Abstract

Objective: to contribute in the development of speech audiometry (speech reception threshold test) in Iraqi Arabic-speaking adults. Methods: The study population included seventy normal persons aged 40-65 years (40 males and 30 females), they randomly recruited from the department of otolaryngology/ENT-clinic in Al-Sader Medical City in Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf government through a period which extends from December 2019 to May 2020 that divided into two equal groups. In both groups calculate pure tone average (PTA) and determine speech reception thresholds SRT monaurally by using bisyllable Ratcliff’s words in first group and Arabic spondee words used in Zagazig University Hospitals in Egypt for second group through monitored live voice (MLV) speech test.

Abstract

Abstract Objective: to contribute in the development of speech audiometric test in Iraq by using Arabic-Iraqi dialect for measuring word recognition score (WRS). Methods: sixty normal persons aged 40-65 years (30 males and 30 females) divided into six equal groups. After determining hearing thresholds (PTA) determine WRS , each list of 25 words to one group, monaurally in the better ear at several intensities through speech audiometer by using monosyllable Alusi’s words lists through monitored live voice (MLV).

Acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis

Abstract

Abstract Acupuncture is a portion of traditional Chinese medicine and has been used for Health care over 3,000 years in China. A migraine is a relatively common medical condition that can severely affect the quality of life of the sufferer and his or her family. Migraine is ranked by the World Health Organization as the 19th disease world-wide to cause disability; epidemiological studies of headache in Asia reported consistent findings that the prevalence ranged from 8.4% to 12.7%. Objective: To assess the efficacy of acupuncture in migraine prophylaxis. Patients and method: This study was carried out on 40 known case of migraineurs from both genders, aged 20-50 years. Migraineurs were randomly divided into 2 groups, 20 cases in each group, first group (control group) received medical treatment i.e. propranolol 40mg tid while 2nd group (acupuncture group) received 15 sessions of real acupuncture for 12 weeks, These forty migraineurs were treated in Emam Reza Hospital in Mashhad city in Iran and in private clinic of Dr. Mojtabavi over a period from December 2011 till March 2012. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS in which independent t-test was used to compute significance. Result: There were significant differences between the acupuncture and control groups throughout the treatment periods on numbers of attacks and intensity of pain i.e. there is significant decrease, in numbers of migraine attacks and intensity of pain, more in patients treated with acupuncture than those treated with the medical therapy (propranolol). Conclusion: acupuncture is more effective, in reducing the frequency of attacks and intensity of the pain, than medical treatment for migraine prophylaxis.

Abstract

Abstract Traditional Chinese Acupuncture has a history of over 3,000 years. The World Health Organization recommends the use of acupuncture treatment for many diseases including headaches, migraine, low back pain, sciatica and others. The prevalence of sciatica is about 3% - 5%, and equally common in men and women. In most patients, the prognosis is good, but up to 30% will have pain for one year or longer Objective:To prove that acupuncture is effective in treating sciatica.Patients and method:This study was carried out on 18 cases of chronic sciatica from both genders, aged 30-60 years. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups, 9 cases in each group, 1st group received acupuncture treatment while 2nd group received conventional medical treatment like NSAID as diclofenac and muscle relaxant as baclofen in addition to acupuncture, in both groups patients received 10 sessions of real acupuncture for 4 weeks, Those 18 patients were treated in Emam Reza Hospital in Mashhad city in Iran and in private clinic of Dr. Mojtabavi over a period from February 2012 till May 2012. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS in which independent t-test was used to compute significance.Result: on comparing the effect of treatment in both groups separately i.e. before and after therapy, show there is significant decrease in the intensity of pain in both groups. But on comparing the effect of treatment between groups found there is no significant difference between them. Conclusion: acupuncture is effective, in reducing the intensity of the pain, for sciatica. Recommendation: acupuncture can be used to treat, as least painful symptoms of, sciatica.

Abstract

Abstract:This study was carried out on 21 normal healthy male volunteers, aged 20-40 years inorder to study cardiovascular reflexes response to postural changes at rest and duringexercise by using non-invasive technique. Bicycle ergo-meter for doing exercise, mercurysphygmomanometer for measuring the blood pressure(BP) and Dopplerechocardiography for estimating of heart rate(HR), stroke volume(SV), cardiacoutput(CO), velocity time integral(VTI), ejection time(ET), peak or maximum flowvelocity through aortic valve(Vmx) and maximum pressure gradient across aorticvalve(PGmx). The results were at rest there are significant increase in HR, diastolic BP,mean BP, peripheral vascular resistance(PVR) and significant decrease in SV, CO, VTI,ET in upright position on comparison with the supine position, while systolic BP, Vmx,PGmx are not significantly different between both positions at rest.During change from rest to exercise all variables significantly changed in bothpositions except ET during upright exercise which is not significantly decreased. On comparison between supine and upright exercise it was found that there aresignificantly higher HR, systolic BP, PVR and significantly lower SV, CO, VTI inupright exercise in comparison with supine exercise, while diastolic BP, mean BP, ET,Vmx, PGmx are not significantly different between supine and upright exercise. On comparison between the differences in both positions in response to exercise it wasfound that there are significantly higher HR, systolic BP, PVR and significantly lowerCO, diastolic BP, ET in upright position on comparison with the supine position, whilemean BP, VTI, Vmx, PGmx not significantly changed. We concluded that there is inverse relationship between HR and ET and directrelationship between VTI and Vmx.
