Siglecexpressionhasbeenobservedonspermfromseveralspeciesincludinghumans,cowsandsheep(Alkhodairetal.,2018).ThemajorfocusofSiglecresearchhasbeenontheimmunesystem(Crocker&Varki2001a,Crocker&Varki2001b,Crockeretal.2007)withmuchoftheworkconductedonhumansandmice.AnadvantageofusingmiceintheanalysisofSiglecfunctionistheeasebywhichexperimentscanbeconductedaswellastheabilitytogeneratespecificgeneticknockoutanimalmodelsifrequired(Lietal.2013,Thomasetal.2017).Inmice,Siglecshavehistoricallybeennameddifferentlytootherspecieseveniftheyhaveinfactorthologues.FiveSiglecs,Sialoadhesin(Siglec1),CD22(Siglec2),CD33(Siglec3),MAG(Siglec4)andSiglec15arehighlyconservedwithhumanforms.SiglecE,FandG,whilenottruehumanorthologues,areprobableparalogsofSiglec9,8and10respectively.Finally,SiglecHisuniquetothemouse.AsimilarrangeofSiglecshasbeenidentifiedintheratandincludesSiglec1,2,4,E,F,H,G(Varki&Angata2005).Overall,thesemousemodelsneedtobeexploredingreaterdetailandmayproveusefulinthestudyoftheroleofSiglecsintheMRTandFRT
