ABSTRACT Background: Autism spectrum disorder is an enduring neuro-developmental disorder categorized by qualitative irregularities in mutual social communications. The analyses of dental caries incidence in monozygotic and dizygotic twins indicate a large number of different genes contributions. The human leukocyte antigens play a major role in immune response of an individual. This study aimed to estimate human leukocyte antigen class II genotype (DQ and DR) in relation to dental caries severity among institutionalized autistic adolescents. Materials and Methods: Two groups were included in this study, first group had 40 institutionalized autistic adolescents and second consisted of 40 apparently healthy school adolescents control group with age range (12 years-15 years old, only males) selected with regard to dental caries severity. Each group subdivided into two groups: high caries group (20 adolescents, DMFT ≥ 6 caries) and free group (20 adolescents, DMFT=0)). The amplification of the selected human leukocyte antigen alleles (DQ2, DQ4, DQ5, DQ6 and DR4) was carried out by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers, the products of were electrophoresed and analysed in agarose gel. The data of current study was analysed using SPSS version 21. Results: The percentage of human leukocyte antigen -DQ2 and -DQ6 were higher in study group than control group with significant difference. Within study group, human leukocyte antigen -DQ2, -DQ6 and DR4 were higher in caries free subgroup than high caries subgroup with statistical significant difference regarding human leukocyte antigen -DQ2. Conclusion: Human leukocyte antigen -DQ2, -DQ6 were more presented in autistic group. Human leukocyte antigen -DQ2, - DQ6 and DR4 were related to low level of caries activity in autistic adolescents.

ABSTRACT Dental trauma has a great impact on quality of life, affecting children physically, esthetically and psychologically. This study aimed to assess the Dental trauma in relation to malocclusion amongst primary school children within Najaf city, Iraq. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 3176 children attending 12 primary schools in Najaf city. Cluster sampling methodology was used for selection of subjects, where each school formed a cluster. All students aged 7-12 years were examined in accordance with the Ellis and Davey classification of traumatic injuries to anterior teeth and grouped according to incisors relationship to three groups CI I, CI II & CI III. Statistical inspection was done by Chi-Square test. Among the 3176 (M=1653, F=1523) examined, found Cl I 57.9 % (1842), Cl II 32.02 % (1017) & Cl III 9.98 % (317), the prevalence of traumatic injury to anterior teeth was 7.93% (252). Of those 252 patients, 64.29% (162) were boys and 35.71% (90) were girls with male/female ratio approximately 2:1. The trauma according to incisor classification was Cl I 25 % (63), Cl II 69.84 % (176) & Cl III 5.16 (13) .The uppermost percentage of tooth injuries arise amongst 9-10 years old children. Sole tooth injury was found in 79.6% of the cases, 18.5% had two teeth injury, and 1.9% had more than two teeth injury. The most commonly affected teeth were maxillary central incisors (70.1%). Fall (52.3%) was the most common cause for traumatized dental injuries. Most common type of fractures was class II (49.3%) and class III (33.8) and most of them were untreated (95.2%). Traumatized dental injury is an existent dental poser and emphasis should be given in school dental healthiness programs on deterrent aspects of traumatized dental injuries especially CI II incisor relationship. ABSTRACT Background: The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) describes a wide range of symptoms, including difficulty with social interaction and communication skills. Controversial thinking about oral health of children with ASD, in general may have a lower hygiene level than healthy individuals, low caries rate and high body weight in comparison to healthy children. This study was conducted to assess the oral health status in relation to nutritional status among institutionalized autistic children and adolescents. Materials and methods: From 12 institutes in Baghdad, the study group contained 364 child and adolescent with ASD (Male= 294, Female=70), while control group included 441 normal child and adolescent (Male=357, Female=84) from primary and secondary schools. The age range (6-15) years old categorized to two age groups, children age group (6-10) years and adolescents age group (11-15) years. Decayed, missing and filled surfaces (dmfs, DMFS), plaque (PlI), Gingival (GI) and calculus (CI) indices were used to measure oral health status for both groups. Assessment of nutritional status performed by using BMI for age z-score value. The data of current study was analyzed using SPSS version 21. Results: Mean rank values of (dmfs, DMFS) were lower in study group than control group with high significant differences. The mean rank values of PlI, GI, and CI in study group were found to be higher than control group with high significant differences. A moderate positive high significant correlation was found between ds, dmfs, DS, DMFS and PlI, GI, CI in both groups. The mean rank values of body mass index (BMI) for age z-score were higher in study group than control group. Very weak negative high significant correlation between BMI for age z-score and ds, dmfs, DS, DMFS in study group. Conclusion: Dental caries severity, oral hygiene and gingival health were lower in ASD group than control group. Dental caries severity was related to oral health status in both groups. Possible of overweight, overweight and obesity were most common in children and adolescents with ASD than control group. Body weight of autistic children was related to dental caries severity. Background: Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate derived from the milk protein casein. The aims of this study were to investigate the efficacy of CPP-ACP on the microhardness of the sound and artificially caries-like lesion of outer enamel surface in comparison to sodium fluoride 0.05%, stannous fluoride 0.4%, and de-ionized water. Materials and methods: Sixty five maxillary first premolars, two teeth were used for sound and caries- like lesion enamel ground section preparation, while other teeth were randomly divided into two groups, A and B. Group A was consisted of 42 teeth were randomly assigned to five study groups and one control group. After production of initial caries-like lesion of outer enamel surface, the teeth were treated by the selected agents for four minutes separately (CPP-ACP, CPP-ACP+NaF, CPP-ACP+SnF2, NaF 0.05%, and SnF2 0.4%). While Group B consisted of 21 teeth were randomly divided to three study groups, teeth treated with (CPP-ACP, CPP- ACP+NaF, CPP- ACP+SnF2) before demineralization by pH cycling procedure. Results: In both groups showed that agents of study groups were statistically highly significant in elevation of the microhardness values, CPP-ACP+NaF caused highest change in the microhardness (207.21%) for Group A and (19.22%) for Group B, while the lowest change with SnF2 0.4% (74.32%) for Group A and CPP-ACP (8.2%) for Group B. Conclusions: CPP-ACP agents were effective in remineralization of the outer enamel caries-like lesions and the higher remineralizing potential when applied with fluoridated agents; which was reflected by increase in enamel microhardness values.
