This study aims to explain the tectonics interpretation for the plateau of Najaf-Karbala and the basis of
its lifting depends on the analysis of remote sensing tools and interpretation of geophysical data
(seismic reflection sections). The result of the data showed that there was a difference in the direction of
the lineaments. The diversity in the lineaments trends indicates that the area exposed to more than one
stress system. The region subjected to extension resulting from subduction of the Arabian plate under
Eurasian plates due to the movement of this plate towards the northeast. The extension led to normal
faults in the region and the depositional basin in the study area. A changing in the direction of forces
and greatest principal stress (σ1) were affected the area due to the influence of collision between
Arabian and Eurasian plates. The change in the direction of forces caused an inversion in the direction
of movement along the old normal faults in the study area. The seismic sections indicated the existence
of inversion in movement after the end of the deposition of the Dibdibba formation specifically during
the closure of the Neotethys in the period of Miocene-Pliocene sequence. The normal faults showed a
clear effect as a result of the inversion, which gave an indication of the mechanism of the uplift that
occurred in the plateau.
