DRAMA IN EDUCATION WITH REFERENCE TO SHAKESPEARE'S SELECTED PLAYS

AuthorsHind Sabah Bilal
JournalInternational Journal of Language Academy
Abstract

Abstract This paper tackles the issue of using drama as a method of teaching whether in schools or universities with reference to Shakespeare's drama. Drama is both an art form as well as a highly effective teaching and learning methodology. Using drama techniques in education has great impact on grasping the scientific and literary materials to students. Based on role play, dramatization and structured play, students will enact their senses to grab the idea, which makes it easy to remember it when it is needed. The paper also examines these dramatic techniques in literature, particularly Shakespearean drama. Shakespeare had manipulated the idea of using drama techniques to teach his characters certain ideas mainly when using 'play within play' style of writing. Hence, this style added much to Shakespeare's plays enhancing their tragic and comic content along with giving a sense of enthusiasm over the audience. This paper will conduct the meaning of drama, drama/theatre in education, drama techniques in education and in Shakespeare's Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and a conclusion. It is related to axes of literature, theatre, and students. Significantly, This research highlights the fact that drama in education can be very pleasant and encouraging to students and is widely accepted by the public through referring to Shakespeare's drama. Through drama, people of all ages could gain a sense of responsibility greater than oneself. Key Words: Drama in Education, technique, role play, dramatization, structured play.

Abstract: This paper tackles the issue of using Contemporary British Theatre to express themes of Trauma and Depression dramatized in the final work of Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis. Trauma theories are tackled to understand the meaning of trauma and how to consider certain states as traumatic and/or depressive conditions. It is both a psychological and social study demonstrated by the young Kane whose final play is considered a reflection to her final days ending in dramatic suicide. The paper also examines trauma in British theatre and Sarah Kane’s personal traumatic state, trauma theories and traumatic analysis of 4.48 Psychosis. The focal worry of this paper is to bring up issues about trauma experience and its portrayal just as the capacity of theater even with extreme occasions. Significantly, this research highlights the fact that contemporary drama addresses complex issues of real life situations and that through drama, people of all ages could gain a sense of responsibility greater than oneself. Keywords: depression, trauma, British theatre, trauma theory, suicide.

Abstract

Abstract Freedom, hope and future, such are the ambitions the repressed and coerced people pant after bringing into existence. Imam Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, is a school for all generations. It is to hail how to implement right, to resist iniquity and to do justice. Starting with the self-righteous concept, this research tackles the use of metalepsis and characterization in two literary dramatic works. Metalepsis is to break the forth wall between characters and audience, so the audience would be one of the characters at the end. Metalepsis works along with characterization which is the means by which writers present and reveal characters through their speech, dress, manner, and actions. Hence using characters' names and actions to allude to historical figures is what constitutes metalepsis in live performances. Two verse drama plays are compared. One is called Al-Hussein's Voice written by Ridha Al-Khufaji and translated into English by Prof. Haider Al-Moosawi (University of Babylon), and the second is A Black Mass, written by the Afro-American playwright Amiri Baraka who converted to Islam during his youth. Al-Khufaji's play events took place in Iraq in a place between Karbala and Al-Kufa where the Umayyad Army was moving towards Al-Sham. A Friar stopped them and hoste them where leaders such as 'Amir Bin S'aad, Al-Shamir and Harmala talked about their roles in the battle until they spoke about the crisis they did against old men, women and children. Being shocked, the Friar was eager to know who those victims were. Searching for the truth, he was led to the head of Imam Hussein. The researcher compares the use of metalepsis and characterization in the search for the truth through shocking instead of entertaining the audience. The researcher seeks to spread the issue of oppression (the revolution of Imam Hussein) in Arabic literature by comparing it with the American literature (Black Race) to promote the Iraqi Husseini literature. Key Words: Al-Hussein's Voice, A Black Mass, metalepsis, characterization.

Abstract

This research tackles Shakespeare's technical and thematic dramatization of the Roman history specifically the heroic story of Julius Caesar and his assassination by the hand of his close friend Brutus. It reflects Shakespeare's talent in reflecting the Roman culture on the Elizabethan English stage, transforming, adding and altering some of the facts to suit the English culture. Simply speaking, it shows how Roman history is viewed on the stage with English flavor.
