JournalEnergies, Vol 10, No.4, p-463,
Abstract

The growth of electrical demand increases the need of renewable energy sources, such as wind energy, to meet that need. Electrical power losses are an important factor when wind farm location and size are selected. The capitalized cost of constant power losses during the life of a wind farm will continue to high levels. During the operation period, a method to determine if the losses meet the requirements of the design is significantly needed. This article presents a Simulink simulation of wind farm integration into the grid; the aim is to achieve a better understanding of wind variation impact on grid losses. The real power losses are set as a function of the annual variation, considering a Weibull distribution. An analytical method has been used to select the size and placement of a wind farm, taking into account active power loss reduction. It proposes a fast linear model estimation to find the optimal capacity of a wind farm based on DC power flow and graph theory. The results show that the analytical approach is capable of predicting the optimal size and location of wind turbines. Furthermore, it revealed that the annual variation of wind speed could have a strong effect on real power loss calculations. In addition to helping to improve utility efficiency, the proposed method can develop specific designs to speeding up integration of wind farms into grids.

AuthorsAhmed Al Ameri , Cristian Nichita
JournalAdvances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Abstract

This article presents a linear model predicting optimal size of Distributed Generation (DG) that addresses the minimum power loss. This method is based fundamentally on strong coupling between active power and voltage angle as well as between reactive power and voltage magnitudes. This paper proposes simplified method to calculate the total power losses in electrical grid for different distributed generation sizes and locations. The method has been implemented and tested on several IEEE bus test systems. The results show that the proposed method is capable of predicting approximate optimal size of DG when compared with precision calculations. The method that linearizes a complex model showed a good result, which can actually reduce processing time required. The acceptable accuracy with less time and memory required can help the grid operator to assess power system integrated within large-scale distribution generation.

Power Loss Reduction in Electrical Network using Optimized Location and Size of Multi Distributed Generators

AuthorsNichita Cristian, Al Ameri Ahmed
Journalthe 5th International Symposium on Electrical and Electronics Engineering (ISEEE)
Abstract

The location of distributed generators (DG) with different size on the power distribution systems could modify the voltage profile and impacts the level of real power losses. Faster optimization technique as well as a high computational speed of load flow are therefore required. This paper presents a linear model and an algorithm that allow to calculate the real power losses of the system. This methodology is based on the graph theory for representing the electrical network and generate the incident matrix. The Interior Point (IP) method is chosen as a local optimization method to solve problems of large-scale nonlinearity of power grid flows. The proposed approach obtains the optimal location and size of the DG units for each bus system with an important saving computational time and it has been tested with three standard IEEE bus. The results demonstrate the capability of the proposed method to reduce the active power losses with an advantageous time saving comparing to nonlinear approach based on Newton Raphson method.

Performance of Electrical Power Network with Variable Load Simulation

AuthorsAhmed Al Ameri , Cristian Nichita
JournalEUROSIM, Finland
Abstract

Electric Spring is an emerging smart grid technology, which can provide voltage support to weakly regulated system. This paper studies the effect of load variation on the performance of electric springs. Two different single phase circuits with intermittent power supply have been simulated for the study - with one electric spring and with two electric springs. The loads considered are linear and are identical. Results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink environment show that line voltage is regulated by electric spring irrespective of variation in load. A brief comparative study is done between the simulation results obtained from the two circuits to observe the effect of the additional electric spring. This study tests the effectiveness of electric springs in a circuit designed to be more realistic, i.e., when the loads are not ON all the time and multiple electric springs are distributed all over the grid.

Abstract

This paper presents a control strategy of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind turbine under electrical grid disturbance. Two mains problems are faced by DFIG; fluctuating output power and Low-Voltage Ride Trough capability (LVRT). In order to smooth the output power injected in the electrical grid and to improve dynamic behavior of DFIG under symmetrical voltage dip, a control strategy of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is presented. Simulations have been carried out, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our control.

JournalMEPS Wroclaw Poland
Abstract

In this paper, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization technique proposed to find optimal sizing and location of multi distributed generations in electrical networks. The objective function based on a linearised model to calculate the real power losses as a function of power generators. This method based fundamentally on a strong coupling between active power and power flow both as function voltage angles. The using of multi Distributed Generation (DG) units has been addressed to minimize the objective function (real power loss) taking into account DG capacity, transmission line capacity and voltage profile constraints. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is applied on (14, 30 and 57) IEEE standard systems by set maximum and minimum capacity of multi DG units based on the type of renewable energy resources. Results show that the linear model combined with GA is efficient in reducing real power losses by finding the optimal location and size of DG units.

