This study was conducted at the poultry farm, College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad, and began at 25/1/1983 and till 20/3/1983.The aim was to replace local Barley (six Rows) and Sorghum (Kafir) instate of yellow dent corn (maize).
The nutritional periods were two as follows:
1- Starter period :Contained 23% protein and 3100 Kcal ME/Kg diet, and was fed for period of four (4) weeks.
2- Finisher period : Contained 20% protein and 3200 Kcal ME/Kg diet, and was fed for period of second four (4) weeks.
The diets used were composed of cereal grain formulated as follows :
1- 57.5% yellow dent corn ( control diet ).
2- 57.5% local Sorghum (Kafir ) .
3- 53.0% local Barley ( six Rows ).
4- 18.5% for each corn , Barley , Sorghum.
5- 37.0% Corn + 18.5% Barley .
6- 37.0% Sorghum + 18.5% Barley .
7- 18.5% Corn + 36.0% Barley .
8- 18.5% Sorghum + 36.0% Barley .
9- 39.0% Corn + 18.5% Sorghum .
10- 18.5% Corn + 39.0% Sorghum.
The following criteria were evaluated Body weight . Feed consumption , Feed conversion ,Chemical meat composition , Dressing percentage ,Mortality rate and production costs. Six hundreds (600) day old Euribrid broiler chicks were assigned randomly over ten (10) treatments , each treatment contained two replicates . The experimental design was Randomized Completely Block (R.C.B.D ).
The results showed that no significant differences among body weight at two (2) , four (4) , six(6) , eight (8) weeks, body weights averaged ( 340.0 ,270.0 ,297.5 ,317.5 , 305.0 , 309.0 ,290.0 ,300.0 ,301.5 , 271.0 ,gm.) and ( 862.5 , 800.0 , 745.0 , 782.5 , 832.5 , 830.0, 740.0 , 787.0 , 785.0 , 757.5 gm ) ( 1498.0 , 1364.0 , 1443.0 , 1476.0 , 1446.5 ,1481.5 ,1396.5 , 1501.5 , 1482.5 , 1332.0 ,gm ) and ( 2318.0 , 2063.0 , 2091.5 , 2141.5 ,2158.5 , 2033.0 , 1941.0 , 2183.0 , 2204.5 , 2001.5 gm ) for treatment from one to ten respectively . There were significant ( p≤ 0.05 ) differences among weight gain at (4 – 8 ) weeks of age , weight gain average ( 1455.0 , 1263.0 , 1346.0 , 1359.0 , 1362.0 , 1203.0 , 1201.0 , 1395.0 , 1419.0 , 1244.0 gm ) for treatments from one to ten respectively .Statistical analysis of feed conversion did not show significant differences at two (2) , Four (4) ,Six(6) , Eight (8( ,the average of these values were ( 1.09 , 1.20 , 1.28 , 1.24 , 1.21 , 1.24 , 1.22 , 1.22 , 1.20 , 1.19 ) and ( 1.46 , 1.55 , 1.66 , 1.59 , 1.57 , 1.59 , 1.64 , 1.58 , 1.60 , 1.60 , 1./62 ) and ( 1,.70 , 1.74 , 1.99 , 1.91 , 1.80 , 1.73 , 2.14 , 1.84 , 1.84 , 1.83 , 1.85 ) and ( 1.99 , 2.07 , 2.34 , 2.21 , 2.18 , 2.20 , 2.56 , 2.19 , 2.16 , 2.20 ) foe all treatments respectively , this was true for feed consumption , Dressing percentage , Mortality rate followed the same pattern of Body weight. The ration which number eight (8) the cheapest cost and had the highest Return of Dinars ( 641 Fills/kg live weight) , whereas ration which number seven (7) produced the lowest Return of Dinars ( 484 fills/kg live weight at six (6) weeks old chicks respectively .
In general feeding chicks on all diets for six weeks was cheaper than feeding for eight weeks on same diets, this due to additional cost would get higher when time and services of the extra two weeks are considered , also the return of dinars were higher when we marked the chicks as meat compared as live weight at eight weeks for all treatments .
