural background in soil samples at different sites in Kufa districts at Al-Najaf governorate. All measurement was using portable radiation dosimeter type Inspector Exp. made in the USA. GIS technical also was used for mapping of radiation in all results of background. The average values of D, AAED and ELCR were 0.127±0.005 μSv/h, 1.12±0.04 mSv/y and (3.90±0.15) × 10−3, respectively. The highest values of D and AAED were 0.203±0.020 μSv/hr, and 1.78 mSv/y in Alshorta districts which were lower than the average of worldwide limits of 0.247 μSv/hr and 2.4 mSv/y, respectively. Therefore, results concluded that the risk of background radiation in soil samples in the present study to human health is minimal.

The study of radioactive nuclei concentrations in soils is a very important topic due to the contribution of some factors in increasing these concentrations. Where the nucleus transition to food and then the human and endanger their life. Where taken 15 samples of soils from Al Rahmah district, where a gamma-ray spectrometer system connected with the NaI(TI) detector was used to measure the specific activity of the 226Ra, 232Th and 40K nuclei, the specific activity values were varied from (0.526 -5.385) Bq.kg-1 with mean (2.193 Bq.kg-1) for 226Ra,(0.56 -5.29) Bq.kg-1 with average (2.95 Bq.kg-1) for 232Th and (209.239-990.387) Bq.kg-1 with mean (598.714 Bq.kg-1) for 40K, respectively. Specific activity values showed that there was only a significant increase in 40K concentrations, while that the difference between the rate of Thorium and Radium concentrations was little. External and internal hazard indices, outdoor and indoor absorbed doses and Radium equivalent activity and total annual effective dose which were below the internationally recommended limits. The excess life-time cancer risk (ELCR) was ( 0.717*10-3 ) which compares with the worldwide value (1.45*10-3), this is the first study in this region and can be considered as a baseline for future studies in this area.

مختصر البحث

In this work, un-doped and Manganese doped Zinc Oxide Nanorods (NRs) thin films were grown on the glass substrates using chemical bath deposition method (CBD) at 80 °C temperature. The effect of Mn content (0, 2 and 4%) on the structural, morphology, optical and photoluminescence characteristics of ZnO NRs films was investigated. The XRD patterns of un-doped and Mn-doped ZnO NRs demonstrate sharp and strong peaks together with high crystalline structure. The FESEM images showed that the nanorods of ZnO and Mn:ZnO were well-aligned and distributed throughout the films. The absorption edge was observed to be blue-shifted and the optical energy gap was found to be widening from (3.21, to 3.31) eV with increased Mn content. The photoluminescence spectrum (PL) of Mn-doped samples was examined, at room temperature, and revealed of highly UV emission, whereas the green-yellow wavelengths emissions were enhanced with increased Mn content. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics showed that the photocurrents of all prepared samples are enhanced and the Mn doped samples showed a good response, under UV light.

مختصر البحث

In the current search, we have reported the theoretical analysis by utilizing DFT (TDDFT)- B3LYP at 6-31G (d, p) level on the geometries, optoelectronic and absorption characteristics of novel series of the donor-π-acceptor dyes. The π-conjugated bridge is based on the thiophene, benzene, pyridine, and pyrazine; the thieno [2,3-b] indole has been used as an electron donor (D) and theeacida2-cyanoacrylic has been used as an electron acceptor (A) group. The theoretical information of the electronic structures, such as energy levels (HOMO and LUMO) and energy gap of the molecules, is based on studying the dyes in organic solar cells. Consequently, the energy levels, energy gap, photovoltaic properties, quantum chemical and absorption parameters of all the dyes have been computed and reported. The calculations show that the dyes under study can theoretically be good photosensitizers in DSSCs. Moreover, the results indicate that the LUMO levels of all dyes design lie over the conduction band (Ecb) of the semiconductors TiO2 (or PC70BM) likewise the HOMO levels lie under the decrease potential vitality of the I−/I3 − (electrolytes) in comparison to the ability of electron transfer from the molecular dye excited state to TiO2 (or PC70BM) and chargeerenewal after photo-oxidation process, separately.

This chapter deals with gamma background radiation that is exposed to two major natural sources: normal sources that are earthly gamma rays and astronomical rays. Earthbound gamma rays from radionuclide elements such as thorium, potassium, and uranium. Also, in building and enhancing materials such as medical plants, building purposes, some vegetables and fruits commonly used in markets and soil. The measurements of gamma background radiation differ according to the purpose. So, there are many instruments used such as HPGe detector, NaI (TI) detector, CR-39, a dosimeter, and SSNDT detector. This research will explain in detail the studies and the mechanism for each detector and how it works and the application (practical) studies for each one. The purpose of calculating gamma background radiation is to be in the safe side for human being according to the international union specified with a standard limitation of world average value or with a specific value ranged (standard values) according to the case study in medical, food, or building materials.

مختصر البحث

In this study, the calculation of Frenkel pairs generated as a result of irradiation of (Tungsten Carbide – Cobalt) alloys with nitrogen ions to different ratios of cobalt concentration, The value of radiation doses were(3.7 X〖10〗^19- 1.5X〖10〗^21 N/〖cm〗^2). The hypothetical irradiation was made using nitrogen ions with different energies between (120-180 keV) and a special program was written in "fortran power station 90" to obtain the theoretical results. According to this study,it was found that increasing in nitrogen ions energy causes increase of T(Max) and decreasing in Frenkel pairs generated by nitrogen ions from the range (120-180)keV, and the best increase was at energy (120keV)in tungsten and limited increase in other two types of atoms ( carbon and cobalt) ,because it's affected by another factors such as changing in temperatures and the ratios of cobalt concentration . These Frenkel pairs are generating dislocations and deformations in crystal lattice which in turn lead to an increase the hardness of these alloys.
