Abstract A superficial spectrophotometric method for determination of microgram amounts of 2-isopropyl-5-methyl phenol in pure mouthwash. The technique is based on an oxidative coupling reaction between 2-isopropyl-5-methyl phenol(thymol) and 2,5 di methoxy aniline in the basic medium which shows maximum absorption at 452nm. Beer’s law has obeyed the range of (2-40) μg.ml-1 of thymol. A molar absorptivity (1.6997×104) l mol-1 cm-1, and Sandell index of 0.013μg/cm2. The best conditions for all color development are described and proposed methods were successfully applied to the determination of thymol in mouthwash arrangements. The communal excipients and extracts did not affect in this method.

n this work the use of a mobile phone as a spectrophotometer using camera resolution by installing the software (application store AAP) on the phone (i Phone 6), which analyzes the colour images (RGB) in results with a colour length where it was possible to calculate the colour value of each image representing a specific concentration of the solution under study. A calibration curve with a range of (1 × 10-3 - 6.25 × 10-4) mmole.L-1 using optical image analysis with the concentration of the preparation of potassium permanganate (KMnO4). A calibration curve for statistical correlation range of 0.993 (R2) was found.
