Background: The release of metallic ions, such as nickel and chromium, from fixed orthodontic appliances may lead to adverse effects, including hypersensitivity in patients. The use of whitening mouthwashes to address discoloration associated with orthodontic treatment can potentially increase the corrosion of metallic components, thereby enhancing ion release. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the release of nickel and chromium ions from two types of orthodontic archwires when exposed to commonly used whitening mouthwashes. Materials and Methods: A total of 200 stainless steel archwires, 200 nickel-titanium archwires, 400 half-set orthodontic brackets, and 800 molar tubes were utilized. The experimental setup included exposure to four whitening mouthwashes: Lacalut, Colgate Optic White, Capitano Activated Vegetable Charcoal, and Signal Expert Protection. Nickel and chromium ion release was measured over varying time periods. Results: The metallic components of fixed orthodontic appliances demonstrated a progressive increase in nickel and chromium ion release across all whitening mouthwash types over time. Significant differences were observed in ion release rates among the mouthwashes, except on the first day, where most brands exhibited non-significant differences. Notably, nickel-titanium archwires released significantly higher ion levels compared to stainless steel archwires. Conclusion: Whitening mouthwashes contribute to increased nickel and chromium ion release from fixed orthodontic devices over time. Nickel-titanium archwires are more susceptible to ion release than stainless steel, underscoring the need for careful consideration of mouthwash type during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract Background Bonding of orthodontic brackets of fixed orthodontic appliance by using acid etch technique was first introduced in 1955. LED-based light sources posses many benefits as minimal heat generation. There is a new generation of LED light cure corporate with three different intensities (standard, high power and extra power). Objective This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of increasing intensity and decreasing duration of LED light on shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index of metal orthodontic brackets. Materials and Method Sixty healthy extracted maxillary premolars were divided into three groups of twenty teeth for each, group (I) cure with a standard LED light curing (1000mW/cm2) for 10 seconds, group (II) cured through a high-intensity LED curing light (1400mW/cm2) for 8 seconds, group (III) cured with a extra high-intensity LED curing light (3200mW/cm2) for 6 seconds. The teeth mounted in acrylic resin, Shear bond strength test was done. Then, adhesive remnant index (ARI) was evaluated. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance ANOVA test and LSD, and Fisher exact test. Results The results showed that there were statistically significant differences among the study groups. The maximum value of shear bond strength was for group III (17.834 ± 0.367) and the minimum shear bond strength value was for group I (8.888 ± 0.307). ARI scores showed a statistically significant differences among groups, with a high tendency toward score 1 and score 0 in all three groups. Conclusion High intensity LED light with low curing duration has advantage of increasing bond strength in addition to reducing chair time taken for curing procedure and enamel cleaning following de-bonding procedure without any effect on the enamel integrity.

ABSTRACT Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the hard palate bone density and thickness during 3rd and 4th decades and their relationships with body mass index (BMI) and compositions, to allow more accurate mini-implant placement. Materials and method: Computed tomographic (CT) images were obtained for 60 patients (30 males and 30 females) with age range 20-39 years. The hard palate bone density and thickness were measured at 20 sites at the intersection of five anterioposterior and four mediolateral reference lines with 6 and 3 mm intervals from incisive foramen and mid-palatal suture respectively. Diagnostic scale operates according to the bioelectric impedance analysis principle was used to measure body weight; percentages of body fat, water, and muscle; bone mass; and basal and active metabolic rates. Results: No significant difference in overall bone density and thickness of hard palate during 3rd and 4th decades. The gender should be considered in regard to bone thickness. Cortical bone density and thickness showed a tendency to decrease posteriorly, while the cancellous bone density showed a tendency to increase posteriorly. In the mediolateral areas, no specific patterns were observed. With increasing BMI, the cortical bone density was increased. The relationships of bone density and thickness with most scale measurements were not significant. Conclusion: Mini-implants for orthodontic anchorage can be effectively placed in most areas of hard palate regarding the bone density. While regarding bone thickness, care should be taken during the planning of their placement in hard palate. A new classification for bone thickness of hard palate has been developed. Keywords: Bone density, bone thickness, computerized tomography, hard palate, orthodontic mini implant.

Statement of the Problem. Te use of orthodontic fxed appliances may adversely afect oral health leading to demineralizing lesions and the development of gingival problems. Aims of the Study. Te study aimed to coat orthodontic archwires with chlorhexidine hexametaphosphate nanoparticles (CHX-HMP NPs) and to evaluate the elusion of CHX from CHX-HMP NPs. Materials and Methods. A solution of CHX-HMP nanoparticles with an overall concentration of 5mM for both CHX and HMP was prepared, characterized (using atomic force microscope and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy), and used to coat orthodontic stainless steel (SSW) and NiTi archwires (NiTiW). Te coated segments were characterized (using scanning electron microscopy SEM with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and feld emission SEM) and subjected to the elusion assessment. Results. After having their composition validated, the average size of the CHX-HMP NPs was assessed to be 51.21nm, and the analysis revealed that the particles had both chlorine and phosphorus. After 30minutes in the coating solution, NPs deposited on the surface of the SSW and NiTiW. A continuous release of soluble CHX in artifcial saliva was detected from both SSW and NiTiW as long as the experiment lasted for 28days without reaching a plateau. However, the release from coated NiTiW was signifcantly more than coated SSW at 7, 14, and 28days. While at day 21, the release from coated SSW was slightly greater than that from the coated NiTiW. Conclusion. Orthodontic stainless steel and NiTi archwires can be successfully coated with CHX-HMP NPs and give sustained release of CHX along the examined period.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak on emergencies and pain among orthodontic patients attending a teaching hospital. The study was conducted among orthodontic patients receiving active ortho dontic treatment or in a retention period at the College of Dentistry, University of Baghdad, Iraq. Their participa tion was voluntary, and they filled out an Arabic-translated questionnaire. The survey included general information, orthodontic problems, and a numerical rating scale for pain assessment. We used descriptive and inferential statis tics (frequencies and intersecting frequencies), chi-square test and linear regression. Out of 75 orthodontic patients, only 54 (15 males and 39 females) were included in the study. The most encountered orthodontic problem was broken or movable bracket (55.6%), followed by long pocking wire 35.2%. In addition, 55.6% of the participants preferred to wait for the next appointment to see their orthodontist, and only 5.6% tried to treat the problem personally. There was no significant relationship between pain level, gender and age, whereas a strong significant association was found between pain intensity and orthodontic problems or emergencies. COVID-19 had a negative impact on orthodontic follow-up visits. The intensity of pain was strongly correlated with orthodontic problems or emergencies. Therefore, more attention should be given to patients, focusing on teaching them how to manage orthodontic emergencies during situations such as an outbreak.
