This study was planned to assess the efficacy of bovine urinary bladder matrix (UBM) in acceleration and enhancement of tendon healing, after experimentally induced-tendonitis, via tendon tearing of superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT). This study was carried out on 12 adult healthy donkeys, which were divided randomly into two equal groups (six animals/group). Under the effect of tranquilizer and general anesthesia, a 3cmX0.3mm longitudinal intratendenous tearing and depth of 0.2mm, was induced in the middle third of SDFT at the metacarpal region of right forelimb, by a partial removal of tendon tissue and made of grove within the tendon core. In treatment group, a decellularized and disinfected scaffold as a strip of 3cmX0.3cm with depth of 0.2mm, which was prepared from the whole fresh bovine urinary bladders of slaughtered cows at the local abattoir as a urinary bladder extracellular matrix (UBM-ECM), was firmly embedded within the grove of the tendon. The same procedure of treatment group was repeated in the control group with exception of injection of 3ml sterile normal saline.
