JournalResearch & Review Journal of Geriatric Nursing and Health Sciences
Date2025-02-25
Abstract

Falls represent a significant public health concern, particularly among hospitalized older adults. This vulnerability stems from a confluence of intrinsic (age-related physiological changes, pre-existing conditions, medications) and extrinsic factors (hospital environment, inadequate staffing, lack of fall prevention protocols). The consequences of falls in this population can range from minor injuries to severe trauma, including hip fractures, head injuries, and even death. These events lead to increased healthcare costs, prolonged hospital stays, reduced quality of life, and functional decline. This article review examines the current evidence on fall-related injuries in hospitalized older adults, focusing on risk factors, effective prevention strategies, and areas requiring further research.

Date2024-11-26
Abstract

Background: Triage remains a cornerstone of emergency care, both in the context of large-scale disasters and within everyday hospital emergency departments. It is a process of sorting and prioritizing patients based on their illness or injury severity. This prioritization ensures that those in most critical need receive timely medical intervention, potentially saving lives and improving their overall prognosis. Therefore, we assessed the nurses’ knowledge regarding triage to identify the level of required ongoing training and education to ensure accurate assessments and optimal patient outcomes in hospital care. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling method was conducted in three main teaching hospitals in Al-Najaf city from December 2023 till April 2024. A specially prepared questionnaire was used to collect the required data from 70 nurses working in those hospitals. Results: findings showed that (62.9%) were females. Along with this (60%) of the total do not have training courses on triage. In concern knowledge, nurses exhibited poor knowledge (47.14%) and moderate knowledge (50%) about triage. Furthermore, the overall nurses’ knowledge concerning triage was not associated with nurses' demographic data (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The study concluded that the majority of nurses had overall poor to moderate knowledge of triage, which is a poor finding, and there was a high association between nurses’ knowledge and training courses on triage.

Abstract

Background: The global rise in , and morbidity related to respiratory failure has highlighted the critical role of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO is a well-established technology that facilitates blood oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal through an external circulation system. Nurses equipped with comprehensive knowledge of ECMO can deliver optimal patient care. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate nurses' knowledge of ECMO and explore the relationship between their knowledge and socio-demographic factors. Methodology: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling across three major teaching hospitals in Al-Najaf City: Al-Hakim General Hospital, Al-Sadr Medical City, Al-Najaf Teaching Hospital, and Al-Sajjad Hospital, from November 2023 to April 2024. Data were collected from 49 nurses using a specially designed questionnaire. Utilized Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed that 55.1% of the participants were female, and 98% of all nurses had attended ECMO training courses. Overall, nurses demonstrated moderate knowledge about ECMO across most areas (67.35%). Additionally, no significant relationship was found between the nurses' overall understanding of ECMO and their socio-demographic characteristics (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The study concluded that most nurses possessed moderate knowledge of ECMO, which is a satisfactory outcome. Furthermore, no significant association was observed between nurses' knowledge and their socio-demographic characteristics.
