مختصر البحث

Najaf-sea quarry is located in Najaf city about 160 km south west of Baghdad the capital of Iraq. It is the main source that supplies track ballast for maintenance of existing railway network and construction of new railway lines in the middle and southern parts of Iraq. Track ballast experience a complex combination of stresses during its service lifetime, primarily from repeated axial loads of the trains in addition to stresses generated from the environmental conditions. The ideal evaluation of suitability of track ballast must be carried out under real field loading conditions, however such field tests are usually costly and time consuming. On the other hand laboratory model tests simulating field loads under limited boundary conditions can provide satisfactory indication about the suitability of the material. The present paper investigates the deformation characteristics of Najaf-sea track ballast, under repeated loading using model tests simulating ballast conditions under a selected track section. A test setup was designed and manufactured capable of applying both monotonic as well as repeated loading on the track section under different conditions. The repeated model tests which simulate as close as possible the field conditions shed the light on the generated settlement, modulus of deformation and degradation of the ballast particles under different repeated loading levels. Statistical analysis in terms of breakage index and repeated applied load revealed satisfactory correlations that help in understanding the overall performance of the ballast material. The results also demonstrate that 4–5 tamping are capable of controlling both the settlement and modulus of deformation of the ballast material.

The highway designers prefer using open-graded, highly permeable layers to overcome the problem of drainage adequacy (Nchrp 1998). So the material specifications should be checked to assure that Hydraulic conductivity, strength, load-distribution, and construction stability requirements are met. The present work purposes is to accumulate main factors effecting on predict the coefficient of Hydraulic conductivity of different stratification layers and gradation of granular materials used as base and subbase courses by constant-head Hydraulic conductivity tests, within the range of validity of Darcy's law for laminar flow condition. Three types and other four types of sand-gravel mixtures are selected as base and subbase course respectively, locally available and currently used in Iraq as pavement construction materials, brought from Al-niba’i quarry near Baghdad, conform to the general specification for road and bridges (SORB, 2003), which based on the BS, AASHTO, or ASTM specifications in gradation and physical properties. Set up depending in this work, comply with Darcy law for laminar flow with porous media and comply with the requirements of ASTM D2434 and AASHTO T215 for determining of Hydraulic conductivity of the granular materials (Al-saoudi and Shubber, 2008, 2012). Where, granular material was speared in layers with compaction sequentially, confirm with required void ratio percent. Water starts to covering prepared sample gradually and slowly until reach 20 cm height above it, then samples left for 24hr to ensure saturation. A hydraulic gradients create of (i= 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3). The rate of flow was checking each 20 sec, constant rate indicating the validity of the steady state flow. The samples were tested at different voids ratio (e1/e2= 0.6, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, &1.5) and thickness percent (T1/T2= 0.5, 0.66, 1, 1.5, 2) for stratified layers.

This study presents an attempt of experimental study on the effect of adding asphalt emulsion and Portland cement on the engineering properties of sand poorly graded river soil used as subgrade soil in pavement construction. The soil brought from sides of Al-Kufa River in Najaf state middle west of Iraq. Asphalt emulsion used in this study is that manufactured for surfacing and cold paving proposes. While Portland cement is that used in construction building. Percent of adding are (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15) % by weight. Properties of soil studied and presented in this paper are compaction, optimum water content, CBR, and direct shear. Results showed that the adding of asphalt emulsion and cement increase the dry density in different rate. While the optimum water content decrease with increasing asphalt emulsion and increase with increasing cement added. Direct shear of soil stabilized with cement is higher than both natural soil and that stabilized with asphalt emulsion. CBR values showed the same trend of direct shear test results.

مختصر البحث

Marshall Test is the only hot mix asphalt design method depended in Iraq. Asphalt concrete mixtures subjected to continuous heating starting from asphalt plant to compaction location that may be continuous for many hours. Furthermore, these mixtures may subjected to cooling under its compaction temperature for any reason, when reheating them will be requesting matter. Heating and reheating process have an effect on mixtures properties and durability due to its effect on asphalt viscosity. In addition to that, it’s become a major concern for both the state and the contractor to measure these properties. Minor changes in Marshall Properties may be the difference in whether contractor receives full pay or reduced pay for produced mixtures. It is believed that differences in how mixtures are handled and tested have played a role in discrepancies between government agency and contractor test results. The objective of this study was an attempt to evaluate the effects of asphalt mixtures heating and reheating on the Marshall Properties and indirect tensile strength. Mixture from three asphaltic layer (base, binder, surface) courses confirm with Iraqi specification subjected to continuous heating for (3, 6) hr., and another samples leaving to cool in room temperature for (1, 3) day then reheating to compaction temperature. Results showed that the heating of mixtures had a bigger defect on mixture properties than that caused by reheating as compared with initial properties recorded. Furthermore, reheating mixtures after 3 day had no effect as compared with that after 1 day. - See more at: http://www.journalijar.com/article/7478/effects-of-heating-and-reheating-of-hot-mix-asphalts-mixtures-on-marshall-properties-and-indirect-tensile-strength.-/#sthash.HCGLp1ML.dpuf

