مختصر البحث

The khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), is an important pest of stored wheat worldwide. The current study assessed the efficacy of five Iraqi isolates of entomopathogenic fungi, including Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Cordycipitaceae) isolate Bb25, Lecanicillium attenuatum (Petch) Zare & Gams (Cordycipitaceae) isolate La90, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin (Clavicipitaceae) isolate Ma42, Isaria fumosorosea (Wize) (Clavicipitaceae) isolate P10 and Chaetomium globosum (Kunze) (Chaetomiaceae) isolate CHG20, compared to a commercially produced B. bassiana strain GHA (Mycotrol® ESO). We also assessed the effects of fungal infection on the fecundity and longevity of adult female beetles under laboratory conditions of 30 ± 2°C and 65 ± 5% RH. Beauveria bassiana isolate Bb25 and M. anisopliae isolate Ma42 had the highest virulence compared to L. attenuatum isolate La90, C. globosum isolate CHG20, I. fumosorosea isolate P10 and Mycotrol® ESO. Abbott-corrected mortality of T. granarium after exposure to either B. bassiana or M. anisopliae, at 106 conidia ml–1, varied according to the beetle's developmental stage. First, second and third instars were more susceptible compared with fourth, fifth instars and adults at 10 d post-treatment. Beauveria bassiana isolate Bb25 and M. anisopliae isolate Ma42 caused about 50% reduction in total fecundity and about 20% reduction in longevity of the female adults. The results demonstrate that the two Iraqi isolates of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae have potential as a biological control agents of T. granarium; however, further studies under commercial storage conditions are required.

مختصر البحث

A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to study the effect of Iraqi entomopathogenic fungi Verticillium lecanii, and Isaria fumosorosea entomopathogenic on the mortality level of larval and adult stages of Green peach aphids Myzus persicae. The results showed that first and second instar nymphs were more susceptible to infection with both fungal species where the mortality levels were (96.9 and 93.9%) and (90 and 89.8%) respectively, compared to adult stage which was less susceptible to infection. The evaluation of effect of aphid host plant (cucmber, green pepper, eggplant) on the efficacy of V. lecanii and I. fumosorosea against third instar nymphs of M. persicae was showed that there was a significant effect of host plant species on the corrected mortality of M. persicae caused by V. lecanii and I. fumosorosea, with the highest rate of mortality recorded against M. persicae feeding on cucumber compared to green pepper and eggplant which was 95.5 and 87.5% respectively.

مختصر البحث

Aphids are one of the major insect pests of greenhouses and field crops worldwide. Several species of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), including Lecanicillium spp. Beauveria bassiana, Isaria fumosorosea and Metarhizium anisopliae, have been developed commercially to control aphid species. However, there are no commercial products based on EPF that have been registered in Iraq. This study, therefore, was conducted to evaluate the virulence of four isolates of EPF, including, B. bassiana, Lecanicillium lecanii, M. anisopliae and Chaetomium globosum to select the highly virulent ones against the greenhouse aphids. Although the isolate of L. lecanii had the highest virulence against all tested aphid species in the laboratory bioassay, Myzus persicae Sulz and Aphis gossypii Gloy were more susceptible than Aphis fabae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae to infection with L. lecanii. Mortality caused by L. lecanii 7 days post-treatment with 108 conidia ml−1 was 100%. Further experiments in the greenhouses showed that L. lecanii significantly reduced the density of both M. persicae and A. gossypii 5 days after fungal applications. This isolate shows a promise for development of an alternative control agent against M. persicae and A. gossypii in Iraq.

مختصر البحث

A study of individual and combination between the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) and aqueous extract of three plant species including Nerium (Nerium oleander), Elias (Myrtus communis) and Sweet acacia (Vachellia farnesiana) were evaluated against adult houseflies, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) in laboratory conditions. The fungal bioassay was carried out at different conidial concentrations ranging from1×104 to 1×109 spores ml-1. Four concentrations of aqueous extract of each plant (25, 50, 75 and 100%) were used. The highest concentration of M. anisopliae (1×109 spores ml-1) caused the highest adult houseflies mortality (100%), which was significantly different from the mortalities caused by the other fungal concentrations. Aqueous extract of Nerium was significantly more effective caused the highest adult mortality (83%) at high concentration (100%) compared with Elias and Sweet acacia (54 and 33% respectively). Therefore, three concentrations of aqueous extract of Nerium (50, 75 and 100%) were used along with 1×107 spores ml-1M. anisopliaeas an integrated pest management program against M. domestica. The combination of M. anisopliae and Nerium at all three concentrations caused more houseflies mortality than individual treatments of M. anisopliaeand Nerium respectively,7 days post-application. Thus, a combined application of an entomopathogenic fungus and aqueous extract of Nerium may benefit from both, and it has proven effective for the control of houseflies.

