JournalUKI TORAJA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE (UKITOICES) 2021 20 November 2021 Tor
Abstract

Linguistically marked structures could negatively affect second language learners’ proficiency. Investigating such issues, therefore, is an ever-evolving field of inquiry since they are related to processes of learning and teaching the English Language. Phrasal Verbs (PVs) are considered linguistically marked. PVs are extensively investigated from different approaches. However, there are two under-investigated variables, time of immersion in an English-speaking country, and time spent in learning English. Therefore, this paper addresses the gap of how the time variable correlated to how fluently learners of English use PVs. To achieve the intended purpose of this investigation, 27 ESL learners were surveyed measuring the role of the time variable in the frequency of PVs usage. The findings substantiate the importance of incorporating PVs in the curriculum as well as the explicit instruction of PVs.

Abstract

Abstract: The aftermath of the modern world’s ease of mobility and social networking has made it very accessible to individuals of different speech communities to learn from each other and get influenced by each other’s’ linguistic behavior. In effect, this study aims at substantiating the extent to which US college students’ linguistic behavior converge to the linguistic norms of a larger speech community. Thirty undergraduate students from Indiana State University were surveyed to achieve the intended purpose of this investigation. And the reported results show that students’ dialects do not reflect a high degree of conformity.

ESL Speakers’ Use of Hedging Expressions

AuthorsHaider Al-Mansury
JournalKufa Review
Abstract

Comparing the frequency of occurrence of hedging expressions in ESL learners’ academic writings to that of the native speakers could be of explanatory value to how pragmatically ESL learners are. To achieve this purpose, the study was conducted in two parts; the first part is a corpus-based comparison. The second part is a use-based comparison between native speakers’ of American English (NS) and ESL learners’ use of hedging devices in terms of frequency. The findings establish that ESL learners of English do not use hedging expressions as frequently as the NS do. This implies nonnative speakers of English exhibit less pragmatic competence in the written discourse.

AuthorsHaider Al-Mansury, Alaraji, A Alameedy, D.
JournalLaboratory Phonetics and Phonology
Abstract

The research investigates the effect of utilizing Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology in enhancing students’ pronunciation of English at Kufa University – Faculty of Education. To accomplish the purpose of the study, a pre-test was given to determine a baseline for the students’ pronunciation. The participants of the study were 16 second grade students on their second semester of the academic year 2017-2018. The study subjects were divided into two groups, experimental and control. The experimental group was trained to pronounce selected probe words using ASR while the control group was coached to pronounce the same probe words by a teacher of phonetics. The data were analyzed by calculating the number of mistakes committed by subjects on both the pre and post-tests. The results indicate that there is statistically considerable variances in the post-test between the control and the experimental groups, favoring the experimental group.