JournalUKSIM Cambridge – UK
Abstract

This paper presents a linearised model for a Distributed Generation (DG) network with the aim of estimating optimal size of DG using Kalman filter and graph theory. Relationships between the active power and voltage angle and between the reactive power and voltage magnitude are utilised to determine the minimum real power loss and voltage profile of the distributed network. A 2-stage method is suggested to estimate the best size of DGs. In the first stage, the graph flow method is used to generate the incident matrix to build the linear model and in the second stage, a Kalman filter algorithm is applied to obtain the optimal size of the DG at each bus system. The proposed method has been implemented and tested on standard IEEE 5-bus test system. Simulation results showed that the proposed method is of a significant time saving when compared to an existing method based on load flow.

JournalInternational Conference on Renewable Energies and Power Quality (ICREPQ14)
Abstract

This paper presents Data Compression Simulated algorithm for load flow calculation in electrical power systems. Real time monitor of grids required less computation time in calculation of power system analysis. Load flow problem is heart of this analysis and it basically required calculate active and reactive power flow in lines connected between buses in networks. Many topology and structures for Transmission and Distribution Systems has been proposed to reduce CPU times and memory. The proposed algorithm used Data compression technique tested different systems and results shows it is efficiency. More accuracy for large systems will need more iterations calculation which mean increasing time consumption, while Run Length Encoding (RLE) algorithm is fitness to optimized calculation numbers to exact number cause it has no zero values included. Network structure was represented as one dimension vector instead of 2D Matrix and it is effectiveness results was valid, by avoid exponential increased, by utilized this algorithm. Matlab results obtained by applied this algorithm match theoretical results.

Abstract

The capability of the classical network to support the level penetration of Distribution Generation (DG) has been present to analysis how to achieve a better integration of flexible demand of Electrical Networks(Mesh and Radial systems). Based on this analysis, two simulation algorithms have been proposed to reduce CPU time and memory, can help the grid operator to assess power situation and increase penetration level of DG. Firstly, It deals with an algorithm developed for power load flow studies in electrical power systems using Schur complement method. By dividing Jacobian matrix into two separated matrices with reasonable computation time, It could be avoided divergence of the solution. A next step that was applied concerned Data Compression for the Simulated algorithms conceived to study load flow calculation in electrical power systems. Real time monitor of grids required less computation time in calculation of power system analysis. It proposed an algorithm based on Run Length Encoding (RLE) method where no zero values are included. Matlab results obtained by applying these algorithms match the analytical approaches. Results have been compared with Newton Raphson and Fast Decoupled methods in term of influence of convergence properties and it's efficiency. These methods have been implemented and tested on several IEEE bus test systems.

Abstract

This paper presents a study development based on a hardware in the loop simulation for wind and tidal current power systems. We used the similarities between technologies for wind turbines and for the tidal current power systems. We analyze and develop an experimental system consisting two main parts: a real time software simulator and an electromechanical system. The Electromechanical System is composed from three electrical drives: an asynchronous machine that emulates the tidal current power systems, an asynchronous generator, used to study the energy conversion and grid connection. The Software simulator is a supervising and control subsystem and is composed from a computational unit and different interface devices. The studied system is a variable speed turbine system based on Double Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The stator of the generator firstly is directly connected to the grid and secondly passes through a converter. Experimental results from the simulator are presented in order to compare different simulation procedures.

Abstract

Market and electricity companies are interested to reduce costs by increasing penetration level of DG's in utility systems with best integration and developing measurements. Mesh and Radial distribution systems have different structures which change the capability of the network to support the level penetration of Distribution Generation (DG). The capability of the classical network to support the level penetration of Distribution Generation (DG) could be changed according different structures of distribution systems (Mesh and Radial systems). An overview of impact of DG on these different structures with different voltage levels is presented with respect to different issues like power losses, voltage profile, protection, reconfiguration, load balance, reliability, planning and cost. Review of recent researches on these subjects has been present to analysis how to achieve a better integration of flexible demand with Distributed Generation. This would lead to an increase of the use of Distributed Generation and a decrease of problems caused by intermittent distributed generation in electricity systems and at the electricity market. Based on this analysis, we emphasized that distribution topologies have different impact depending on size and type of DG as well as penetration level of it
