Purpose: To determine the Correlation between Refractive Error and Central Corneal Thickness in A NAJAF Population with a Wide Range of Ametropia . Setting AL HAKEEM General Hospital, ANAJAF, Iraq. 2014-2015 Patients and methods In a cross sectional observational study, Involved 399 eyes of 200 Patients For whom the central corneal thickness(CCT)was measured with Ultrasonic pachymetry (TOMEY PACHYMETER SP-3000). The refractive error, including sphere, cylinder, and spherical equivalent (SE), were measured with Topcon (KR.8900) autorefractometer And Manual refraction. Examination of anterior segment using slit lamp and fundoscopy using volk + 90 D, were done to exclude any underlying pathology Results The mean age of the study subjects was 30.71(range, 17 to 61 )years. The mean spherical equivalent (SE) of the right eye was -3,2475 Diopter (range,-11.25 to 5.75 Diopters) while SE of the left eye was-3,2035 Diopter (range,-14.5 to 8.5 Diopters). The mean central corneal thickness(CCT) of the right eye 533,1600 Micron (range,407.00 to 635.00 Micron) while CCT of the left eye was 532,7638 Micron (range,394.00 to 630.00 Micron). No significant correlation were found between spherical equivalent (SE) and central corneal thickness (CCT) of right and left eye among the studied group. Conclusion No significant Relation found between Refractive errors and central corneal thickness (CCT).

Objective: To determine the clinical effect of subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab in regression or halting growth in patients with recurrent pterygium. Method and materials: The study was an off-label; 2-dosing, interventional case series involving 20 patients with recurrent pterygium. They received subconjunctival bevacizumab (0.2ml/ 2.5mg). vascularity and thickness of Pterygium was graded. size of the pterygium (measured by surface area in cm2) was recorded from baseline to 6 months, after injection. Treatment-related complications and adverse events were reported. The main outcome of measurements was the change in grading, size, vascularity, thickness and color intensity. Results: 9 males (45%), 11 females (55%) of 20 patients were conducted in study with a mean age of 50.46 years±18.30 (rang 38-70). There was a significant reduction in grading with significant difference in the mean surface area of pterygium at different intervals (P < 0.05) and the size of pterygium was reduced. The reduction of color intensity was significant (P =0.031). No significant topical or systemic adverse reactions were recorded.

مختصر البحث

Aim: This is a Prospective nonrandomized clinical study designed to assess the safety and efficacy of the Implantable collamer Lens (ICL) to treat moderate to high myopia.Material and Methods: It included fifty eyes from 31 patients with between -5.50 and -21.0 diopters (D) of myopia without or with astigmatism up to -2.0 diopters. The Main Outcome Measures were Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), refraction, best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BCVA),IOP, adverse events, operative and postoperative complications, subjective satisfaction, and symptoms. Results: Twelve months postoperatively 54.0% of patients had a visual acuity of 6/12 or better, and 84.0 % had an uncorrected visual acuity of 6/18 or better. Patients averaged a 1.31 line improvement in UCVA and 86.0% were within 0.00 to -1.00 D. Only one case (2%) lost more than2 lines of BCVA. Gains of 2 or more lines of BCVA occurred in 18 cases (36.0%) at 1 year after ICL surgery. Late onset surgically induced anterior subcapsular (AS) opacities were seen in 2 cases (4.0%);and one eye developed traumatic dislocation of ICL at 9 months postoperatively which was repositioned without any visual compromise; iritis developed in one eye (2%) which was first observed at 1 month of the surgery; one of cases had clinically and cosmetically insignificant pupil ovalisation postoperatively. Early postoperative IOP rise (more than 21mmHg) seen only in 3 eyes (6%). Patient satisfaction (very/extremely satisfied) was reported by 96.0% of subjects on the subjective questionnaire. Conclusions: The results support the safety, efficacy, and predictability of ICL implantation to treat moderate to high myopia.

مختصر البحث

Abstract AbstractPurpose: To evaluate the outcomes of primary pterygium excision with adjunctive amniotic membrane transplantation. Methods: In an interventional case series, 25 consecutive patients with primary pterygia underwent surgical excision with transplantation of fresh amniotic membrane onto bare sclera in Al-Hakeem general Hospital at Al Najaf city. Patients were followed for at least 12 months and the results were evaluated in terms of recurrent pterygium growth and complications. Results: 25 of 25 consecutive patients including 14 male and 11 female subjects with mean age of 40±8.8 years were operated. The pterygia extended onto the corneas for 4.2±1.2 (range 3 to 5.5) mm. Only one eye (4%) demonstrated recurrent pterygium growth. Conclusion: Primary pterygium excision with amniotic membrane transplantation is safe and effective surgical technique with low recurrence rate.

مختصر البحث

Background: Pterygium is a proliferative disease with hyperplastic growth of corneoconjunctival fibro vascular tissue onto the cornea. Surgical therapy can be used to successfully manage pterygia; however, recurrence remains a problem. To reduce recurrence, surgical management may include autoconjunctival grafting, lamellar keratoplasty, amniotic membrane transplantation, and intraoperative antimetabolites application. Purpose: To assess the safety and the efficacy of intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) application in preventing recurrence of pterygium after excision. Patients and methods: The study design is a prospective, randomized clinical trial. A total of 50 patients with bilateral pterygium were recruited for the study. The first group of patients (25) underwent surgical excision of the pterygium with bare sclera in one eye and MMC was applied as adjunctive therapy for the other eye. In the second group 5-FU was used instead of MMC. Recurrences and postoperative complications were measured in the two groups. The mean follow up period of the patients was 18.8 months. Chi square test, odds ratio, and frequency distribution were used to determine significance levels; P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: In group 1 the recurrence rate was 8% for the MMC treated eyes and 32% for their fellow eyes (P = 0.03). In group 2 the rate was 18% for the 5-FU treated eyes and 34% for their fellow eyes (P = 0.07). No serious complications were recorded in either group. Conclusion: Both MMC and 5-FU reduce the recurrence rate of pterygium after simple surgical excision; statistically, the effect of the former was significant, but insignificant for the latter. Both antimetabolites were safe during the whole study period, but 5-FU recurrent cases showed cosmetically unacceptable appearances with excessive vascularization. MMC, but not 5-FU, is recommended as an adjunctive therapy to prevent recurrence of pterygium after surgical excision.