Operation and maintenance problems of highways network in Iraq are going continuously to worsen in up-keeping and serviceability presented, even although, doubling the effort, appropriation fund, and expenditure amounts on enhancement them, improvement their serviceability, and increase their design age. All the above necessitate searching on the reasons of falling performance levels in the design, construction, operating, and maintenance at the same manner. The main reasons of highways network failure are the fast appearance and increase in intensity of deformation -with absence of periodically maintenance - in the pavement surfaces specially asphaltic pavement or flexible pavement that represent the common and dependable type in construction of that network. The recent research concern in studying the forms and reasons of asphaltic pavement deformations and definition their common reasons that sharing in appear more than one form of deformations according to Iraqi specification and the worldwide specification that depended in Iraq, in addition to compare them with the deformation recorded in the studying region, which is the middle region in Iraq. The recent research reach to that the increasing of traffic loading in weights and repetition, weakness of Subgrade soil, increasing the volume changing in base course duo to deficiency of proper drainage system, in addition to bad asphaltic mixture design are the main reasons causes appearance the most risky types of deformations in pavement surface, that extended in high percent reach to more than 62% depending on five of urban and rural highway sections in the studying region in overall length about 114km approximately, with listing the differences in their geometric design.

The main problems of the institutes concerning with the highways in Iraq, that almost highways network are old and have along years in services without taking in view of points the explosion extension that happen after 2003 in level of numbers, weight, types of vehicles that use the roads and un-normal environments subjected to it the highway structures, as well as the other sides of live in general. Therefor it is a huge important to work hard in maintenance affectations for these great projects in order to elongated their design lives. The current research represent first step to definition the beast ways that can be depended in overlay design, where, in Iraq, the Asphalt Institute Manual (MS-17) depend in overlay design while the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, (AASHTO) depended in pavement design, which have an effect on the performance of the pavements that have a great effect on the services presented by the highway. Four highway segments in the middle district in Iraq, were chosen as a case study for overlay design depending on both procedures of design with comparison.

hroughout urban and suburban areas, congestion at intersections going continuously to worsen, especially, in such high religious tourism cities like Najaf city. One potential treatment to combat congestion and safety problems at intersections is the Median U-Turn Intersection Treatment (MUTIT), which has been used worldwide extensively for many years and has been implemented successfully in recent years. This paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the MUTIT as alternative to conventional, un-signalized and signal-controlled intersections with left turns permitted. Furthermore, presents the design guidelines including the location and design of the median crossovers on the major roads. Many of the guidelines presented here are from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and the 2004 AASHTO Green Book (AASHTO2004) The paper also takes three intersections in Najaf city in traffic volume counting, evaluation as intersection controls by roundabout once and by traffic signal in another, and discusses application criteria for the MUTIT, and presents how the performance of intersections, can be improved.

مختصر البحث

The present paper is an attempt to evaluate the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity of several types of granular materials usually used as base and subbase course materials in pavement construction in Iraq. The selected materials confirmed with S.O.R.B. specifications, (State Organization of Roads and Bridges) issued in Iraq in l986 for granular base and subbase layers. The tests were performed under constant head condition within the range of validity of Darcy’s Law under laminar flow conditions. The regression analysis of the test results revealed an equation that predicts the degree of packing as a function of void ratio and mean particle diameter. The equation can provide quick estimate of the degree of packing which is directly related to the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity of any granular layer

مختصر البحث

Improper drainage of subbase and base course materials is considered as one of the major defects in the structural elements of flexible and rigid pavement. The present work represent a primary attempt to evaluate the coefficient of permeability of five types of base materials confirmed with S.O.R.B. specifications, (State Organization of Roads and Bridges) issued in Iraq in l986. The tests were performed under constant head condition within the range of validity of Darcy’s Law and laminar flow. The results of the regression analysis revealed that the coefficient of permeability is a function of the void ratio, mean particle diameter and degree of backing. These parameters are presented in the form of equations and can provide a quick estimation of the coefficient of permeability of the granular soil
