The study dealt with an essential aspect of sustainable development: water. Because of the great importance of knowing the change in water quantities during specific periods, the study resorted to using remote sensing techniques and analyzing multispectral images from the Landsat satellite for 1985, 1993, 2003, 2014 and 2023, and revealing the percentage of change in the water body of the Euphrates River passing through the eastern region of the city of Kufa in the middle of the Najaf Governorate, using the land use and land cover method (LULC) and this was done after classifying the images used using the maximum likelihood classification method, the image was divided into four classes: urban lands, agricultural lands, barren lands, and the water body. Based on the graphical analysis of the changes that occurred in these four classes and using the Curve Fitting method, a regression equation was created, which was used to predict the quantities of the water body available and the land cover surrounding it, for the next ten years up to the year 2033 and based on the extracted results, the study concluded a significant decrease in the water body of the Euphrates River and the agricultural lands surrounding it, with a noticeable increase in urban and barren areas, The study recommended paying attention to sustainable sources of water, such as rainwater and others, and correctly investing them, taking into account the social and economic reasons that directly affected the quantities of river water.