Lecanicillium muscarium and Adalia bipunctata combination for the control of black bean aphid, Aphis fabae

الباحثونAkram A. Mohammed
المجلةBioControl
مختصر البحث

The predator Adalia bipunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and the entomopathogenic fungus Lecanicillium muscarium, have been considered as potential biological control against aphids. While it can be difficult to achieve a high control level of Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae) using only a single beneficial agent, the research presented here aimed to determine the interaction between L. muscarium and A. bipunctata potential for control against A. fabae. Lecanicillium muscarium was found to cause about 30% mortality in A. bipunctata and with a reduction in feeding by about 15%. However, coapplication of A. bipunctata and L. muscarium can cause an addititive effect in reducing aphid populations, resulting in about 90% reduction in aphid populations compared with control treatment. Thus, these two biocontrol agents have the potential to be complementary. This research study demonstrates that it is possible to combine A. bipunctata with L. muscarium to provide a sustainable method for management of A. fabae on broad bean cropping system an that field studies are required.

مختصر البحث

The green peach aphid,Myzus persicae, is a major insect pest worldwide. The parasitoid Aphidius colemaniand more recently, the entomopathogenic fungusLecanicillium muscarium strain KV01 (Mycotal®), have been considered as potential biological control againstM. persicae. However, no studies have been carried out on the interaction between L. muscariumandA. colemaniagainstM. persicae. This study, therefore, was conducted to determine the most effective timing of application of this fungal strain in combination with either naturally occurring or introduced parasitoids to controlMyzus persicaein the laboratory and controlledfield environments. In the laboratory, mummification, emergence of parasitoid adults from mummified aphids and female sex ratio of the emerging adults, were not affected when the fungus was applied 6 or 7 days after the parasitoids were added, compared with treatment withA. colemanionly. Although a 40% reduction in the female sex ratio of emerging parasitoid adults was recorded when fungi applied 3 days after the parasitoids were added, fungal application had no significant effect on longevity and fecundity of the femaleA. colemaniF1 generation that emerged from fungus-treated aphids. In the semi-field experiment, the mean number of aphids per leaf was significantly lower in the treatment involvingA. colemaniin combination with L. muscariumthan those withA. colemanialone. However, aphid reduction in the treatments involving naturally occurring parasitoids alone and those in combination withL. muscariumwas not significantly different. This study suggests that it is possible to combineL. muscariumwithA. colemanito increase the level of aphid control. A more detailed knowledge of the effects of naturally occurring parasitoids on pest control and their interaction with other biological control agents will help to develop environmentally sound crop management strategies with reduced insecticide applications.

مختصر البحث

The green peach aphid,Myzus persicae, is a major pest worldwide. An examination of the impact of temperature, relative humidity (RH) and developmental stages of M. persicae on the efficacy of the whitefly mycoinsecticide Mycotal®, based on Lecanicillium muscariumand the effects of infection on aphid fecundity was evaluated under controlled conditions. Although this fungus can be grown at a broad range of temperatures (15–30°C), the optimum temperature for control ofM. persicaeranged between 20 and 30°C.L. muscariumhad high efficacy as a microbial control agent against M. persicae between 55% and 90% RH. Total mortality of aphids treated with different spore dosages of L. muscariumvaried according to the developmental stage: adults, fourth and third instar nymphs proved more susceptible than first instar nymphs. Although the fungus did not affect the rate of nymph production, the reproductive period of aphids significantly decreased with increasing the spore dosage. Thus, total fecundity of treated aphids was 22.6 ± 1.1 and 31.6 ± 2.4 offspring per adult at the medium (644 ± viable spore/mm 2 ) and low (330 ± 40 viable spore/mm 2 ) dosages, compared with 45.7 ± 4.3 offspring per untreated aphid. The results suggest thatL. muscarium has the potential as a biological control agent ofM. persicae.

Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is one of the most common and devastating onion pests which is capable of causing substantial harm to onion crops. Synthetic pesticides are mainly used to control onion thrips. T. tabaci requires alternative, low-impact control measures since there are numerous difficulties with utilizing chemical pesticides, including pesticide resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the nanomaterial compounds on adults and nymphs of the T. tabaci in vivo and study their physiological changes caused by pesticides. The findings demonstrate that using nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and frankincense nanoparticles (FNPs), significantly impacts the number of onion thrips. It also has the potential to lower the risk of pesticide resistance. According to the preliminary results, using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) considerably increased the mortality rate of adults and nymphs of T. tabaci and decreased egg-hatching success. Carbon nanotube (CNTs) and frankincense nanoparticles showed a high death rate in adult and nymphal stages at a concentration of 0.05 percent. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) demonstrated exceptional mortality rates in adult and nymphal stages, with 90 and 50 percent at 5 mg/mL concentrations. Frankincense nanoparticles (FNPs) treatment demonstrated a high adult mortality rate of around 60 percent compared to the control treatment. Eggs of onion thrips showed different hatching success rates after treatment with CNTs and FNPs. The egg hatch rate did not exceed 40 percent of hatched eggs in the CNTs treatment compared to 90 percent in the control treatment. On the other hand, number of laid eggs per female did not differ significantly, indicating that none of the treatments affected the fecundity of the females. The ability of thrips to develop resistance to CNTs and frankincense compounds requires additional investigation. These natural products could be a suitable alternative to control destructive pests like onion thrips.

Background The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, and the bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli (both Hemiptera: Aphididae), are serious pests of greenhouse vegetable crops in Iraq and other regions of the globe. In this study, two morphological identical isolates (AA80 and AA82) of the entomopathogenic fungus Clonostachys rosea Schroers (Hypocreales: Bionectriaceae) from Iraq were isolated and characterized with phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. The efficacy of C. rosea against M. persicae and A. fabae was previously unknown. Results In the laboratory bioassays, mortality of adult M. persicae and A. fabae caused by both C. rosea isolates varied according to conidial concentrations, with complete mortality occurring at 1 × 109 conidia ml−1 10 day post treatment. For M. persicae, LC50 values of AA80 and AA80 isolates were 3.6 × 106 and 3.8 × 106 conidia ml−1. For A. fabae, LC50 values of AA80 and AA80 isolates were 4.5 × 106 and 4.35 × 106 conidia ml−1. Infection by both fungal isolates at LC50 values reduced total fecundity of the treated aphids by 20% when compared to the untreated aphids. Conclusions The results from laboratory bioassays showed that C. rosea has potential as a biological control agent of M. persicae and A. fabae which is crucial for ecofriendly biopesticide development. However, further field and greenhouse studies are required for mass production.

Background Efficacy of new isolates of the entomopathogenic fungus (EPF), Clonostachys rosea, against adult stage of the most serious coleopteran stored product insect pests in Iraq, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and Callosobruchus maculatus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), was evaluated under laboratory conditions. Two isolates of C. rosea, associated with the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulz.), were isolated and investigated. Efficacy of C. rosea isolates was evaluated by two concentrations (1 × 108 and 1 × 106 conidia ml−1). Results Corrected mortality rates caused by both C. rosea isolates, 6 days post-treatment, with 1 × 108 conidia ml−1, ranged from 70.7 to 75.7%. Fungal infection caused 37–53% reduction in total fecundity of the adult females of the three tested insect species, 6 days post-treatment. Conclusion Obtained results demonstrated that C. rosea isolates had potentials as a biological control agent against coleopteran stored product insect pests. However, further studies under commercial storage conditions are required.

The current study assessed the efficacy of entomopathogenic fungal (EPF) biopesticides against adult and larval stages of houseflies, Musca domestica L. under laboratory conditions. Six commercial EPF biopesticides were selected for virulence tests; three strains of Beauveria bassiana (HF23 in the product balEnce™, GHA in the product Botanigard ES and ATCC 74040 in the product Naturalis-L), one strain of Metarhizium brunneum (F52 in the product Met52®), one strain of Lecanicillium muscarium (KV01 in the product Mycotal®), and one strain of Isaria fumosorosea (Apopka 97, in the product Preferal WG). Adult and larval stages of houseflies were sprayed with 2 ml of a conidial concentration (108 conidia ml−1) of each EPF biopesticide individually using a Potter tower. The results showed that balEnce™ and Botanigard ES were significantly the highest efficacy against adults and larvae of M. domestica, compared to other EPF biopesticides. The mean conidial concentration (LC50) for adults and larvae of M. domestica exposed to balEnce™ was 4.7 × 105 conidia ml−1 and 4.8 × 105 conidia ml−1 respectively, which was not significantly different from LC50 value of Botanigard ES (6.0 × 105 and 4.6 × 105 conidia ml−1). The mean lethal time (LT50) values of balEnce™ and Botanigard ES were significantly shorter at 109 and 108 than other conidial concentrations. balEnce™ or Botanigard ES caused 44–94% reduction in daily fecundity of the adult females from day 3 to day 10 post-treatment. Results demonstrated that EPF biopesticides balEnce™ and Botanigard ES have potential as biocontrol agents of M. domestica but further research under operational conditions is required.
