Study of the seasonal changes of rotifera in : Al-Razzaza lake

AuthorsAnam A.Tsear
Journal AIP Conference Proceedings
Abstract

This study aimed to find out the seasonal changes of the Rotifera community in Al-Razzaza lake. Monthly samples were collected from four sites at Razzaza lake during April 2019 to March 2020 using a plankton net with a mesh- size of 55µm. The results showed that the Rotifera were consisting of fifteen genera. Highest densities of Rotifera were recorded during Spring and predominant species was Hexarthra mira. The total number of Rotifera ranged between 93 ind/m3 in Summer and 1873 ind/m3 in Spring 2020.

Abstract

The current study aims to assess zooplankton diversity in Bahr Al-Najaf depression using diversity index, specimens were collected from five sites at Bahr Al-Najaf depression, Iraq during April 2017 to March 2018. Forty-eight taxa of zooplankton were identified including 26 taxa to Copepoda, 17 taxa belonged to Rotifers and 5 taxa to Cladocera: Copepoda was the most dominant group (54.2%); Rotifera comprised (35.4%); Cladocera comprised (10.4%). Relative abundance index of zooplankton showed Copepodite and nauplii of Harpacticoid, Hexarthra mira, Daphnia sp., Harpacticoid sp., and Copepodite and nauplii of Cyclops were more abundant. According to the constancy index, the Copepodite and nauplii of Harpacticoid, nauplii Cyclops, nauplii stage and Hexarthra mira can be considered as the most frequent; Shanon-Weiner diversity index values of zooplankton recorded less value 0.48 in August 2017 at site (5); while the higher value was recorded in April 2017 at site (2) was 2.42; the higher value of species richness index was recorded in April 2017 at site (2) which was (7.2), the higher value of species uniformity index was recorded in February at site (2) and March at site (1) (0.61). The present study concluded that Copepoda was the most abundant of zooplankton with variations in zooplankton species (density and from month to another).

Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate some physical and chemical parameters such as (water temperature, pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, total hardness, calcium and magnesium hardness, and sulfate ions) and the concentrations of some heavy metals such as (Zinc, Lead, Cadmium, Manganese and Iron) in water of Bahr Al- Najaf. Five sites were chosen in Bahr Al- Najaf; the samples were monthly collected from April 2017 to March 2018. The results showed that water temperature ranged between (12.3-37.8) C0 , pH values (7.16 -8.88), electrical conductivity (EC)(3.8-77.8) ms/cm, salinity (2.43- 49.79) ppt turbidity (Tur) (7.16 -45.5) NTU, total dissolved solids(TDS)( 2476-32366) mg/l, total hardness (TH) ( 553.18 - 2073 )mg/l, calcium(Ca+2) and magnesium (Mg+2)ions (122.91-689.37) and (80.29-609.21) mg/L respectively, sulfate ions (SO4 ) -2(360.9 -1263.1)mg/l, dissolved oxygen (DO) (6.6 - 17.8) mg/l, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5 ) ( 0.73- 12.77) mg/l. The study results of heavy metals concentrations in water showed that Zinc (Zn) ranged between (0.001-13.86) ppm, lead (Pb) (0.02- 1.87 ) ppm, cadmium (Cd) ( 0.001-3.33) ppm, manganese (Mn) ( 0.006-0.23) ppm, iron (Fe) ( 0.03-0.91) ppm. The water quality of Bahr Al- Najaf depression under this study was considered of salinity, slightly alkaline, very hard and concentrations of BOD5 were recorded in some months exceeding the permissible limit. It seems clearly that Bahr Al-Najaf depression was contaminated by domestic sewage. Increasing levels of heavy metals in Bahr Al-Najaf depression exceeded the permissible limit, giving a hint of water pollution by heavy metals. Key words : Physicochemical, parameters, heavy metals, Bahr, Al-Najaf.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to use the Atriplex nummularia for hyperaccumulators of silver after extraction from the soil by the plant. The concentration of silver Ag in different organs of plants and in two soils was examined in Najaf, Iraq, in 2017. The results showed that desert soils had the highest mineral concentration. The bioaccumulation of the metal was in the order of leaf> soil> root. Average (soil to root transport factor) TF (Rt / SE) in desert soil and average (above ground to underground transport factor) TF (AG / BG) for more than one silver. In the present study, the concentration of silver in desert soils is about 23 times higher than the global concentration. The concentration of silver in the plant leaves about 46.69 ppm higher than the concentration in the desert soil with an increase of about 93.38% over the global concentration. The concentration of silver in plant growing in agricultural soil was 9.83 ppm. This means an increase of about 20% above the global concentration in plants. The transition factor and the positive linear relationship between the concentrations of silver in the soil and the leaves indicate that the Atriplex nummularia plant is able to accumulate silver in their leaves and this indicates the ability of the plant to extract silver because it is hyperaccumulators of silver

The University of Kufa officially joins the Magna Carta Observatory for International Universities

The head of the Makna Carta Observatory, Dr. Spault Norada, announced that the University of Kufa has joined the observatory, which includes more than 900 universities from different countries of the world, stressing that the official signing of the joining will be next year at the Italian University of Bologna during the Bologna Process Conference, and then the University of Kufa will be the ambassador of the observatory in Iraq. That was during the conference held by the Magna Carta gathering entitled “Freedoms and Responsibilities of Universities and Their Dealing with Future Challenges” held at the Canadian McMaster University to discuss academic freedom and the responsibilities that universities bear in helping to achieve the United Nations sustainable development goals. It is reported that the University of Kufa has worked for more than From a year to complete the requirements to join this academic grouping, the independent academic observatory pledges to work with universities to ensure the integrity of intellectual and scientific work in universities and society, in a way that enhances trust between universities and their societies, whether they are local, regional, national or global.

The University of Kufa holds a symposium on reducing emissions and optimal use of clean energy

The Department of Media and Public Relations at the University of Kufa held a symposium entitled “Reducing emissions and optimal use of clean energy”, aimed at spreading environmental awareness among university circles by moving towards clean energy and reducing emissions that would increase environmental pollution. University President Prof. Dr. Yasser Lafta Hassoun said, "Iraq is among the countries most affected by climate change and water scarcity in the coming years, which casts a shadow over all sectors, including the agricultural sector, and called for the disposal of waste through the establishment of waste recycling plants, similar to other countries." The symposium included three lectures, the first for the instructor at the College of Science, Dr. Muhammad Al-Haidari, entitled “Energy Support and Reducing Emissions”, the second for the Teaching in the College of Engineering, Dr. Ali Wadi Abbas, entitled “Clean Energy and Ways to Support It” and the third for the Teaching at the Faculty of Arts, Halim Al-Azzam, entitled “The Role of the Media in Spreading Awareness” The symposium concluded that it is necessary to urge professors, teachers and students of the outgoing stages to address clean energy in their research and messages and to demand the transfer of industrial plants from residential cities to desert areas and to move towards the use of solar and nuclear energy in generating electric power instead of gas-powered plants.
