Abstract :
The present study focuses on the notion of presupposition as a pragmatic tool to unveil the issue
of racism in David Edgar's "Destiny". Since it is a negative issue; racism lends itself to critical
studies. Therefore, the field of investigation is Critical Pragmatics which focuses on how the
pragmatic theories investigate the reflection of an illegitimate issues in language particularly
when aspects of power, ideology, and dominance are highlighted. The study aims at identifying
how does the notion of presupposition impart the issue of racism; pinpointing the basic types and
triggers of presupposition which are utilized in the selected data. In order to achieve the aims of
this study, Levinson‘s (1983) presupposition triggers and Yule‘s (1996) types of presupposition
are adopted as the model of the study. After analyzing the data, it has been found that the writer
has been used all types of presupposition with their various triggers, particularly the existential,
lexical, and structural presuppositions in order to convey the negative consequences of racism.
