Abstract
Puerperal infection is a danger that can happen after childbirth, it may receive less attention than
during pregnancy and childbirth. Primigravida women become unaware of their health at delivery
time, this leads to a large number of negative consequences due to a lack of knowledge of
preventive measures. The study aimed to assess the knowledge of primigravida women about
puerperal infections. A descriptive cross-sectional study is carried out in six Primary Health Centers
in Al Najaf city during the period from (24th October 2021 to May 22nd, 2022), non-probability (A
purposive sample) of 50 primigravida women participants in this study. The data are collected
through the use of questionnaire format through a face-to-face interview. The study result includes
(46%) of the study participants were within the age group (20-24) years, and (34%) of them had an
institute or above certificate. The majority of them, (84%) live in urban; and more than half they’re
a monthly income that is sufficient to some extent (68%). The majority of them (88%) were
housewives; Most of the study participants (76%) lived with extended families and the majority of
them (88%) with normal BMI levels, and there is a significant association between women’s
knowledge and age, educational status, residence, and occupational status. The study concluded that
most of the study participants had a moderate level of knowledge regarding puerperal infections. It
also reveals that the age, educational status, residence, and occupational status of the study
participants were found statistically significant with knowledge about puerperal infections. The
study recommended applying an instructional program to raise awareness of the postpartum period
and promote healthy practices for women.
