Abstract

Research has been done on the naturally occurring radioactivity of the earth formations in the soil of the Kufa city, in the governorate of Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf. Currently, it consists of the historic city's core, the northern and southern portions, to calculate the level of radioactivity present and the degree to which it affects the local population these areas using gamma-ray spectroscopy NaI(Tl) (3"×3"), spectral measurements were obtained by choosing 30 sites for soil samples from the area. The specific activity of 232Th, 40K, and 238U in the investigated ranges between (28.402±1.015) Bq/kg in old city to (5.076±0.368) Bq/kg in south part with average (10.634) Bq/kg to (9.391) Bq/kg , (27.431±0.982) Bq/kg in north part to (5.019±0.415) Bq/kg in south part with average (18.785) Bq/kg to (18.078) Bq/kg, (380.580±3.725) Bq/kg in south part to (103.455±1.982) Bq/kg in old city with average (332.235) Bq/kg to (245.153) Bq/kg. As per radium equivalent, it was between (74.771) Bq/kg in south part to (34.200) Bq/kg in old city with average (60.825) Bq/kg to(49.551) Bq/kg , the external hazard index, however, varied from (0.201) in south part Bq/kg to (0.092) Bq/kg in old city with average (0.164) Bq/kg to (0.133) Bq/kg moreover, the activity concentration index varied from ( 0.568) Bq/kg in south part to (0.263) Bq/kg in old city with average (0.464) Bq/kg to (0.374) Bq/kg. The radiation levels of the investigated samples were found to be within allowable limits when the current results were compared with the values that are taken into consideration internationally

Abstract

The natural radioactivity of the earth formations of the Soil of the kufa city in Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf governorate has been studied. The city of Kufa is considered one of the sacred historical cities. Its founding dates back to the year 638 AD. Its area is estimated at approximately (49,689 km2). It currently consists of the northern and southern parts, the center of the old city, Maysan neighborhood, Al-Suhailia, and Al-Barakiya. The area of Maysan, Al-Suhailia, and Al-Barakiya was studied due to its close to the cement factory in Kufa. To calculate the level of radioactivity present and the degree to which it affects the local population these areas by selecting 30 sites to take soil samples from the region, and spectral measurements were made using gamma-ray spectroscopy (NaI(Tl)) ( 3"×3" ). It was found that the specific activity of 238U, 232Th and 40K in the studied ranged between (34.279±1.059) Bq/kg in Maysan neighborhood to (3.423±0.353) Bq/kg in Al-Barakiya with average (16.450) Bq/kg to (8.274) Bq/kg , (21.549±0.864) Bq/kg in Al-Barakiya to (5.050±0.405) Bq/kg in Maysan neighborhood with average (14.105 ) Bq/kg to (13.260) and (433. 948±3.939 ) Bq/kg in Maysan neighborhood to (92.328±1.843) Bq/kg in Al-Barakiya with average ( 338.251) Bq/kg to (245.754) Bq/kg. As The value of the excess lifetime cancer risk (total) it was between (0.802) in Maysan neighborhood to (0.393) in Al-Barakiya with average (0.627) to (0.478). After comparing the current findings with the values taken into account generally, it was found that the radiation levels in the examined samples are within allowable bounds.

As for the value of the annual effective dose (total) it was it was between (0.214) mSv/y in south part part to (0.100) mSv/y in old city with average (0.214) mSv/y g to(0.100) mSv/y, The radiation levels of the investigated samples were found to be within allowable limits when the current results were compared with the values that are taken into consideration internationally.
