Introduction. Cancer is linked to a hypercoagulable state, resulting in a four-fold increase
in the risk of thrombosis, along with an elevated risk of bleeding. Patients with cancer
who receive chemotherapy, thromboembolism is considered the second leading cause of
mortality. Malignancy is linked to a higher risk for both thromboembolic and hemorrhagic
problems.
Purpose. To assess the present practice in the prevention of venous thromboembolism in
hospitalized cancer patients.
Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study, it involved 70 patients and was
conducted at the National Teaching Hospital for Oncology in Najaf Governorate, and the
monitoring was conducted during the period from September 15 to February 15 and this
study revealed that the type of anticoagulant that administered for hospitalize patient
with cancer is enoxaparin according to Padua score.
Results. The study included 70 participants, predominantly aged 57–70 years (48.6%),
with a greater number of females (57.1%) than males (42.9%). Most participants had a
weight exceeding 70 kg (67.1%).
Conclusion. The study reveals that Enoxaparin is the preferred anticoagulant for
hospitalized cancer patients, as it is effective and prevents bleeding, making it the
preferred treatment due to the risk of thrombosis.
