Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is described as a shift in the balance of the vaginal microflora characterized by an
increase in the vaginal pH, a reduction in lactobacilli, predominantly hydrogen peroxide producing species, and an increase in
number and/or type of facultative and anaerobic bacteria, vaginal infection is frequently the cause of distress and discomfort
in adult women. The present study was aimed to investigate the distribution of Gardnerella vaginalis among women suffering
from BV. Methods: A total of 76 secretion swabs have been collected from high vaginal and endocervical canal of women
suffering from vaginosis and 10 secretion swabs from healthy women. Samples were collected from specialized medical
clinics during the period from April 2018 to July 2018 in Najaf – Manathrah district. BV was characterized according to
Amsel criteria, while polymerase chain reaction technique was carried for detection of bacteria associated with BV using
16SrRNA gene for molecular identification of G. vaginalis. Results: Molecular detection of bacteria associated with BV
showed that G. vaginalis was detected in 63% and 71% of high vaginal swab and endocervical swab of women with BV,
respectively, in comparison with healthy women which was 20%, by appearance of amplicon with molecular size 301 bp.
A wide distribution of G. vaginalis (detected in high vaginal swab) among the age group 15–25-year-old compared with
those detected in endocervical, which shows a high percentage of detection among age group 26–36 years old. Significant
differences have been observed between G. vaginalis and age group at P < 0.05. Furthermore, G. vaginalis was detected in
a high percent (13% from high vaginal swab and 26.3% from endocervical swab) from women suffered from one case of
abortion. Conclusion: A correlation has been founded between prevalence of G. vaginalis and age group with occurrence of
BV that lead to abortion.
