A simple and facial flow injection method coupled with spectrophotometer detection was
developed for determination of copper(II) using flow injection analysis (FIA) and sequential analysis
(SIA). The FIA and SIA systems based on the reaction of copper (II) with EDTA at pH 4-5 with an
absorption maximum at 732 nm. This study was performed with different physical and chemical
parameters such as flow rate, reaction coil, volume of reagent (EDTA), volume of sample, pH medium and
concentration of EDTA. The calibration curve was prepared and the dispersion coefficient, reproducibility
and application were studied. Two methods, flow injection and sequential injection analysis were
compared for determination of copper (II) by EDTA. The linear range was (0.6-12 mg/L), (1-16 mg/L) at
sampling rate of 137, 114 sample per hour, the detection limits (0.218 mg/L), (0.136 mg/L) for FIA and
SIA, respectively. Relative standard deviations for (10 mg/L), n = 10 were found (0.577% for FIA and
0.45% for SIA). Dispersion coefficient was also measured for the two methods.
