This study investigates the role of inserting tungsten metal (W) on the catalytic activity of trimetallic W-Mo-Co supported on Gamma-Alumina (γ-Al2O3) heterogeneous catalyst used for a hydrodesulphurization (HDS) in the oil refinery. A bimetallic Co5Mo15/γ-Al2O3 and a trimetallic Co5Mo14W1/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized by an incipient wetness impregnation. The synthesized trimetallic Co5Mo14W1/γ-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited a better catalytic performance of 88 % hydro-removal percentage of sulfur through the HDS reaction of petroleum naphtha compared to 82 % for the bimetallic 5Co-15Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst following the same operation conditions of pressure 11.5 bar, temperature 598°K and reaction time of 3 hr. The enhanced catalyst's activity is attributed to the presence of tungsten metal that contributed in increasing the metal sites on the catalyst's reaction surface.
