Negotiation is a vehicle of communication. It is a form of interaction among social interactants that is structured by certain aspects, norms, and tactics, and that is productive of social resources. This paper is an attempt to tackle the pragmatic nature of the term negotiation, and offers a theoretical background about the significant pragmatic issues and tenets of negotiation. In this regard, it aims to define these issues and other relevant concepts providing a pragma-linguistic background in order to give a better understanding of negotiation as an interactional communicative process. Thus, the study hypothesizes that speech act, presupposition, deixis, conversational implicatures, relevance, strategic maneuvering and politeness that are utilized by both sides of negotiation to actualize the two types of negotiation. These pragmatic issues most relevant to negotiation are therefore discussed in order to configure the pragmatic nature of negotiation process as a whole. |
