Symbolism is a broad topic that has been mainly tackled and studied from a literary perspective. Yet, the linguistic elements of symbolism remain largely unexamined. To bridge this gap, this study concerns itself with the task of establishing a pure pragma-stylistic approach to symbolism. This involves finding out the pragmatic-stylistic structure of symbolism as well as the pragma-stylistic strategies designated by the novelist for the characters in the novels to initiate symbolic modes of interaction. Besides it attempts at identifying the major pragma-stylistic strategies employed in triggering and maintaining symbolic modes of interaction. In association with these aims, the work hypothesizes that conversational implicatures, deixis, speech acts, parallelism, synonyms and structural cohesive devices are the major pragma-stylistic components that constitute symbolism pragma-stylistic structure.
