Speech Acts in Virtual Assistants: A Comparative Study of Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant

Date2025-11-04
Abstract

Virtual helpers like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant are now a big part of everyday life. They do things by listening to your words and responding to normal language. Even though these systems are getting better at recognizing speech and making responses, one important area that needs more research is how they can understand and make meaningful speech acts. This paper uses speech act theory to look at how well these helpers can recognize and carry out different kinds of illocutionary acts, such as spokespeople, orders, and commissives. The study looks at Austin's and Searle's basic theories to compare how each helper handles and reacts to different practical tasks. This study uses planned trials with 60 speech act-based questions from real-life usage situations to test the helpers' ability to keep pragmatic consistency, figure out the goal, and give the right context. They show that the processes are not at all the same. When it comes to giving information and directions, Google Assistant is the best. When it comes to action-based orders, Alexa is the best. Siri is good at giving answers that show how you feel, but it's not great at acts that aren't clear or straight. They show how important pragmatic analysis is for judging AI conversation and give us thoughts on how to improve natural language tools. By combining language theory with real-world AI testing, this study adds to the fields of human-computer interaction, AI pragmatics, and discourse technology.

Abstract

The study delves into speaking anxiety among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, exploring the hurdles faced in their speaking abilities. With a focus on the factors influencing speaking performance, the research investigates the impact of anxiety on effective communication in English language classes. Conducted at the Department of English for Girls, University of Kufa, the investigation aims to identify speaking Anxiety as a pivotal determinant shaping learners' attitudes in English language classes. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research administered a closed-ended questionnaire in paper format to students. The questionnaire, designed to elicit responses through predefined options where participants indicated their choices by ticking designated columns, examined various aspects influencing speaking performance and evaluated the effectiveness of strategies in enhancing English proficiency among EFL students. The findings reveal the presence of anxiety factors within the classroom environment, stemming from reasons such as students' lack of confidence, fear of verbal errors, and reluctance to communicate proficiently in English. Moreover, the study highlights EFL learners' communication challenges in English language classes. Moreover, the present study explored the construct of speaking-in-class AnxietyAnxiety of KUFA EFL undergraduate students. It aimed to identify speaking anxiety as an essential factor in learners' attitudes towards English. It also tried more specifically to find out the situations that provoked fear.

Abstract

Learning a new language has always been challenging in today's world. So many people achieve this goal in various ways. This research will discuss some ways to lead to a more successful outcome. It will be discussed that although the role of teachers is unquestionably decisive in this regard, some other features like motivation, enthusiasm, and knowing about the target culture are essential in successful learning, too. Bruce and Hogan (1998) note that as technology becomes the usual and expected method of instruction and communication, significant shifts in expectations about the skills students must master to be successful language users take place. English language teachers should pay close attention to the skills that native English speakers need. Finally, some difficulties and challenges the learners may face while acquiring another language will also be referred to.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 crisis, the shift to remote instruction prompted students to engage in face-to-face, blended, and online learning modalities. This study aims to investigate students' learning perceptions and preferences among the styles above. Employing a quantitative research methodology, the study involved 50 participants from the College of Education for Girls. Results indicate a strong preference for traditional face-to-face learning, followed by blended Learning. Notably, the least favored approach was online Learning. This study aims to elucidate the perspectives of students navigating two distinct educational paradigms necessitated by the global pandemic juxtaposed against traditional face-to-face instruction. The objective is to delineate insights that can inform the development of pedagogical frameworks aligned with optimal teaching and learning practices. By discerning students' viewpoints and preferences, synthesizing guidelines from their feedback and educators' experiences, and formulating a tailored instructional model attuned to students' requirements, the endeavor seeks to enhance the efficacy of the teaching and learning process.

The Proficiency Provided by Artificial Intelligence in Learning Arabic and English Languages, Especially in Translation

The English Language Department, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the college, organized a workshop titled "Translation between Arabic and English in Artificial Intelligence: Professionalism and Proficiency" to introduce English language students to the future of translation between Arabic and English, as well as vice versa, in artificial intelligence applications. The workshop addressed various questions about the differences in meaning and style in translation, and the ability of artificial intelligence to overcome these obstacles and attempt to simulate the original language in spirit, meaning, and pronunciation during translation. The cognitive revolution in the mid-20th century brought a significant shift in various aspects of human development. Given the cognitive data in machine language, it has become necessary to computerize the Arabic language as a means of transferring knowledge and aligning it with modern communication means in artificial intelligence algorithms to help individuals overcome communication and learning challenges. Therefore, researchers in the field of artificial intelligence have sought to understand human perception and attempted to simulate it by developing computer systems that deal with different language levels. However, using machine learning in pattern recognition for processing the Arabic language faces challenges such as software weaknesses in containing synonyms and their features in readable and audible sentences. Hence, a descriptive and analytical study was conducted on the status of the Arabic language in relation to artificial intelligence and computing, and its utilization of technological advancements. The research also explored possible perspectives that could contribute to solving its problems and challenges. .
