A Comparative Analysis for Congestion Control Mechanisms in Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) has new revolution movement in the communication systems. Concepts of anywhere and anytime make pressure to design new wave of developments in many directions. One of these directions is how reliable billions of heterogeneous objects interconnect via Internet. Constrain Access Protocol (CoAP) is used to full this gap with its lightweight (RESTful) datagram. Congestion control considered as crucial impact of any network performance design specially in the Internet and it represents highly interest issue in the design of any protocol serve IoT environments. The demand of CoAP protocol which gives us some congestion control was regarded a good solution, however, application feedback algorithms that have been employed in the Constrained Control Advance CoCoA protocol are taken as an alternative enhancement for CoAP protocol , supplying more elastic way for congestion control on IoT network . Different scenarios with different numbers of nodes in comparative analysis have been proposed in this thesis. Each node was loaded Contiki operating system and whole network simulated in Cooja simulator. The comparative study focused on the round-trip delay (RTD), average dropped packet, goodput, throughput and other analyses like a total successful connection in IoT networks. These calculations have developed by using MATLAB 2016 and Wireshark which was used to capture packets (pcap files) outlet from Cooja simulator for each simulated network in both comparted protocols. The study found that average delay in CoCoA has a higher time delay than CoAP (776%) in moderate nodes number scenario and CoCoA better with (11%) in eHealth scenario, while succeed connections in CoCoA are better than CoAP specially in high density nodes network. Also, it was found that throughput was more in CoAP especially in low number nodes network. However, this result was built in how much packet being sent and received and the same time , It doesn’t care about the dropped and how much successful connection ,which in turn were discussed in goodput criteria that explained that CoCoA has better than CoAP with (14.36%) . The dropped packet was discussed and found that CoCoA was improved in highly density nodes network . Adding more algorithms to the protocol suite increase the foot print of memory used in any node and make more pressure in MCU that adds more time for execution , however with Moore law , this will not be a problem in IoT and tend to move forward to develop more complicated mechanism to enhance these protocols and their structure.
