The current study was conducted at the College of Education for Girls/ department of Biology/ animal house. Fifty male
albino rats belonging to the strain Sprague Dawley, species Rattus rattus, were used. They weighed 180-228 g, and were
divided into 7 groups, 5 males in each group. The first included control group that was orally dosed with a solution of
physiological salt 0.9% NaCl. The second group was injected subcutaneously with alloxan 120 mg/kg. The third and fourth
groups were orally administrated with astaxanthin extract at the two concentrations 250 and 500 mg/kg respectively. The
fifth and sixth groups were injected with alloxan 120 mg/kg, then was orally subjected to astaxanthin extract 250 and 500
mg/kg respectively. The last group was orally given amaryl solution 0.1 mg/kg after being injected with alloxan 120 mg/kg.
It is worth mentioning that the dosage process lasted for 30 days, once per day. The study comprised a biochemical
parameters recording of male rats such as levels of blood total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein
(HDL) and low-density and very low-density lipoprotein (LDL, VLDL), in addition to reduced glutathione (GSH),
glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPX-1), and malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as the activity of the liver enzymes as the
aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), the alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and finally urea and
creatinine levels. Regarding levels of serum TC, TG, LDL, VLDL, MDA, and the liver enzymes activity of AST, ALT and
ALP, in addition to levels of urea and creatinine, a significant increase was noticed (P˂ 0.05) at the treated group with
alloxan and the group of alloxan + amaryl in compared to the control group and other experimental groups. On the
contrary, the levels of HDL, GSH and GPX1 revealed significant decrease in the same two groups. There were a significant
decline (P˂ 0.05) in levels of serum TC, TG and LDL, VLDL, MDA, and the liver enzymes activity of AST, ALT and
ALP, in addition to urea and creatinine levels comparable to the control group and other residual groups. While, the levels
of HDL and GSH and GPX1 showed a significant elevation (P˂ 0.05) in the group that treated with astaxanthin when
compared with the control group and other groups of study. It was concluded that the therapeutic effects of astaxanthin
extract in two concentrations 250 and 500 mg/ kg is better than the chemical drug (amaryl) in ameliorating the biochemical
parameters of blood, due to the efficacy of the powerful anti-oxidative components found in astaxanthin which reduces or
alleviates the hemotoxic impacts caused by alloxan .
